Our Y makes fitness accessible to the whole community by providing over 175 classes per week, most of which are included free with membership. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. For this reason, we help young people cultivate the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. Our Y programs focusing on youth development: installed democracy in over 180 high school students through Youth & Government, expanded opportunities for children under the age of 5 with new youth sports programs, encouraged children to learn, grow and thrive through afterschool art classes, among several other activities which offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical, and emotional growth. Our Y currently serves approximately 4,542 youth. In addition, we provided over 2,000 kids the opportunity to take on new responsibilities, gain independence and develop essential social skills through summer camp. We have been listening and responding to our community's most critical social needs since 1951. Y programs such as computer training for seniors, counseling services for transitional living, family resource classes and seminars, financial assistance support, and volunteering training and placement, are examples of how we deliver training, resources and support that empower our neighbors to effect change, bridge gaps, and overcome obstacles. In 2011, we engaged over 25,000 Y members, participants, and volunteers in activities that strengthen our community and pave the way for future generations to thrive. In addition, the YMCA of the Foothills joined a select group of Y's across the nation to be deemed a Global Center of Excellence for our work in expanding opportunities to build a global community through operation and program strategies and practices. The YMCA of the Foothills serves approximately 8,770 membership units consisting of 21,064 individual members. No one is turned away from membership due to financial inability to pay as the Y champions inclusion and responds to the needs and interests of the communities we serve. We strive to have staff program and policy volunteers and people of all ages involved in the Y to reflect the demographic profile of our community. Accordingly, direct financial assistance in 2011 amounting to $303,055 was granted to individuals and families for participation in Y membership and activities. We know that lasting personal and social change comes about when we all work together. With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y sponsored the following community programs in 2011, the Annual Community Support Campaign, Good Friday Service, Y-Tribes Community Pancake Breakfast, the Fiesta Days 5 & 10 K Run and Hike, Summer Day and Overnight Camps, the Christmas Tree Lot (which supports teen leadership programs), the Prayer Breakfast and the Verdugo Hills Community Winter Carnival.
