Horticulture & Education: Selby Gardens' Education Department is charged with engaging every visitor in Selby Gardens' mission and story. Our educators strive to inspire a passion for nature and help visitors to understand the importance of plants in their everyday lives. Selby Gardens' Horticulture Department shares the wonder and beauty of a rich, varied, and often extremely rare collection of tropical plants with visitors. Horticulturists care for and display the Gardens' living collections, comprised of outdoor displays covering some 15 acres and eight greenhouses filled with rare orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads, ferns, aeroids, and other accessioned plants. (continued)The Education Department is preparing for the opening of the Ann Goldstein Children's Rainforest Garden in November, 2013. This new outdoor exhibition, a simulated tropical rainforest, will serve as both a self-guided environmental education experience for visitors and families and as an outdoor classroom where students engage in hands-on learning. The Children's Rainforest Garden will teach visitors about biodiversity, the physical structure of the rainforest habitat, the lives of people indigenous to rainforests, and the importance of plants as sources of food, medicine, and raw materials, as well as the irreplaceable role they play in our planet's natural systems. It is a game-changer for environmental education at the Gardens, transforming the way in which Selby shares its collections and tells its story. The Education Department has a wide variety of responsibilities, including the school field studies program; creation and oversight of signage, exhibitions (including art exhibits), and other interpretive elements; oversight of the guides program, which includes museum docents, tour guides, walk & talk guides, school guides, and conservatory guides; community classes; non-school programs for children including Little Sprouts, a monthly program to engage preschoolers with nature, Kids Corner, and summer camp; and lectures, the internship program, and other education programs.Educators also increased outreach to the community, serving 54% more school visitors in this year. They worked closely with local nonprofits and Title I schools as well as creating specialized programs for special needs children from Oak Park School and Fruitville Elementary's autistic program, Head Start, Easter Seals, and others.Overall participation in Selby Gardens' education programs was up 15% over the previous year, with increases across virtually every education program offered. The education department also mounted a variety of art exhibitions, including photos from the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition; "Florida Fantastica," works by artist M.F. Cardamone inspired by Selby Gardens' collection; and "Rainforest Masks of Costa Rica", featuring masks created by Costa Rican Indians from the village of Boruca, with whom Selby Gardens has a long-standing partnership.Horticulturists care for and display Selby Gardens' living collection, amassed on more than 200 research expeditions and through partnerships with institutions around the globe. It is widely used for research by our own botanists and by visiting scientists from a large array of universities, scientific organizations, and other institutions. The collection includes more than 20,000 plants from 10,000+ species, representing nearly half the plant families found on Earth; about 40% of the living collection is wild-collected, and approximately a third enjoys protected status. The Gardens is widely recognized as having the world's most comprehensive collection of living epiphytes (plants that live upon other plants without parasitizing the host), and Gardens horticulturists must be skilled at nurturing a wide variety of plants, many of them extremely difficult to grow outside their native habitats. In addition to caring for this diverse collection, over the last year Selby Gardens horticulturists renovated one garden area and completed plans for renovating the succulent garden and creating a new shoreline garden. Horticulturists also gave lectures and taught classes, wrote articles, assisted in volunteer training, and participated in several botanical research and inventory expeditions, including an expedition to a Costa Rican preserve where they helped to set up a new botanical laboratory.Selby Gardens horticulturists have had a major impact on the new Ann Goldstein Children's Rainforest Garden. The Horticulture Director works directly with the Director of Education to create and disseminate accurate information about the living collection, and he was a major resource for the Children's Rainforest Garden interpretation plan and for curricula developed for the new exhibit. The Horticulture Department also works hand-in-hand with project contractors to develop appropriate planting plans (including the design and placement of plant pockets for epiphytic plants on the faux rock fixtures) and to advise on measures necessary to protect the existing landscaping, especially the banyan trees and Moreton Bay Fig, that are included in or adjacent to the new facility.

Conservation & Research: Botany: Selby Gardens' Botany Department is respected internationally for its expertise, notably in regard to epiphytes (plants that live upon other plants). The Gardens' botanists are especially valued for two reasons - as top-notch taxonomists (scientists who can identify and classify plants, a discipline which requires decades of study to master) and as field botanists who work not only in laboratories but regularly organize and participate in botanical expeditions in the wild. The Botany Department cares for the Gardens' preserved plant collections-a herbarium with some 107,000 documented dried specimens and the world's second largest spirit collection, more than 28,000 orchids and other flowers preserved in alcohol-as well as information resources including a 7,000 volume research library, thousands of images, and a comprehensive set of more than 20,000 files documenting the plant species in which Selby Gardens specializes: orchids, bromeliads, and gesneriads. These resources are regularly consulted by visiting scientists from major institutions and universities around the world including the Smithsonian, Kew Gardens, and Missouri Botanical Garden. The botany department also manages three research centers: the Orchid Research Center, the Gesneriad Research Center, and the Bromeliad Research Center. Selby Gardens botanists recently completed four international research expeditions two in Brazil's Atlantic Forest, one to Venezuela's Roraima Tepui, and one to a Costa Rican nature preserve. Selby botanists also partnered with the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast to conduct botanical inventories of environmentally sensitive lands in and near Sarasota County. Botany staff visited the Everglades twice to check on the status of native orchids and ferns propagated at Selby Gardens and reintroduced by Gardens' staff into the Park in 2011 to bolster dwindling populations. Some 50% of the 200 rare mule ear orchids planted in 2011 are flourishing, as were the majority of the threatened holly ferns. Staff introduced eight more of the fragrant maidenhair fern (Adiantum melanoleucum), which has proved extremely difficult to grow - only 10% of those originally planted in 2011 are still alive.Additionally, the Botany Department hosted two interns from Brazil over the past two summers. The students worked in Selby's molecular lab on a project related to pleurothallid orchids. The Botany Department also published a new issue of its peer-reviewed journal, Selbyana, in FY2013, and shared their expertise with the Education Department in preparation for the opening of the new Children's Rainforest Garden. Selby botanists also presented at meetings and conferences across the U.S. and internationally, taught classes, lectured, and consulted on a variety of projects.Surplus:Selby Gardens ended FY 2013 with a large surplus. This is due to the capital campaign currently underway. In order to build the Ann Goldstein Children's Rainforest Garden, we have raised some $3.5 million, much of which came in during FY 2013. The Childrens Rainforest Garden is now being constructed, and the surplus is being expended as we complete the new facility, which opens in November, 2013.
