In January, for example, SFP organized the Martin Luther King Day of Service programs in 17 states, from Connecticut to California, and Florida to Washington D.C., involving 21,090 volunteers in 354 service projects. This was SFP's seventh year as a lead agency with the Corporation for National and Community Service for the Martin Luther King Day of Service. As a lead agency, SFP provides grants and support to communities throughout the nation. These programs, involving international volunteers, last from 10-14 days, and are designed to improve the quality of life in impoverished communities while also providing opportunities for personal development and learning among the volunteers. For example, La Repressa, a rural community in the Dominican Republic, hosted a GPM program in July 2012 with 13 volunteers participating. This program was held in conjunction with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), United States,as part of its Alternative Breaks program. So we have corrected our prior year prepaid expense and unrestricted net assets. Correcting this prior year error decreases our current year program expenses and total expenses by $12,000. We had mistakenly misclassified our grants to foreign non-profit organizations on the Statement of Functional Expenses, showing what types of expenses these funds were used for by these organizations, instead of simply showing them as grants. Correcting this error increases the amount we report as grants given to foreign non-profit organizations by $206,014 and decreases the other program expenses we report by $206,014.
