Provide shelter to abused and in-crises horses and donkeys. This program includes the ranch mortgage ($48,000/year), and all costs associated with rescue and basic care. In late November 2010, Montana Horse Sanctuary received word that Montana Large Animal Sanctuary of Hot Springs was in serious debt and couldnt feed its 1,200 animals. It was soon determined that a majority of the animals were malnourished and in seriously poor health. Many had hooves that had gone untrimmed for years and were long enough to make those donkeys and horses lame. Strangely, a few of the animals cattle, pigs and mini-donkeys were crippled by obesity. We took charge of rescuing and rehoming the 108 horses and donkeys with assistance from several other rescue organizations. We evacuated the donkeys and horses to two large boarding facilities in the Bitterroot Valley. Rehabilitation included in-depth veterinary evaluations of each animal, trimming excessively long hooves, treating hoof abscesses and laminitis caused by severely overgrown hooves, high-quality nutrition, deworming, delousing and professional training. The public enthusiastically volunteered and adopted. The entire process took nearly six months and resulted in 99 animals finding new, loving homes. Very sadly, eight of the horses and one donkey had to be euthanized due to long-standing malnutrition and health issues. The entire rescue effort cost the Sanctuary $34,751. Donations and grants specifically for this effort came to $30,146. We used $4,605 from our general operating expenses and hay grant funds. In October 2011 the Sanctuary provided support to the Cascade County Sheriff's office when they confiscated 8 horses in a cruelty case. Six of the horses stayed at the Sanctuary and received extensive rehabilitation and re-feeding.

Education and community outreach. This program includes workshops for the public, educational opportunities and assisting the horse-owning community. The Sanctuary's hay grant fund helps horses in a variety of circumstances: those whose owners are in financial straits, as well as horses confiscated in cruelty cases and special situations like the Hot Springs herd. The program began in 2007. Since then, the program has fed more than 200 horses. Of the horses whose owners were in financial difficulty, our records show the majority of those horses have remained with their owners, people who simply needed assistance at a difficult time. Other assistance to the horse community includes assistance to help horse owners rehome their horses to qualified homes. The Sanctuary strives to continually grow its network of adopters. The euthanasia grant fund helped horse owners who couldn't afford to euthanize horses in end-of-life crises. The Sanctuary pays for the veterinary and disposal costs for these financially strapped horse owners. The Sanctuary also provided support to law enforcement involved in cruelty cases. In 2011, the Sanctuary provided that support to the Jefferson County Sheriff's office, Sander's County Sheriff's Office, and the Cascade County Sheriff's office. Additionally, the Sanctuary provided funds to the Sander's County Sheriff's Office to send an investigator to a 40-hour Animal Cruelty Investigation School in fall 2011 in Billings.

Rehabilitation and placement: This program includes the work and costs of returning abused horses and donkeys to full health, and preparing them for a future in a qualified forever home. The Sanctuary rehabilitated 100 of the Hot Springs Rescue horses and donkeys, 7 horses from a Cascade County cruelty case, one donkey and one horse from Jefferson County, a horse from Ravalli County. Additionally, the Sanctuary continued rehabilitation of its other equine residents through veterinary care, farrier care, dentistry, parasite control and training. Rehabilitation is a daily activity at the Sanctuary.
