<Description>EXHIBITIONS EACH YEAR, THE MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN PRESENTS A NUMBER OF GROUNDBREAKING EXHIBITIONS THAT SUPPORT ITS MISSION TO ENGAGE AUDIENCES WITH THE IDEAS, MATERIALS AND PROCESSES OF ART, CRAFT AND DESIGN. IN 2012, THE MUSEUM SHOWCASED THIRTEEN DISTINCT EXHIBITIONS AT ITS HOME ON COLUMBUS CIRCLE, IN ADDITION TO SIX EXHIBITIONS THAT TOURED TO VENUES ACROSS THE GLOBE. PREMIERED IN 2012HANGING AROUND: NECKLACES FROM THE MAD COLLECTION (JANUARY 24-MAY 21, 2012) DISPLAYED UNIQUE NECKLACES FROM THE MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN'S OWN JEWELRY COLLECTION. DATING FROM THE 1960S TO THE PRESENT, THESE ARTISTIC CREATIONS ENCOMPASSED CONCEPTUAL AND ARTISTIC APPROACHES RANGING FROM THE DECORATIVE TO THE POLITICALLY PROVOCATIVE. SWEPT AWAY: DUST, ASHES, AND DIRT IN CONTEMPORARY ART AND DESIGN (FEBRUARY 7-AUGUST 5, 2012) WAS PART OF AN ONGOING SERIES OF EXHIBITIONS AT MAD EXPLORING THE INTERSECTION OF TRADITIONAL OR UNUSUAL MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES WITH CONTEMPORARY ART AND DESIGN. A PROGRAM OF "LIVE" INSTALLATIONS ACCOMPANIED THE EXHIBITION, ALLOWING MUSEUM VISITORS TO INTERACT WITH ARTISTS AND THEIR SITE-SPECIFIC WORKS MADE OF ASH, DUST, SAND, AND DIRT, AND EVEN TO SWEEP AWAY THE INSTALLATIONS BY WALKING THROUGH AND TOUCHING THEM, THUS EMPHASIZING THE TRANSIENT NATURE OF THESE ARTISTS PROJECTS.GLASSTRESS NEW YORK: NEW ART FROM THE VENICE BIENNALES (FEBRUARY 14-JUNE 10, 2012) WAS AN EXTRAORDINARY INTERNATIONAL GATHERING OF GLASS SCULPTURE CREATED IN MURANO AT THE STUDIO OF ENTREPRENEUR AND MENTOR ADRIANO BERENGO. BERENGO, THE FOUNDER OF VENICE PROJECTS, HAS ENGAGED ARTISTS, ARCHITECTS, AND DESIGNERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD IN AN ATTEMPT TO ENABLE CONTEMPORARY PRACTITIONERS TO EXPLORE THE ANCIENT ART OF GLASSMAKING, SOME OF THEM WORKING WITH THIS CHALLENGING MEDIUM FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE WORKS THAT WERE ON VIEW WERE ORIGINALLY COMMISSIONED FOR AND PRESENTED AT THE VENICE BIENNIALS OF 2009 AND 2011. SPACE-LIGHT-STRUCTURE: THE JEWELRY OF MARGARET DE PATTA (JUNE 5-SEPTEMBER 23, 2012) WAS THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE RETROSPECTIVE OF THE LIFE AND WORK OF MARGARET DE PATTA (1903-1964), A PIONEER IN AMERICAN STUDIO JEWELRY WHOSE BROOCHES, PENDANTS, AND RINGS MADE GROUNDBREAKING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELD OF JEWELRY DESIGN. IN 1939, DE PATTA, A SAN FRANCISCO ARTIST, BEGAN A SEARCH FOR NEW TECHNIQUES THAT WOULD ALLOW HER TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE INHERENT REFRACTORY PROPERTIES OF TRANSPARENT AND SEMI-TRANSPARENT CRYSTALS. CHANGING HANDS: ART WITHOUT RESERVATION 3 (JUNE 26-OCTOBER 21, 2012) WAS THE THIRD AND FINAL EXHIBITION IN A SERIES OF SHOWS THAT EXPLORED NEW WORK BY NATIVE AMERICAN, FIRST NATIONS, METIS AND INUIT ARTISTS FROM THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES, THE PACIFIC RIM, AND CANADA. REPRESENTING BOTH ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING ARTISTS, THE SERIES REVEALED A NEW VITALITY AND SPIRIT OF EXPERIMENTATION AMONG THE ART PRACTICES OF NATIVE ARTISTS WORKING TODAY. THIS INCARNATION OF THE CHANGING HANDS SHOWS PRESENTED RECENT WORKS, MOSTLY CREATED WITHIN THE LAST FIVE YEARS, BY MORE THAN 80 ARTISTS, ALL ACTIVELY PURSUING A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF NATIVE WORK. THE EXHIBITION RECAST THEIR ART THROUGH THE LENS OF INTERNATIONAL ART AND DESIGN, SOME WORKS DEMONSTRATING REVITALIZED USES OF TRADITIONAL MATERIALS SUCH AS BARK, WOOD, CLAY, METAL, AND FIBER, WHILE OTHERS WERE EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE, VIDEO, AND DIGITAL ART. DORIS DUKE'S SHANGRI LA: ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE, AND ISLAMIC ART (SEPTEMBER 4, 2012-FEBRUARY 17, 2013) SHOWCASED A SELECTION OF OBJECTS OF ISLAMIC ART FROM THE SPECTACULAR HONOLULU HOME OF PHILANTHROPIST AND ART COLLECTOR DORIS DUKE (1912-1993), AS WELL AS NEW WORKS BY SIX CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS OF ISLAMIC BACKGROUND WHO WERE RECENTLY IN RESIDENCE THERE. THE WORKS FROM DUKE'S PERSONAL COLLECTION WERE SHOWN OUTSIDE OF SHANGRI LA FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIS EXHIBITION, WHICH WAS ORGANIZED ON THE CENTENARY OF HER BIRTH. DANIEL BRUSH: BLUE STEEL GOLD LIGHT (OCTOBER 16, 2012-FEBRUARY 24, 2013) PRESENTED FOUR DECADES OF BRUSH'S ART, FROM PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS, TO GOLD AND STEEL SCULPTURE AND JEWELRY. OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS, DANIEL BRUSH HAS CREATED AN OEUVRE UNPARALLELED IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN ART-FROM LARGE-SCALE PAINTED CANVASES TO GOLD-DOMED CONTAINERS ENCRUSTED WITH GOLD GRANULES SO MINISCULE THEY MUST BE FUSED WITH MICROSCOPIC PRECISION. THE ART OF SCENT 1889-2012 (NOVEMBER 20, 2012-MARCH 3, 2013) THE FIRST MUSEUM EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO EXPLORING THE DESIGN AND AESTHETICS OF OLFACTORY ART, THE ART OF SCENT 1889-2012 FEATURED 12 PIVOTAL FRAGRANCES-DATING FROM 1889 TO THE PRESENT-THAT HAD A PROFOUND IMPACT ON THE COURSE OF THE MEDIUM. THE EXHIBITION EXAMINED MAJOR STYLISTIC DEVELOPMENTS IN THE EVOLUTION AND DESIGN OF FRAGRANCE, AND PROVIDED UNPRECEDENTED INSIGHT INTO THE CREATIVE VISIONS AND INTRICATE PROCESSES OF THE ARTISTS RESPONSIBLE FOR CRAFTING THE FEATURED WORKS. PLAYING WITH FIRE: 50 YEARS OF CONTEMPORARY GLASS (NOVEMBER 20, 2012-AUGUST 25, 2013) CELEBRATING A COMPLEX, FRAGILE, AND HIGHLY VERSATILE MATERIAL, PLAYING WITH FIRE: 50 YEARS OF CONTEMPORARY GLASS TOOK A COMPREHENSIVE AND EYE-OPENING LOOK AT THE BREADTH OF INNOVATIVE PROCESSES AND ARTISTRY IN CONTEMPORARY GLASS. THE EXHIBITION SHOWCASED AN ASTONISHING DIVERSITY OF WORKS THAT USE GLASS, FROM PIECES BY EARLY ADAPTORS SUCH AS DALE CHIHULY, WHO ENTERED MAD'S COLLECTION WHEN HE WAS STILL AN EMERGING ARTIST, TO INSTALLATIONS BY ISRAELI DESIGNER AYALA SERFATY, WHO CREATES CLOUDS OF LIGHT WITH INNOVATIVE PROCESSES. CONTINUED IN 2012PICASSO TO KOONS: THE ARTIST AS JEWELER (SEPTEMBER 20, 2011-JANUARY 8, 2012) WITH OVER 180 MASTERPIECES, PICASSO TO KOONS: THE ARTIST AS JEWELER EXPLORED WORK FROM AN ARRAY OF ARTISTS, NOT TYPICALLY KNOWN AS JEWELERS, WHO CREATED STUNNING WORKS OF JEWELRY BOTH REMINISCENT OF THEIR EXISTING ARTISTIC VOCABULARY AND IN OTHER INSTANCES REPRESENTING A STRIKING DEPARTURE FROM THEIR OEUVRE. CRAFTING MODERNISM: MIDCENTURY AMERICAN ART AND DESIGN (OCTOBER 12, 2011-JANUARY 15, 2012) LOOKED AT THE RICH INTERPLAY OF ART AND DESIGN IN ALL CRAFT MEDIA IN POSTWAR AMERICA. BEGINNING WITH WORK FROM THE 1940S, THE EXHIBITION FOCUSED ON HANDMADE OBJECTS THAT OFFERED A HUMANIZING COUNTERPOINT TO A SOCIETY INCREASINGLY DOMINATED BY MASS PRODUCTION, FEATURING EXAMPLES BY TEXTILE DESIGNER DOROTHY LIEBES, FURNITURE MAKER GEORGE NAKASHIMA, AND SCULPTOR AND DESIGNER ISAMU NOGUCHI, AMONG OTHERS, AND CONTINUING THROUGH THE 1960S, AS ARTISTS SUCH AS PETER VOULKOS AND LENORE TAWNEY BEGAN TO CONSIDER THE SCULPTURAL AND AESTHETIC QUALITIES OF THEIR MATERIALS. KOREAN EYE: ENERGY AND MATTER (NOVEMBER 1, 2011 - FEBRUARY 19, 2012) BROUGHT TOGETHER 21 EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED KOREAN ARTISTS WORKING IN PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING, VIDEO, AND MIXED MEDIA. KOREAN EYE: ENERGY AND MATTER REFLECTED A NEW ERA OF DIVERSITY IN KOREAN LIFE, POLITICS, AND CULTURE, AND OFFERED A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR EDUCATION AND APPRECIATION OF KOREA'S RAPIDLY DEVELOPING ART SCENE, WHICH UNTIL RECENTLY HAS SEEN LITTLE GLOBAL EXPOSURE. BEAUTY IN ALL THINGS: JAPANESE ART AND DESIGN (NOVEMBER 22, 2011-MAY 27, 2012) FEATURED CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS WHOSE ARTWORKS REVEAL IDEALS OF BEAUTY OFTEN DIFFERENT FROM THOSE IN THE WESTERN WORLD. THE OBJECTS IN THIS SHOW, MANY FROM MAD'S OWN COLLECTION, EXEMPLIFIED THE JAPANESE CONCEPTS OF SHIZEN, WABI SABI, AND DATSUZOKU, SUGGESTING INSPIRATION FROM SIMPLE AND EVEN HUMBLE SOURCES NOT ONLY NATURE, FOR INSTANCE, A RECURRING THEME IN JAPANESE ART, BUT THE ACCOMPANYING EFFECTS OF THE PASSAGE OF TIME AS WELL, ON BOTH MANMADE OBJECTS AND NATURAL FORMS. TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS PROGRAMTHE MUSEUM OF ARTS AND DESIGN'S TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM IS A VITAL COMPONENT OF THE MUSEUM'S OUTREACH TO AUDIENCES OUTSIDE OF THE NEW YORK CITY AREA.
