<Explanation>The League evaluates uncertainty in income tax positions based on a more-likely-than not recognition standard. If that threshold is met, the tax position is then measured at the largest amount that is greater than 50% likely of being realized upon ultimate settlement. As of December 31, 2012 and 2011, there are no accruals for uncertain tax positions. If applicable, the League records interest and penalties as a component of income tax expense. Tax years from 2009 through the current year remain open for examination by tax authorities.</Explanation>

They are treated with dignity and respect and cared for in every conceivable way during their stay by dedicated staff, veterinarians, behavior and training experts, and experienced animal caretakers, along with an impressive roster of trained volunteers. The animals receive high quality food twice or more per day, depending on their health requirements; have constant access to clean, fresh water; are given medicine as needed; are walked and/or played with outside at least 3 times a day; and are provided with toys and other forms of mental stimulation. Cats that get along spend supervised time playing on the "towers" and climbing trees in the center of "Kitty City." Dogs that enjoy canine companionship engage in play dates in one of the League's fenced dog parks and are included in weekly pack walks. The goal: to ensure that, long or short, the animals' stay at the shelter is as comfortable as possible. In 2012, 1,972 animals spent time in the League's shelter, with 111 of them coming from large-scale emergencies, including: almost 40 dogs from a puppy mill in Kentucky, part of a larger group of 136 dogs that were removed from a commercial dog breeding facility in partnership with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA); More than 20 Chihuahuas and Shar-Peis, from a multi-organization rescue of more than 260 dogs from a filthy, overcrowded commercial dog breeding operation in Shelby, Ohio; 9 dogs left homeless by torrential flooding caused by Hurricane Isaac in Mississippi, rescued in partnership with the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the ASPCA from the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi; and 23 dogs from a South Carolina puppy mill, part of a group of 250 animals rescued from neglect and abuse in partnership with the Humane Society of the United States. Because some animals require more specialized medical or behavioral attention than even the best shelter can provide, we rely on trained foster guardians to house and care for them until they can be adopted. In 2012 we increased the number of experienced foster homes from 9 to 50. More than 200 animals, from neonatal kittens to adult dogs, benefited from this care.</Explanation>

<Explanation>Shelter Animals The medical care for dogs and cats housed at the League in 2012 involved management of contagious diseases, diagnosis and treatment of individual illnesses, dental work, spaying, neutering, and other surgeries. The shelter frequently takes in animals with Parvo, Ringworm, respiratory illnesses, intestinal parasites, and heartworms, which were also treated by medical center staff. A total of 2,066 shelter animals received medical treatment in our medical center in 2012. Pet Care The medical center was the only local veterinary facility in 2012 that offered discounted, full-service care to the pets of income-qualified residents of the District of Columbia. Services included routine physical exams, vaccines, spaying and neutering, other surgeries, emergency care, dental work, and treatment of diseases and injuries. To qualify, clients had to have an income of $31,250 per year or less, per one-person household (extended according to family size). Without its help, the medical center's clients might not have been able to care for their animal companions when they became sick or injured. In 2012, the Medical Center provided health care to 849 pets of income-qualified patients. Other Veterinary Services As part of the national effort to confront the pet overpopulation crisis in the United States, veterinary staff at the League's medical center provide reduced-cost spaying and neutering to 530 owned pets in 2012. Veterinary staff also conducted low-cost vaccination clinics, administering 3,609 vaccines to dogs and cats.</Explanation>

<Explanation>The Washington Animal Rescue League's communications staff inform and educate these audiences through a variety of channels, including internal vehicles such as warl.org, social media outlets, and traditional media relations (i.e. news releases, media advisories, electronic newsletters, story pitches, submissions to the Washington Post "Animal Watch" column, photos and biographies of selected "Pet of the Week" shelter residents to several news media outlets, contribution of adoptable animal biographies and photos to the Huffington Post on a regular basis). The communications staff is also responsible for building partnerships with other organizations that result in increased visibility for the Washington Animal Rescue League. The League partnered with Animal Planet to host a puppy cam and kitten cam for the network on-site at the shelter. To date, the cams have a combined viewership of more than 7 million views. In 2012, the communications staff sent out 10 e-newsletters, 30 news releases, 26 media advisories, 52 Animal Watch submissions, 52 Pet of the Week submissions, 10 Huffington Post adoptable animals slide show collections, 500 Facebook posts, and 200 Tweets. They also took more than 1500 photos, many of which were used to support the written and electronic material just mentioned, as well as for other projects, including slide shows, the annual report, and development materials. The Washington Animal Rescue League's humane education program provides classroom-based visits emphasizing kindness, compassion, and responsibility while providing students with opportunities to interact with animals. Those experiences help to ensure a more compassionate, responsible, and disciplined citizenry. During the 2012-2013 school year, the League's humane educator regularly visited fourth and fifth grade classrooms at four District of Columbia elementary schools (West Education Campus, Lafayette Elementary School, Powell Elementary School, and E.L Haynes Public Charter School), in addition to Adelphia Elementary School in Hyattsville, Maryland. These visits reached approximately 200 students, who read books about animals, participated in shelter simulations, and wrote letters to the President describing what he could do to help animals. "When you get re-elected," wrote a fifth grader at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School, "you can't only help humans, you gotta also help the animals." In addition to in-class discussions centered on responsible animal care and social action, the students visited the League where they toured the shelter and medical center, and participated in a dog training demonstration that allowed them to see first-hand the power of positive reinforcement. "I learned about the surgery for the animals, the care for the pets, the tricks animals can do, the way you train them and give them treats, and the clicker people use to show that the animals did that right thing. I appreciated being there," wrote a Powell fourth grader. In addition to conducting the concentrated classroom program, the humane educator arranged tours of the League's shelter and medical center for more than 40 other school groups, scout troops, and religious classes. These young visitors interacted with shelter animals, talked to shelter staff, learned about animal care and behavior, and often were able to observe spay/neuter surgery as well as well animal exams. Approximately 800 young people from as close as Capital City Public Charter School, a short walk from the League, to as far away as California as part of the Panim's Institute for visiting high school students, benefited from these tours. Every year the League selects high school students with an interest in science to participate in a hands-on internship during the academic year at the League's medical center; last year's interns were seniors from Stone Ridge School and Dunbar High School. Previous hospital interns attended School Without Walls, Sidwell Friends School, and Coolidge High School, among others. The Washington Animal Rescue League's Caring Kids summer camps drew more than 50 campers to the popular All About Animals, Animals and Art, and Dog Training 101 one-week sessions. Seven of these campers attended on need-based scholarships. When asked what he liked most about All About Animals, a rising fifth grader asked, "Is 'everything' an option? ". Adoptions: Placing homeless animals with adopters is the ultimate goal for our shelter. Information about and photos of all available animals are posted on the League website, which is automatically updated. Each week, one pet-the Pet of the Week-is featured in several local news media and other sites. In addition to welcoming people to the shelter 6 days a week, League staff and volunteers increase the visibility to adoptable animals by taking them to off-site adoption events every week. In 2012, 67 off-site adoption events were held. In order to make the best possible matches for both adopters and animals, the Washington Animal Rescue League uses a scientifically based "Meet Your Match" system that delves into both the adopters' lifestyle preferences and each animal's temperament. A staff of trained adoptions counselors emphasizes conversation over written forms and education over judgment. One week after an animal has gone home, a League volunteer calls the adopter to find out how the adoption is going. An online survey is emailed to each adopter one month and one year after their adoption to check in on their pet. And adoptions counselors and behavior and training staff are always available to help adopters with advice and training post adoption. To further ensure a successful-permanent-placement, adopters of puppies under 16 weeks old are encouraged to enroll in a Puppy Kindergarten class (at a reduced rate), which teaches the skills puppies need to become well-behaved, adult dogs with solid temperaments. Many other classes, ranging from basic manners to agility and tricks, are available to adopters and the public. As a result of this comprehensive approach to adoptions, the Washington Animal Rescue League found homes for a record 1,736 animals in 2012. Behavior & Training: More animals are surrendered to shelters for behavior problems than for any other reason, and once in a shelter, these same problems can prevent the animals from getting adopted. Even temperamentally sound, well-behaved animals can deteriorate over time in a shelter environment. The Washington Animal Rescue League has a behavior and training department consisting of professional certified trainers who perform behavior assessments on our animals and work with staff and trained volunteers to enrich the lives of animals in the League's care and help them overcome any behavioral issues. Many shelter residents are "enrolled" in the Open Paw enrichment program. The Open Paw Shelter program was designed to help both cats and dogs succeed in a shelter. It places emphasis on daily enrichment through by feeding out of food dispensing toys, a safe and comfortable bed or crate inside the den, and ongoing work with volunteer trainers. There are 4 levels of Open Paw for both dog and cat volunteers. For dogs, the levels of Open Paw training focus on making positive associations with people using food, as they approach the den, and behaving nicely for potential adopters. Additionally, basic obedience is taught, and handling desensitization occurs regularly. Dogs are also taken on walks, focusing on loose-leash walking skills. For cats, training focuses on conditioning positive associations with people using treats, working with shy cats, modifying inappropriate play and high arousal levels, and teaching new tricks to help cats make connections with potential adopters. All animals in the shelter are worked with by volunteer trainers, and Open Paw den set-ups are maintained for approximately 10 dogs at a time and 5 cats at a time. Not surprisingly, the most serious behavioral problems are found in animals rescued from puppy mills and hoarding situations. These animals have typically had very little interaction with human beings, and if they have, it's often been negative. They may have had to fight for food, water, and/or shelter with other animals, leading to resource guarding and aggression. WARL behavior and training staff work with these and all shelter animals to help them become less fearful, focusing on positive reinforcement training, play dates between animals, and hand-feeding for shy animals. In 2012, WARL's behavior and training staff worked with 83 dogs rescued from puppy mills in an effort to help make them adoptable. They also assessed the temperaments of an additional 1,085 dogs and 568 cats. And the League's involvement with its shelter residents doesn't necessarily end when the animals walk out the front door.</Explanation>
