The museum facilitates dialogue among the visitors. It organizes and presents school programs, along with teacher workshops that assist with the development of curriculum for students. The institution pursues these areas through audience development and strives to encourage program participation with families, younger adults, museum members and schools. The museum seeks to give context to the history for all audiences to better represent the people, places, events and experiences of Chicago. In FY12 the museum had more than 50,000 K-12 students, along with more than 250,000 patrons through museum visits, adult education programs, and public history tours of the city of Chicago. The Education department hosted more than a dozen teacher open house along workshops and has created online teacher resources on American history topics ranging from "The Civil in Chicago" to "Facing Freedom Challenges to Democracy" and "Sensing Chicago". 2045797 0 183209 COLLECTIONS AND RESEARCH The museum seeks to utilize and showcase the museum's premier collections, including our unparalleled collection of Abraham Lincoln materials. The institution seeks to discover the power of original historical materials and to improve access and maximize the collections. It allows people to engage in making personal connections to history and the artifacts represented. It makes these materials available to the public through multiple platforms. The museum's 22 million-item collection is one of the most treasured history collections. It includes the second largest Costume collection in the U.S., the Hedrich Blessing photography collection, a Betsy Ross flag, and the complete library of Studs Terkel interviews. Efforts are ongoing to photograph, digitize, and catalogue the collection to make it more accessible to visitors, students, and researchers. The Research Center had more than 15,000 patrons in FY12 and there were more than 100,000 inquiries that utilized our online curriculum and online collections research capabilities. 584513 0 0 EXHIBITS Provide stories in multiple languages in the exhibitions text panels along with photos, video and the historic artifacts. These enable a visitor to explore the concepts of history. The exhibits are designed, fabricated and installed so that our audience is interacting with history. The key component of an exhibit is communicating Chicago's stories to our visitors. In addition to ongoing permanent exhibitions such as "Chicago: Crossroads of America" and "Lincoln's Chicago" the Chicago History Museum presents topical exhibitions that focus on the stories of Chicago's many diverse communities.
