excellence campaign for the following purpose: Interest income from a proper endowment would provide a portion of the operating budget each year and, most importantly, the endowment will serve as a safety net in uncertain times. Goodman Theatre is one of Chicago's principal cultural institutions, a leader in the American Theater and internationally recognized for its artists, productions and outreach programs. Industry standards indicate that an institutionalized cultural non-profit should have two to three times its operating budget in endowed funds. The Goodman has only been an independent non-profit since 1978 and the establishment of our new facility in 2000 was a major financial and organization effort. Because of these factors, Goodman has not focused on building endowment and our reserves do not match those of our sister cultural organizations. Schedule D, Part X, Line 2: In accordance with the accounting standard on Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes, CTG addresses the determination of whether tax benefits claimed on a tax return should be recorded in the financial statements. Under the guidance, CTG may recognize a tax benefit from an uncertain tax position only if it is more than likely than not that the tax position will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merit of the position. Examples of tax positions include the tax-exempt status of CTG and various positions related to the potential sources of unrelated business taxable income. There were no significant unrecognized tax benefits identified or recorded as liabilities during fiscal year 2011. Open tax years subject to examination by the U.S. and state taxing authorities are from the years 2008 to 2010, which statutes expire in 2011 to 2013, respectively.
