THE GRAPEVINE, A MEMBER OF FAMILY SUPPORT NH AND THE 2006 RECIPIENT OF THE STATEWIDE SMITH AWARD FOR "EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE TO FAMILIES," SERVED NEARLY 2,000 CHILDREN AND ADULTS DURING THE YEAR. THE GRAPEVINE MISSION IS TO PROMOTE FAMILY AND COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELL-BEING THROUGH SUPPORT, EDUCATION AND THE SHARING OF RESOURCES. GRAPEVINE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES SUPPORT: PARENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS AS THE BEST TEACHERS OF THEIR CHILDREN; CHILDREN, SO THEY WILL BE HEALTHY AND READY TO LEARN; AND OUR COMMUNITY AS A HEALTHY AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL.BETTER BEGINNINGS PARENT-CHILD PROGRAM, FOR CHILDREN 18 MONTHS THROUGH 5 YEARS OF AGE AND THEIR PARENTS/CAREGIVERS, PROVIDING CHILDREN'S ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS AND PARENTING EDUCATION AND SUPPORT. The parent groups discussion topics include family values, relationships, self-esteem, families and substance use, child development, setting limits and discipline, family planning, managing stress, making ends meet in difficult times, and health and nutrition. Parents have the opportunity to gain the feedback and support from both the professional parenting educator and of other parents in a safe and trusting environment. The stresses around job loss, housing issues and making ends meet was a huge topic in all groups this year. We were able to connect families with resources and had an increase in NH Easy and Fuel Assistance applications. The children's enrichment groups focus on providing appropriate developmental play and social experiences to support children's development. Early childhood educators maintain a space that encourages the development of social, language, motor and cognitive skills. Educators help children learn cooperation and conflict resolution; provide targeted play and social opportunities for children; and model skills for interacting with children, play techniques, songs and story reading/telling for parents. Healthy snacks were offered each morning. Better Beginnings for Babies, for infants from birth to 12 months and their parents, offers parenting education, support and early childhood enrichment through informal meeting and discussion. In this group parents and their babies have opportunities for social interaction and developmental play opportunities, including gross and fine motor play (climbing structures, rocking/riding toys, stacking toys, etc.), simple dramatic play activities (baby dolls, scarves), and books to encourage early literacy. Discussion topics included: infant/toddler feeding, children with special developmental needs, health and development, sibling relationships, and caring for the caregiver. Other family support programs and resources include Parents of Children with Special Needs, Home-based Support and one-on-one parenting education, and Early Home Support for Medicaid-eligible young mothers and their infants. The Grapevine is a Certified Visitation Site, offering a local site for supervised visitations for non-custodial parents.

Community Supports and ResourceS:Information, Referral and Assistance for people in need of basic services and resources such as food, shelter, clothing, transportation, health and dental care, health insurance.Access to basic services: The Grapevine provides an office for regional agencies, bringing closer to home services such as child and family counseling, fuel assistance, employment support for adults with disabilities and school-to-work transition support for students with disabilities, family conflict and landlord/tenant dispute resolution, and homeless outreach. Community Wood Bank: Provides free firewood for families and individuals who use wood to heat their homes and cannot afford to buy it.Community Suppers in Antrim, Hancock, Bennington and Francestown, free, every week.Strength Training for older adults: Community-based, volunteer driven.NH Easy: In partnership with the Dept. of Health & Human Services. The Grapevine makes financial assistance easier by streamlining the application for food stamps, Medicaid, children's health insurance, cash benefits and other assistance. "NH Easy" allows people to apply for assistance at The Grapevine with help from trained Grapevine staff. The 4-Town Citizen Group: A group of citizens from Antrim, Hancock, Bennington and Francestown convened by The Grapevine to consider the health and well-being of people in our towns and mobilize resources to meet community needs. The group organized free community suppers in each of the towns and supported The Grapevine in developing "The People's Service Exchange." The group was used as a model by the Contoocook Valley Transportation Cooperative to develop regional transportation options that meet the needs of people in the eastern Monadnock Region and worked to ensure that people had the basic resources needed to be healthy and well as the recession began to take hold. The group is convened as needs and opportunities arise. The Brown Bag Coalition: The Grapevine convened a group of representatives from Antrim's organizations and government, including law enforcement, parks and recreation, the library, churches, the schools, scouts and civic groups. An early focus of the group-eventually named the Brown Bag Coalition, or BBC-was our youth, both the lack of childcare for young children of working families and the need to coordinate and expand community offerings for adolescents and teens. The BBC was the catalyst for the Before and After School Clubs and the Teen Center.

AVENUE A TEEN CENTER: This was the busiest year so far at Avenue A Teen Center. Friday nights have been consistently well-attended, and participation during the daytime hours was in the 20's and 30's. The new group of Teens have revived the Open Mic / Dance Party, thanks in part to some flashy new "loaner gear" that members of the community have contributed to the venue. While this new success has required adjustments to policies and procedures to manage the numbers, teens have stepped up as well to help keep better order during busy times. Open Mic hours, from 7-9 on Fridays, have been offered to "all ages (under 12 with adult)" to promote a more family and community friendly atmosphere. Younger and older "kids" have indeed been taking advantage of the opportunity to sing, play games, and socialize.New activities this year include developing an organized skateboard racing, as well as a video production program, "Lights, Cameras Action!" Photography and Arts and Crafts programs saw renewed interest. Safe Sitter, a babysitting workshop for ages 11-13 that helps prepare young adolescents for the responsibilities of nurturing and protecting children, was offered for the first time at Avenue A this year. Fostering community involvement continues to be a focus. Avenue A Teens again hosted a Free Community Supper with the help of both teen and adult volunteers. Teens helped the Antrim Yacht Club in their mission to promote sailing and paddle sports. A re-invigorated discussion of fundraising events in the 2012-13 year has begun.Successes and milestones this year come largely in the area of Teens having a better sense of "ownership" in their Teen Center. Teens are able to and are enthusiastic about supervising the Open Mic Night and other events. They are interested in space design and arrangement, and often self-motivate to clean and organize and encourage others to do so as well. A new Teen Action Committee has formed and is planning events for the new year. And more and more the kids are helping make sure that everyone is included, everyone gets a turn, and that new faces are greeted warmly and welcomed to Avenue A.

<Explanation>OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Community Supports and ResourceS:Information, Referral and Assistance for people in need of basic services and resources such as food, shelter, clothing, transportation, health and dental care, health insurance.Access to basic services: The Grapevine provides an office for regional agencies, bringing closer to home services such as child and family counseling, fuel assistance, employment support for adults with disabilities and school-to-work transition support for students with disabilities, family conflict and landlord/tenant dispute resolution, and homeless outreach. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: People's Service Exchange:A neighbor-helping-neighbor network offering people from all walks of life a community-based, coordinated structure for exchanging services with other members, including transportation, tutoring, cooking, yard work, computer support, carpentry, singing lessons and much more. Any person in the community can convert personal time into purchasing power. The concept is simple: One hour of service equals one "time dollar". Each "time dollar" a member earns is deposited into a "time bank" to be used when the member requests a service. Each service is as valuable as any other. Currently there are almost 200 members and over 250 services. Because it's not a problem if a member is "in debt," many people join the PSE when they need services, and they offer services at a later time, when they are able. This has been particularly true in these recession years.Although we keep track of service exchanges each month, we are unable to capture many of the services exchanged. This is due to the fact that friendships are formed, and "informal" trading begins to occur as people get to know each other. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: The Learning Vine is a parent-initiated cooperative preschool program for children ages 4 to 5 years, taught by an experienced Master's Level educator. Curriculum includes hands-on activities, problem solving and conflict resolution skills as the families explore community resources and integrate discoveries. The Learning Vine provides preschool learning and play experiences to support the development of children. In addition to the regular classroom activities, children also participate in special craft projects. Each morning starts with songs and simple finger plays, and each month new themes are introduced. The classroom is set up with different areas including art, paint, science, house, blocks, books and toys. These areas changed monthly with seasonal activities and themes, and activities related to field trips being introduced. As part of the cooperative, a different parent assists in the classroom each month. This gives opportunities for parents to work with the children, observe their own children, and also to get information from and ask questions of the teacher.</Explanation>
