CANCER SURVIVAL TOOLBOX- THE NATIONAL COALITION FOR CANCER SURVIVORSHIP (NCCS) DEVELOPS PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES TO INFORM AND EMPOWER PEOPLE DEALING WITH A CANCER DIAGNOSIS SO THEY CAN ACTIVELY AND EFFECTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THEIR OWN CARE. THE AWARD-WINNING CANCER SURVIVAL TOOLBOX IS A FREE, SELF-LEARNING AUDIO PROGRAM CREATED BY LEADING CANCER ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP PEOPLE DEVELOP ESSENTIAL SKILLS TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF THEIR ILLNESS. DESIGNED TO HELP PEOPLE FROM THE MOMENT OF DIAGNOSIS, THROUGH TREATMENT AND BEYOND, THE TOOLBOX HAS EVOLVED TO INCLUDE TOPICS THAT CAN ASSIST ANYONE WHO IS FACING HARD DECISIONS AND CHANGES IN LIFE DUE TO CANCER AT ANY STAGE OF THEIR EXPERIENCE. FAMILY MEMBERS AND CAREGIVERS CAN ALSO USE THE TOOLBOX ON BEHALF OF SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER, INCLUDING A CHILD. CANCER SURVIVAL TOOLBOX- LAUNCHED IN 1998, THE TOOLBOX WAS DEVELOPED AS A RESPONSE TO EVIDENCE THAT PEOPLE AFFECTED BY CANCER LACKED THE NECESSARY SKILLS IDENTIFIED IN THE LITERATURE TO FACE A LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS. AS INDICATED IN A SURVEY OF SURVIVORS AND FOCUS GROUPS WITH HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS, SURVIVORS DID NOT FEEL EQUIPPED WITH THE EVIDENCE-BASED SKILLS FOR NAVIGATING THEIR DIAGNOSIS. WITH INPUT FROM HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS, NCCS, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE ASSOCIATION OF ONCOLOGY SOCIAL WORK, THE ONCOLOGY NURSING SOCIETY, AND, LATER, THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS, DEVELOPED AN AUDIO PROGRAM TO TEACH THESE ESSENTIAL SKILLS. SPECIAL TOPICS HAVE BEEN ADDED OVER THE YEARS. IN 2007 NCCS RECEIVED A GRANT FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION TO EXPAND THE PROGRAM TO FOCUS ON BLOOD CANCERS. TO DATE, THERE ARE FIVE INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON HEMOTOLOGIC CANCERS. IN ADDITION, NCCS HAS ADDED AN END OF LIFE PROGRAM CALLED DYING WELL, THE FINAL STAGE OF SURVIVORSHIP.
