The Sugar Land Series' concerts were on Thursday evenings, beginning at 8:00 p.m., and took place at Sugar Land Baptist Church on Highway 59. The first two concerts featured the Houston Symphony and Houston Symphony Chorus in performances of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Handel's "Messiah," while the third performance presented the new ACCESS concert format of Elgar's "Enigma Variations." The Houston Symphony offered two Opening Night performances on September 9 and 10 of Beethoven's widely-loved choral masterpiece, Symphony No. 9, "Ode to Joy."In October 2011, the Symphony performed at "Lunada," a free community concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre, produced by the Mexican Institute of Greater Houston. On November 26, 2011, the Symphony performed a Beyond the Score performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, a multi-media concert format that offered an expanded historical presentation of the music, created by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Lead by guest conductor Cristian Macelaru, Associate Concertmaster Eric Halen performed as soloist Former Houston Symphony Music Director, Christoph Eschenbach (1988-1999), returned to Jones Hall on December 6 for a one-night-only "Symphony Special" performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 5 with the Houston Symphony. His last performance with the orchestra was in February 2002. In January 2012, the Symphony performed its first-ever three-weekend concert extravaganza called "Rach Fest," which focused on the popular repertoire of composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, who wrote hugely demanding music for the keyboard. Celebrated young pianist and 2010 Gilmore Artist Award winner, Kirill Gerstein, served as artist-in-residence during the festival performing all four of Rachmaninoff's knuckle-busting concertos during the three weeks. The festival yielded $170,000 in single ticket sales and 12,102 tickets. In February 2012, the Symphony performed a free concert at Grace Community Church of "The Planets - An HD Odyssey." Following the success of 2010's concert, "The Planets - An HD Odyssey," the Houston Symphony gave the world premiere performance of its sequel, "Orbit - An HD Odyssey", on February 17 and 18. Once again, producer/director Duncan Copp was commissioned by the Houston Symphony to create a high-definition film that accompanied a live orchestral performance. "Orbit's" imagery focused on Planet Earth and included high-definition images from NASA's shuttle missions, the International Space Station and Earth's orbiting satellites. Leading the orchestra was guest conductor, Giancarlo Guerrero. Hans Graf and the Houston Symphony returned, by invitation, to New York's Carnegie Hall on May 7 to participate in the 2nd annual "Spring for Music Festival." With a tag line of "Uncommon Concerts for $25," the festival is an innovative collection of concerts featuring North American symphony and chamber orchestras with a focus on unique programming at affordable prices. The week-long festival is designed to allow chosen orchestras to showcase their artistic philosophies through distinctive and creative programming in one of the world's most competitive musical environments, Carnegie Hall. The Houston Symphony performed a concert entitled "Two Faces of Shostakovich," which included two works by Shostakovich. The first work was his rarely-performed "Anti-formalist Rayok," accompanied by Russian/American bass vocalist, Mikhail Svetlov. The second work was Symphony No. 11, which was first commercially recorded by the Houston Symphony back in 1958.To close the season, Graf, the Houston Symphony and Chorus performed Orff's epic composition, "Carmina burana," along with the Ft. Bend Boys Choir of Texas. Also featured on this concert was Houston Symphony Concertmaster Frank Huang performing as soloist in Alban Berg's Violin Concerto. Outstanding guest conductors who took the podium in 2011-2012 included Cristian Macelaru, Giancarlo Guerrero, Pablo Heras-Casado and Christoph Eschenbach, along with debuting conductors David Afkham, Vasily Petrenko, Edward Gardner, Gilbert Varga, Christian Knapp, Christoph Koenig, Jakub Hrusa, John Storgards, Vasily Petrenko, Alexander Shelley. The season included performances by some of the music world's recognized stars, including pianists Olga Kern, Andr Watts, Emanuel Ax, Kirill Gerstein, Jon Kimura Parker; violinists James Ehnes, Chloe Hanslip, Hilary Hahn; cellist Daniel Mueller-Schott; percussionist Colin Currie; bass Mikhail Svetlov and soprano Albina Shagimuratova.Classical artists making their debut in the 2011-12 season were violinist Chloe Hanslip; cellist Daniel Mueller-Schott and percussionist Colin Currie. Houston Symphony musicians were soloists as well during the 2011-2012 season including concertmaster Frank Huang, Associate Concertmaster Eric Halen and principal bassoonist Rian Craypo. The Houston Symphony Chorus partnered with the orchestra in such grand programs as Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Schubert's Mass No. 3, Dvork's "Te Deum," Borodin's "Polovstian Dances" and Orff's "Carmina burana." Pops Season Highlights - The highest grossing POPS concert was "Idina Menzel" yielding $213,000 in single ticket sales and 6,000 tickets.Guest artists who joined the Houston Symphony at Jones Hall for POPS concerts included Poperazzi, Idina Menzel, Tony Kishman in a tribute to Paul McCartney, Jim Curry in a tribute to John Denver, the violin troupe Bowfire, Latin music group Tiempo Libre, and former Assistant Conductor/American Conducting Fellow Brett Mitchell in a Cole Porter tribute. POPS "Symphony Specials" included concerts featuring Earth, Wind & Fire and Linda Eder. There was also a performance of "The Matrix Live!," which featured the orchestra's performance of "The Matrix" soundtrack while the film plays on a large screen above the stage. Summer - Summer Specials known as "Symphony Summer in the City" included "Music of The Who," "Bugs Bunny at the Symphony," "Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." In total, "Symphony Summer in the City" sold more than 11,300 tickets and grossed more than $554,000 in revenue.The orchestra's concerts and annual Independence Day celebrations at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and Miller Outdoor Theatre once again drew large crowds. These summer events have become a Houston tradition, with a combined audience of more than 35,000.The Symphony continued its quest to reach new audiences during the summer by providing three unique, multi-media concert experiences. "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" was a live performance of the movie soundtrack as the film is projected on a large screen above the orchestra, "Bugs Bunny at the Symphony" combined the unforgettable music and video from the popular cartoon series, and "Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy" combined the music of the popular video game series with footage from the games themselves projected on a large screen above the orchestra. Family Concerts - Each year, the Symphony's outreach programming features four family concerts, targeted to children ages 4 to 11. For the 2011-12 season, these performances were led by Associate Conductor Robert Franz. The themes for the 2011-12 season, attended by 13,322 children and their families, were "Once Upon a Dream: Princes & Princesses," "The Night Before Christmas," "Symphony Under the Sea" and "Perfect Pitch: Music of Baseball" which featured Houston Astros' famed announcer, Milo Hamilton.Serving Houston - To honor its longstanding commitment to community service, the Houston Symphony offers free or low-cost concerts to thousands of people each year through its Music Matters! education and outreach programs.
