SEMINARS and WORKSHOPS: The N.C. Center trained 5,259 community leaders through 199 workshops and webinars across North Carolina this year. These also provided opportunities for nonprofit board and staff members to exchange solutions, share the lessons they have learned, and offer support to each other in their challenging work. Sample topics included: growing the next generation of leaders, succession planning, reducing audit costs, technology on a tight budget, turning a great idea into a successful grant proposal, advocating effectively for your cause, nonprofits' role in voter engagement, Form 990 fundamentals, and salaries and benefits in North Carolina nonprofits. Examples of this training and convening by N.C. Center include: A) Educated 713 community leaders about emerging issues and best practices at its 2011 Annual Conference. Keynote speaker, The Honorable James Joseph, shared his perspective on the role that nonprofits can play in improving America's future. B) Helped 154 nonprofits to ensure that their programs have measurable results. C) Presented "Next Steps," a two-day workshop for CEOs on succession planning. D) Collaborated with the N.C. Association of CPAs to offer 2012 Not-for-Profit Accounting Conference with 393 people in attendance.

Outreach, Education of the Public, and Collaboration: The N.C. Center educated the public on the value of nonprofits to the people of North Carolina. To support this effort and all of our educational programs, we launched a new, robust website at www.ncnonprofits.org. This website is now fully integrated with a state-of-the-art database. It offers extensive resources on effective nonprofit practices, training opportunities, and nonprofit careers. This year, we welcomed 112,692 unique visitors and more than 400,000 page views on our site. We also held 98 media interviews with the news media and engaged 3,866 people in our mission through social media. The N.C. Center celebrated November 2011 as our state's Nonprofit Awareness Month by encouraging nonprofits to get involved. We distributed a toolkit to help educate the public in communities across North Carolina. Local nonprofits built awareness through using social media, sharing stories about their important work, and even holding a virtual shutdown of nonprofits in one city. The shutdown helped residents see how their daily lives depend on nonprofits that they sometimes take for granted. In advocating for a positive policy environment for North Carolina's nonprofits, we grew our grassroots network of nonprofit board and staff members to 7,593 community leaders in all 100 counties. Some examples of specific results include: Distributed a survey of all 13 Democratic, Republican, and Libertarian candidates for Governor on key policy issues that affect all nonprofits and posted the results on our website. Succeeded in reducing the percentage of state-funded nonprofits that have run into overly-complex reporting requirements from 77% in 2009 to 35% in 2011. Helped to protect the federal charitable deduction by getting 380 nonprofits across North Carolina to sign a national letter and share their stories. Prevented salary caps and arbitrary limits on administrative expenses that were proposed by the N.C. House of Representatives-requirements that could have put some nonprofits out of business. Held the 3rd annual NC Nonprofits Day, bringing more than 100 board and staff members to Raleigh to talk with their legislators and learn to advocate for their causes. We also multiplied the N.C. Center's impact by collaborating with hundreds of statewide, local, and national organizations that serve nonprofits.

Member Services to Nonprofits: The N.C. Center for Nonprofits offered an array of services to increase nonprofits' knowledge and their capacity to make a positive difference for their communities and causes. For example, we helped nonprofits exchange solutions and work together for a better North Carolina by supporting a self-help network of 7,593 board and staff leaders and other volunteers in 1,650 nonprofits of all sizes and types in all 100 counties. This is an all-time high in our statewide connection of diverse nonprofits. Nonprofits reported on the actual difference that the N.C. Center is making in their organizations: 70% report that they have strengthened their organizations with the Center's help, 68% have saved money or time, and 73% of board and staff members have grown personally or professionally. Member nonprofits rated all of the Center's information and resources with an average of 4.0 or higher on a 5-point scale (where 5 is 'excellent' and 4 is 'good'), and 96.4% recommend the Center to other nonprofits. Probably the best measure of the value of the Center's services to North Carolina's nonprofits is whether they renew their memberships in the Center. We achieved a 94% member retention rate this year, exceeding the 85% benchmark set by the Board of Directors as part of the Center's strategic plan. To connect nonprofits in their own communities, the Center convened local "Conversations with Members" in Boone, Greenville, Morganton, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Winston-Salem.

<Explanation>Description: Educational Services and Technical Assistance Expenses: $191,123 including grants of $0; Revenue: $31,543 The N.C. Center for nonprofits provided educational materials, training, and technical assistance to board and staff leaders in nonprofit organizations in all 100 counties across the state. These are nonprofits that want to serve their causes and communities effectively. We educated nonprofits on good organizational practices in nonprofit management, governance, and leadership -- such as communication, accountability, fundraising, evaluation, advocacy, technology, and collaboration. The center provided customized technical assistance in response to 5,243 individual requests to our Board and Staff Helpline. It also offered on its website a total of 1,200 carefully-selected resources on good practices. Nonprofits tapped this gold mine this year by downloading sample organizational policies and substantive articles an average of 113 times per day! The Center published cutting-edge resources, such as the quarterly "Common Ground" newsletter and the bi-weekly electronic "Connect & Learn" update. It continuedd to disseminate the Center's signature booklet, Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence: A Self-Help Tool for Organizational Effectiveness. This booklet lists specific benchmarks to help nonprofits identify areas for improvement as they strive for excellence. The Center publishes these resources to help ensure the integrity of the nonprofit sector and to promote stewardship by individual nonprofits and by the nonprofit sector as a whole. The Center arranged 158 pro bono consultations for nonprofits with attorneys, CPAs, and experts in human resources, communications, and other specialties that are critical to nonprofits' success. These included free sessions with a network of 166 experienced attorneys, Certified Public Accountants, and professionals in human resources and marketing through our collaboration with the N.C. Bar Association, N.C. Association of CPAs, Raleigh-Wake Human Resources Management Association, and American Marketing Association. It also includes on-site consultations by experts at the 2011 Statewide Conference for the Nonprofit Sector. Description: Research Expenses: $28,163 including grants of $0; Revenue: $0 The N.C. Center took the lead to find collaborative solutions to problems in state government contracting with nonprofits. We raised long-standing, systemic issues based on a 2010 report from the national Urban Institute. Issues included excessive red tape that added unnecessarily to nonprofits' administrative burden, governments not paying nonprofits the full cost of providing services, and governments changing their expectations in the middle of the duration of the contract. In addition, the N.C. Center conducted a statewide survey to capture the recession's impact on North Carolina nonprofits and the people they serve. We found that in 2011, more than 30% of the state's nonprofits cut staff positions, 17% cut benefits, and 31% cut services. These are on top of the cuts that N.C. nonprofits had to make in 2010 when 39% cut staff positions, 32% cut benefits, and 33% cut services). We informed legislative leaders, the Governor, and the public about these findings. We collaborated with the N.C. Department of Commerce to get a full picture of nonprofit employment in North Carolina. In 2011, nonprofits provided 425,000 jobs in our state, about 11% of the state's workforce. This means that 1 in every 9 jobs in our state is provided by a nonprofit organization. Finally, the N.C. Center provided the state's nonprofits with solid comparability data to help them to set appropriate compensation levels in their organizations. We did this through our study of Salaries and Benefits in North Carolina Nonprofits, which provides data by the organizations' budget size, field, and region of the state for 206 different positions and for dozens of employee benefits. This resource is available online at www.ncnonprofits.org Description: Nonprofit Sector Resource Conservation Expenses: $30,141 including grants of $0; Revenue: $18,767 The N.C. Center offered 40 programs to help nonprofits conserve resources so they can maximize their programs' impact on North Carolina's communities. The Center aims to help nonprofits use their funds effectively and efficiently. Examples of its programs to cut nonprofits' costs include options for reducing the costs of unemployment insurance and of retirement programs, as well as discounts on other operating expenses such as conference calls, information technology services, auto and liability insurance, fundraising software, online gift acceptance, top journals, a guide to the N.C. legislature, and online surveys. The Center also disseminated cost-saving tips throughout the year. To recognize the responsible use of resources by nonprofits organizations, from a wide range of nominations, the Center selected three nonprofits to receive the North Carolina Nonprofit Sector Stewardship Award. This award showcases their exemplary stewardship of the public's trust and of the resources invested in them.
