Jeanes Hospital believes that the Medicare shortfall of $4,144,176 should be treated as a communuity benefit since it has a clear mission to serving and improving the health status of the elderly. Today, approximately 70% of all patients treated at Jeanes Hospital are over the age of 65 and if Jeanes should cease to exist, this shortfall would have to be absorbed by another hospital provider in the Jeanes community. In addition, Jeanes Hospital is designated as a Medicare Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH). DSH hospitals are "safety net" hospitals because they serve predominantly low-income communities and have a substantial number of Medicare patients that also qualify for Medicaid coverge.
