We provide continuing agency support, training and emergency access to an agency social worker 24 hours a day. Our goal is to help children move toward permanency. In fact, many of our families adopt the children they foster. We assist families in adopting from foster care in Virginia and the U.S. and through a state grant, accelerate adoptions by providing video, flyers and other materials to bring eligible foster children to the attention of families wishing to adopt. 2005097 Community-based services: LFSVA is committed to helping families deal constructively with problems and crises so that they can remain together as healthy families. Home-based services are provided in the child's home and community, such as family and individual counseling, parent and child groups, therapeutic mentoring, therapeutic supervised visitation, and transitional services. Transitional services are offered for children who have returned or are returning home from out-of-home care. Children thrive when they have stable home and community relationships. The compensation and performance evaluation for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is administered by the Board Executive Committee. We offer adoption services to individuals and couples interested in special needs adoption, foster-to-adopt and home studies for domestic infants. We provide in-depth training on parenting and support throughout the adoption process. We also offer families the option to be certified as both foster and adoptive parents and assist families in adopting from foster care in Virginia and in the U.S. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Therapeutic Day Treatment: This program offers individualized therapeutic mental health support for the student and family within Minnick Education Centers and also in public school settings. We help students with such important life challenges as anger management, substance abuse, self esteem and grief through behavioral interventions, individual and group counseling, and crisis intervention. TDT employs a team approach that includes the day treatment specialist and counselor working with teachers and other school staff members. We offer information and referral and phone consultation to all Virginias. In the Richmond area we offer geriatric care assessments, consultation and mental health services. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 11: Day school autism program: The highly regarded MEC autism program offers individualized instruction geared to the unique needs of the student and his family. Our classrooms are based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, successful, research-based strategies that systematically teaches behavior in a highly structured environment. With the goal that students will transfer their new behavioral and life skills from the classroom to home and from home to the community, we give children many opportunities to learn and practice. We also support parents through mini-workshops, evaluate parent-child interaction, and invite family members to observe our staff interacting with their student to understand and apply our techniques. To ensure that we are adhering to best practices, our staff is offered a rich array of ongoing training. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 12: Therapeutic support services: LFSVA helps young people at risk of being removed from their homes, who have been removed, or who are in foster care, acquire life and coping skills. TSS helps children and youth understand and communicate their feelings, relate appropriately to their peers, and develop healthy relationships with other adults so that they can become more connected and responsible members of their families, schools and communities. LFSVA also offers a volunteer mentoring program created with funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. MentorMatch, a national mentoring model, trains and connects volunteer mentors with young people who are involved in the foster care or juvenile justice systems. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 13: Grief services: LFSVA provides a supportive and safe environment for grieving individuals to share and validate their feelings of grief and loss; community education on grief and loss issues; and support during times of crisis or disaster response. We offer support groups, workshops and seminars on loss; community support meetings; support to schools following loss or traumatic events; and debriefings about critical incidents, crises and natural or human-made disaster.
