Lawmakers were urged to protect what works, and Apple Health for Kids, the state's popular, successful, comprehensive health coverage for children, was protected from any cuts. Lawmakers were persuaded to step up efforts to enroll 100,000 uninsured children in health coverage. 304550 Early learning is an essential component in ensuring that children are ready to learn and succeed when they reach kindergarten and elementary school. In 2012, Children's Alliance urged lawmakers to reject unfair cuts; we led a powerful coalition in proposing a comprehensive approach to close the opportunity gap through quality early learning so that all Washington's children start school ready for success. Childcare for working parents was restored to 2010 levels. Working Connections Child Care will reach an estimated 2,500 additional families who struggle to pay for child care. 306091 The Children's Alliance continued its efforts to End Childhood Hunger in Washington State. In 2012, Children's Alliance partnered with families who were threatened with the loss of their food stamp benefits, helping parents and grandparents write letters, visit legislators and speak at hearings to defend their children from the harm of hunger. Food assistance for thousands of children in immigrant families was maintained.
