Accomplishments: 4,248 low-income tax filers had their taxes prepared for free, 24% of whom qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit worth a total of $1.6 million; 1,364 individuals received financial education and counseling; 133 housing foreclosures were prevented and 19 households purchased homes; 71 previously unbanked individuals opened savings accounts and 34 received business or consumer loans. United Way coordinated a "Days of Caring" Program, wherein fourteen local employers loaned 167 employees to work on projects supporting the human care programs of area non-profit organizations. 42174 0 0 Labor Services: Spokane County United Way Labor services works with the labor community to educate interested members about available health and human care services, recruit volunteers for food drives, recruit and place members of organized labor with volunteer opportunities of human and health care organizations, and solicit support of the United Way fundraising campaign. 400153 349346 0 Early Learning: Experiences in the first five years of life help determine whether a child will be successful in school and life. That's why United Way is focusing on helping parents and child care providers get children off to a good start. We participate in the Inland Northwest Alliance for Early Learning, through which representatives of public health, early learning, public library, K-12, local government and local philanthropies are working together to create a sustainable early learning system that prepare all children for success. United Way invests in programs that train parents and child care providers how to support healthy child development, that improve child care quality, and that support kindergarten readiness. Over 100 families received supports to improve their parenting skills, 154 child care teachers received training focused on supporting social-emotional development of young children, 25 child care teachers earned a Child Development Associate credential following a year of intensive training, one child care center achieved accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and preschool children enrolled in four child care centers benefited from their teachers' use of a research-based assessment tool and curriculum to promote their social and emotional development.
