There were over 101,000 viewings of the video statements. After the elections, President Obama's video statement continued to be used as a key tool, urging him to work with Congress to enact a plan to end hunger. 1171675 Outreach and Advocacy: Throughout 2012, BREAD engaged activists in Circle of Protection work, especially in districts that were critical to the budget debate and other priority legislative issues. Organizers facilitated in-district meetings led by the grassroots activists, including pastors and denominational leaders, with targeted members of Congress. BREAD members generated thousands of phone calls, letters, and extensive social media contacts. Organizers instigated or supported efforts that made sure the circle of protection message was heard by members of Congress at the local level.BREAD's staff held monthly conference calls for members and activists from across the country. Participation has grown to about 100 people each month. BREAD continues to build diverse BREAD team leadership. English and Spanish draft versions of the BREAD team manual are on line, and we are conducting trainings on BREAD team formation.BREAD pursued efforts to expand the engagement of African Americans, Latinos, Evangelicals, women, and Republicans. We deepened our relationship with the congressional black caucus and strengthened African American voices for Africa. We expanded out Latino outreach to include a field staff person engaging Latino pastors in support of International Development Assistance, and we raised our international development perspective on the immigration debate. We also strengthened our relationship with the three Latino evangelical networks. We produced "Are You Called", a new video for young evangelicals. We maintained women of faith for 1000 days as a strong voice in support of global efforts to reduce maternal and child malnutrition and, in the process, strengthened BREAD's partnership with denominational women's groups. We also engaged a republican consultant to help us select legislative targets. 558047 Public Policy: BREAD's 2012 offering of letters, expanding the Circle of Protection, set our priorities and we advocated for: domestic nutrition assistance. Tax credits for low-income families, poverty-focused development assistance, and international food aid.In the face of unprecedented budget threats and over $2 trillion of enacted deficit reductions, BREAD members called on Congress to maintain a Circle of Protection around funding for programs vital to hungry and poor people. BREAD members and congregations wrote letters to Congress and visited with their representatives urging protection of such programs as; the supplemental nutrition assistance program SNAP (formerly food stamps),the earned income tax credit and child tax credit, and discretionary spending programs for the poor and hungry people like WIC, poverty-focused development assistance, and international food aid. The House passed proposals that would have cut the SNAP (formerly by nearly $170 billion over the next decade. Despite proposals like this and many others to defund and dismantle critical programs for hungry people, Congress made no major cuts to programs serving hungry and poor people. BREAD's $50k campaign in April 2012 secured the signatures of 35,000 people, including 2,500 pastors, on a petition that repudiated the notion that churches can make up for cuts to federal nutrition programs. Congress also extended for five years the current earned income tax credit and child tax credit benefits- assisting millions of low-income working families. BREAD members continued to advocate for a stronger U.S. government focus on reducing poverty, clearer accountability for how aid dollars are spent and aid that meets the need and wants of local people. Three key bills were introduced in Congress last year including the global partnership act of 2012, a major rewrite of the 1961 foreign assistance act. A minister who receives a housing allowance may exclude the allowance from gross income to the extent that it is used to pay rent, mortgage, utilities, repairs, and other expenses directly related to providing a home. For the year ended December 31, 2012, only one person received a housing allowance. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6 Membership includes individuals or organizations who make an annual financial contribution to BREAD or who otherwise distinguish themselves through their service to BREAD. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7a Each member is entitled to vote for each vacant Board of Director position that is to be filled by voting members. Members can cast their ballots by mail or electronic means. Five hundred member votes constitute a quorum for a valid election. This is the sole voting privilege enjoyed by members. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11 The Controller and Vice President of Finance compare the Federal Form 990 to the audited financial statements. All variances are verified against schedules to determine that they are correct. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c On an annual basis, members of the Board of Directors sign a new conflict of interest statement. Any possible conflicts listed are reviewed by the Vice President of Finance and Administration to determine if they truly reflect a conflict. If so, the statements are discussed with the Audit Committee. If the Committee believes the conflict is real, the Board Member is asked to either resign from the Board or to stop the activity that is creating the conflict. A more thorough market analysis of compensation of specific positions is provided by an outside compensation consultant on an ad hoc basis. These notes are kept by the Board Secretary and are not open to the public.
