It is a public-private partnership where the existing investor-owned utility maintains transmission lines, and Sonoma Clean Power sets electricity rates and develops local renewable energy at scale. This approach will provide tremendous advantages such as rate stability, stimulation of the local economy, green job creation, and energy policy that can cause an explosion of renewable energy development. In the last year the Campaign has built support and gotten endorsements with civic leaders and in the business community. We participated with the Sonoma County Water Agency in a feasibility study that was favorable to this initiative and unanimously accepted by the Board of Supervisors. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Cool Schools: Since 2003 the Climate Protection Campaign has supported student leaders in taking action to protect the climate. Our Cool Schools has proven results in seven high schools in significantly reducing emissions associated with the student commute. We will now take this service-learning program that engages youth in taking leadership and expand it through Sonoma County and into other parts of the Bay Area. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Conserve and Capture - Solid Waste & Agriculture: Last year we helped stop the sale of the County's landfill. Based on our analysis, selling would have impeded climate protection efforts. In the aftermath of this decision, we are leading an initiative with local officials, businesses and key stakeholders to develop a sustainable system for managing Sonoma County's solid waste. This initiative will be an inspiring model to show how the community comes together to solve complex problems. We are also working with stakeholders in the agriculture and open space communities to review emissions reduction strategies and to select one project to seek significant funding for before the end of the year.
