Violations of conservation easements are resolved on a case-by-case basis. Schedule D, Part II, Line 9 Gathering Waters records the purchase of easements as an expense in the year of purchase. No asset or liability is recorded in connection with easement purchases. Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 Endowment funds held by Gathering Waters are intended to support an internship program. Distributions from endowment funds are used to help defray the cost of hiring at least one intern per year. Interns are usually students who intend to build a career in conservation work. Other endowment funds are held by Madison Community Foundation and are intended to support Gathering Waters' general operations. Board members who have a conflict of interest are expected to excuse themselves from participation in deliberation about matters involving the conflict. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors authorizes the Executive Director's salary, based in part on information obtained from informally surveying compensation paid by comparable organizations, most recently in 2011.
