Musical Performances - See Schedule OIn 2012, Caramoor presented a total of 43 musical performances throughout the year to 22,826 audience members in venues throughout our campus, including the 1,700-seat Venetian Theater, the 500-seat Spanish Courtyard, the 200-seat Music Room of the historic Rosen House, the Sunken Garden, Tapestry Hedge, Picnic Lawn, and Friends' Field. While maintaining our commitment to the core classical repertoire, including symphonic, opera and chamber music, we also presented a wide array of other genres, including jazz, Latin American music, and American roots music, as well as programs designed for families with young children. The 67th annual International Music Festival, which ran from June 23 to August 8 and included 25 concerts, was the highlight of our musical offerings. It opened with a performance of Menhelssohn's incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream, by the Orchestra of St. Luke's, in residence at Caramoor since 1979, conducted by Roberto Abbado. Broadway's Bebe Neuwirth contexualized the piece with excerpts from Shakespeare's play, and members of the Bel Canto at Caramoor Young Artist and Apprentice provided support as the choir. Violinist Gil Shaham made a special appearance at the beginning of the program in Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64.Classical music remained at the heart of Caramoor's festival offerings, including chamber performances by Brooklyn Rider, Brentano String Quartet, Pacifica Quartet with clarinetist Anthony McGill, Trio Cavatina, the Caramoor Virtuosi ensemble, guitarist Jason Vieaux, and the Linden String Quartet, the 2011-12 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence. New for 2012 was the first of a two-part presentation of Beethoven's Sonatas for Piano and Violin, with each sonata performed by a different duo. In addition, Caramoor's resident Orchestra of St. Luke's performed a sold-out concert featuring guest pianist, Emanuel Ax.The Bel Canto at Caramoor program mounted two complete operas under the direction of Maestro Will Crutchfield. The first, Rossini's Ciro in Babilonia, was performed on July 7 in collaboration with the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Italy. This rarely-staged production featured contralto Ewa Podles in the role of Ciro with stage direction and video projection design by Davide Livermore. Tenor Michael Spyres returned to Caramoor as Baldassare after his much lauded 2011 Caramoor debut in Guillaume Tell. Joining the cast were soprano Jessica Pratt and baritone Scott Bearden. The production was then performed in Pesaro, Italy on August 13, 2012 as part of the Rossini Opera Festival. The second opera, Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi, was performed on July 21 with an all-star cast: Soprano Eglise Gutierrez as Guiletta, mezzo-soprano Kate Aldrich as Romeo and tenor Leonardo Capalbo as Tebaldo in a classic retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story. Both productions featured the Bel Canto at Caramoor Young Artists and Apprentices and the Orchestra of St. Lukes. Pre-Opera lectures and concerts by the Bel Canto at Caramoor Young Artists and Apprentices preceded both events. On June 30, we presented Caramoor's second annual American Roots Music Festival; a day-long celebration of American music organized by producer and curator Maggi Landau, which included gospel, blues, country, folk, and bluegrass. Hot Tuna Acoustic, with the legendary Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Barry Mitterhoff, headlined this sold-out event with special guest David Bromberg. Other artists included Eileen Jewell and her band, Red Molly, Roosevelt Dime, Old Man Luedecke, and Spuyten Duyvil. Folk-rock guitarist and singer/songwriter, Richard Thompson made his sold-out Caramoor debut in the Spanish Courtyard on July 14 as part of our efforts to expand roots music programming beyond the one-day American Roots Music Festival. The theme returned again for our August 5 festival finale, Gospel According to Caramoor, with the Harlem Gospel Choir and The Lee Boys.Caramoor's Dancing at Dusk series is part of our increased efforts in programming for children and their families. This series of informal, outdoor concerts includes dance instruction, arts and crafts, giveaways and live music from around the globe. Over 2,000 audience members came out to listen and dance to world-class Gamelan, Flamenco, Bhangra and Brazilian music. On July 4 we presented a sold-out Independence Day celebration with an all-Gershwin symphonic pops concert and fireworks display. We also presented A Day in the Renaissance, a family experience on July 22 based on the successful Renaissance-themed Education Program held on Caramoor's grounds for local school groups throughout the year. The end of the festival was rounded out by some of the top names in American jazz. The Cookers, Gretchen Parlato, Kenny Barron, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Roy Haynes made up the roster for our July 28 full-day Jazz Festival. 19-time Grammy Award Winning guitarist, Pat Metheny, performed to a sold-out audience the next day along with bassist Ben Williams, saxophonist Chris Potter, and long-time collaborator and drummer Antonio Sanchez. Genre-defying banjoist, Bela Fleck, returned to Caramoor on August 4, this time in collaboration with the Marcus Roberts Trio.Caramoor also presented 18 chamber music perfomances in the spring and fall in the Music Room of the historic Rosen House, including 11 one-hour Holiday musicales that could be paired with an afternoon tea service and a tour of the historic home. The spring season included perfomances by the Vocal Rising Stars and the Linden String Quartet, the 2011-12 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence. The fall season included the Evnin Rising Stars, the Amphion String Quartet, 2012-13 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, and a sold-out concert by the Aulos Ensemble with soprano, Julianne Baird.

Rosen House, Gardens and Estate - See Schedule ORosen House: The Rosen House is a Mediterranean Revival villa at the center of the Caramoor campus. In recognition of the unsurpassed quality and great quantity of European period rooms incorporated into the fabric of the house, Caramoor was recognized as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, a distinction that it shares with sites such as Vizcaya in Miami, FL and Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA. Built in the 1930s, it is an incomparable concert venue, a unique classroom for visiting schoolchildren, and a haven for the creative growth of young musicians. In 2012, Caramoor staff and volunteers continued to research a wealth of archival material in the house in order to develop new public programs and better understand Caramoor's founders, Lucie and Walter Rosen, their contributions to the arts, and the history of Caramoor as a performing arts center. We are looking forward to completing this process in the near future.During this research and re-evaluation period, which began in 2010, the Rosen House remained open and available to the public in 2012 through concerts in the Music Room and Spanish Courtyard, arts-in-education programs, and young artist training programs. Tours of the House and collection, which had been suspended, were reinstated on a limited basis during the 2012 Holiday season, anticipating further availability during 2013.Gardens and Estate: The 90-acre Caramoor campus, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places at the state-wide level of significance in 2001 and at the national level of significance in 2011, is comprised of four primary buildings-today known as the Rosen House, the Administration Building, the Gifford Residence, and the Diane Moss Education Center-as well as ancillary buildings and landscape features, gardens, lawns, and woodland areas. A central focus of the campus is the Venetian Theater, a tented, 1,700-seat venue.45 acres of the campus is deer-fenced and open to the visiting public, including the Sunken Garden, established in 1912; a Mediterranean Revival pavilion; an allee of cedar trees; and a number of gardens designed in the 1930s by landscape architect and Katonah resident Robert Ludlow Fowler, Jr. The Caramoor estate provides an incomparable setting for our cultural programs by serving as a stage for music performances and contextualizing the concerts that occur here; providing a learning laboratory for arts-in-education and emerging artist programs; and providing an idyllic haven for approximately 30,000 visitors annually.

Education - See Schedule OEducation is central to Caramoor's mission and woven into our overall programming. Through our four mentoring programs, we identify, nurture, and promote the next generation of vocal and instrumental artists. Through our arts-in-education programs, we provide enrichment opportunities to schoolchildren from Westchester County and New York City.Evnin Rising StarsFor nearly two decades there has been an institutional focus on training instrumental artists. Pianist, conductor, and composer Andre Previn established the mentoring program now known as the Evnin Rising Stars at Caramoor in 1992; as his tenure at Caramoor concluded, conductor Peter Oundjian took on artistic leadership of the program. Since 2008 violinist Pamela Frank has acted as Artistic Director for the Evnin Rising Stars. Each fall, seven to ten instrumentalists come together with three distinguished artists-mentors have included Atar Arad, Gary Graffman, Kim Kashkashian, Ani Kavafian, Marcy Rosen, Ronald Thomas, Donald Weilerstein, and Peter Wiley, among others-for a week of intensive chamber music rehearsals, coaching, and performances of works from the heart of the chamber music repertoire. At the end of the residency the musicians perform for audiences in the intimate Music Room of the historic Rosen House, giving them valuable exposure and performance experience. The Evnin Rising Stars program has identified and brought over a hundred promising musicians to Caramoor. As the years have passed, alumni of the program have established themselves as important artists in the world of classical music performance. In 2012, seven young Rising Stars partnered with three established musician mentors in a week-long residency program of coaching and rehearsals. The program culminated with two performances; Mozart, Schnittke and Beethoven on October 27 and Haydn, Korngold and Dvorak on October 28.Bel Canto Young ArtistsIn 1998, Will Crutchfield established the Bel Canto Young Artists program. Each year approximately 30 young opera singers are chosen to receive rigorous training in bel canto singing and to perform small roles during the operas presented by the International Music Festival. Six weeks in length, the program includes daily group classes by Caramoor staff and guests. Members of the program also understudy the principal roles of each summer's operas, participating in full-scale rehearsals that provide them with the invaluable opportunity to test their skills in a complete part. They also gain performance experience and exposure with audiences in pre-opera recital concerts.Terrance W. Schwab Vocal Rising StarsIn 2012, four young singers participated in the week-long Vocal Rising Stars program under the guidance of Michael Barrett and Steven Blier. The program culminated in two performances; the first at Caramoor before an audience of 145 and the second at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, which has an audience capacity of 450.Through its arts-in-education programs, Caramoor served over 5,000 school children in 2012, with an emphasis on reaching out to schools from underserved communities in the region, such as the Scholastic Academy in Yonkers and PS 134 in the Bronx. In 2012, approximately 40% of participants received funding support from Caramoor through fee waivers and transportation underwriting. Programs include:- A Day in the Renaissance: a day of learning period songs and dances; attending a performance by a commedia dell'arte group; exploring Caramoor's collection of Renaissance art; and observing the art of falconry.- What's in a House?: a two-day exploration of architecture, art, music, and horticulture. Students build their own architectural structures; compose their own music with professional musicians; explore the historic Rosen House; and engage in a workshop examining the historical use of herbs.- Chinese Arts and Culture: an in-depth introduction to Chinese culture explores Caramoor's collection of Asian art including silk wallpapers and jade sculpture; an east/west music workshop; hands-on art of brush painting; and a Chinese tea ceremony.- Student Strings: an in-school "Concert and Conversation" with our annual string quartet-in-residence; a clinic run by the quartet; and an invitation for the students to attend a performance by the quartet at Caramoor.- Design A Day: specifically tailored programs with grade-appropriate subject matter and curriculum requirements.

<Explanation>While public tours and the annual special exhibition were temporarily suspended, the Rosen House collection remained available to the public through Caramoor's music presentations, young artist mentoring programs, and arts-in-education programs. In addition, the archival materials are a great source of humanities research in a number of fields. One example is the documentation relating to the Rosens' patronage of Leon Theremin and championing of his early electronic music instrument. This material has been a source of study for theremin researchers, including Robert Moog, who began building theremins in the 1950s as a high school student and later went on to design the Moog synthesizer and Albert Glinsky, Theremin's biographer and the author of Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage. In 2012, staff and volunteers continued to research a wealth of archival material in the Rosen House in order to develop new public programs and better understand the Rosens, their contributions to the arts, and the history of Caramoor as a performing arts center. The Rosen House collection demonstrates a tremendous breadth of art objects, furniture, and archival material. The art and furniture encompass over 1,000 cataloged objects, including European furniture from the 16th-19th centuries; European medieval and Renaissance paintings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative objects; and Asian statuary. There are also approximately 100 light fixtures and decorative elements by Edward F. Caldwell and Company dating from the 1930s. Other categories include photographs, textiles, early 20th-century costumes, and musical instruments. In addition, there is a wealth of material relating to the Rosens, the development of the Caramoor campus, and the establishment of the International Music Festival. Objects from the collection displayed in the Music Room of the Rosen House-including a wooden 16th-century Italian ceiling, French and Swiss 16th-century stained glass, Renaissance tapestries, and 17th-century furniture-create an incomparable setting for music performances. The collection also provides primary material for Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. In programs such as A Day in the Renaissance, Chinese Arts & Culture, and What's in a House? students participate in guided tours and are encouraged to use the collection as inspiration for their own writing, drawing, and music-making.</Explanation>

<Explanation>Through their generous commitment of time, enthusiasm, and expertise, Caramoor benefits from the contributions of volunteers throughout the year. In 2012 over 200 people volunteered part-time at Caramoor in a variety of capacities. This number was determined by the scope of Caramoor's presenting activities and educational programs, in addition to the availability of the volunteers themselves. The majority of volunteers act as ushers at Caramoor's year-round music presentations. They are often the public face of Caramoor, acting as greeters, helping audience members to their seats, and ensuring the visiting public's safety and comfort. * 25-40 ushers work at each concert in the Venetian Theater * 16-20 ushers work at each concert in the Spanish Courtyard * 10 ushers work at each concert in the Music Room * 10 ushers work at each Dancing at Dusk concert on Friends' Field * 10 ushers work at each concert in the Sunken Garden Volunteers also play a major role in Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. They give tours of the collection, lead various elements of each program, and help children and teachers through the campus. In 2012, with docent-led tours of the Rosen House for the public on hold, volunteers instead dedicated their time to cataloging archival material in the Rosen House collection. They also performed clerical duties for the administrative staff throughout the year.</Explanation>
