Reimbursement is considered a "grant" to the individual members as a means of fostering membership involvement. Pt VI, Line 6 The Secular Student Alliance is a democratic membership organization. Any student or non-student is welcome and encouraged to join. Pt VI, Line 7a Members of the governing body are elected to two year terms at annual elections (half of the seats are up for election in any given year). Candidates are nominated from the membership by the current board or by a petition of 5% of the membership. The candidates with the most votes, and who receive at least half of the total votes, are elected to the open board positions. Pt VI, Line 11b The organization's Form 990 is prepared by an independent accounting firm and then reviewed by the organization's Executive Director. After the Executive Director's review the organization provides a copy of the Form 990 to the organization's Board of Directors for approval before submission. The review is based on comparative Executive Director compensation from similar organizations. The Executive Director consults external sources for comparative data on other positions.
