The Opportunity Gallery explores the turbulent period between 1820 and 1860 when thousands of migrants moved to the West in search of a better life. The Community Gallery interprets the West through the lens of the racial ethnic and religious communities important to Western development between 1885 and 1895. The Cowboy Gallery details the evolution of the cowboy from the open-range era on the Texas grassland through the modern ranching period of the late Twentieth Century. This program provides free bus transportation and family memberships to underserved students in the Los Angeles area. The education department offers 20 different museum teacher programs exploring different aspects of life in the West through the Autry's art and artifacts, and meeting California state content standards in history/social science for kindergarten through 12th grade. United States. The collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the Autry's inception, are not recognized as assets on the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded in the year in which the items were acquired as decreases in unrestricted or temporarily restricted net assets, depending on the source of the assets used to purchase the items and whether those assets were restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. The Autry's collections policy requires that proceeds deaccessions or insurance recoveries are to be used for acquisitions to the collection. Part III, Line 4: The Autry collection is comprised of nearly 21,000 paintings, sculptures, costumes, textiles, firearms, tools, toys, games, musical instruments, and other historical objects. The Autry presents thought-provoking exhibitions and an ongoing and dynamic mix of programs and events that can be enjoyed throughout the year. Description of Intended Use of Endowment Funds: Part V, Line 4: The Autry's endowment fund comprises of board-designated endowments, or quasi-endowments and permanent (true) endowments. The board designated endowments were established by the Organization itself from unrestricted donor funds. The Organization's management imposed temporary restrictions on the use of these funds. Permanent endowments were established by donor-restricted gifts and are maintained to provide a permanent source of income, with the stipulation that principal must be invested and kept intact in perpetuity, while only the income generated can be used by the Organization. Total return of the fund is targeted to meet or exceed the expected long-term needs of The Autry in order to provide a reliable stream of income for operations and avoid adverse economic impact to the organization. Description of Uncertain Tax Positions Under FIN 48: Part X, Line 2: In accordance with FASB ASC No. 740, Income Taxes, the Autry recognizes the impact of tax positions in the financial statements if that position is more likely than not to be sustained on audit, based on the technical merits of the position. The Autry has analyzed its uncertain material tax positions for its U.S. federal and California state tax jurisdictions for the open tax years of 2009 through 2012 and the open tax years of 2008 through 2012, respectively. The Autry is of the opinion that material positions taken would, more likely than not, be sustained by examination. As of December 31, 2012 and 2011, the Autry has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements or which may have an effect on its tax exempt status.
