Its two research libraries, the Braun and the Autry, provide access to one of the nation's most comprehensive collections of books, archives and artifacts regarding Native American cultures and the history of the American West. In 2013 the Autry served 58,800 K-12 students on and off site. Approximately 15,660 (one-third) of these students were from Title I schools who came through the All Aboard! bus program. This program provides free bus transportation and family memberships to underserved students in the Los Angeles area. These numbers will continue to grow as the Education Department offers more programs exploring diverse aspects of life in the West through the Autry's art and artifacts, and meets California state content standards in history/social science for kindergarten through 12th grade. comprised of works of art (paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and photographs), historic artifacts, archaeological and ethnographic materials, sound recording, films, and library and research material related to the history of the West and indigenous cultures of the United States. The collections are maintained for public exhibition, education, and research purposes in furtherance of the Autry's mission. Items are catalogued, preserved, and cared for according to the American Association of Museums' standards, and collection audits are performed regularly. The collections,which were acquired through purchases and contributions since the Autry's inception, are not recognized as assets on the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded in the year in which the items were acquired as decreases in unrestricted or temporarily restricted net assets, depending on the source of the assets used to purchase the items and whether those assets were restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. The Autry's collections policy requires that proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are to be used for acquisitions to the collection. Part III, Line 4: The Autry collections of more than 500,000 pieces of arts and artifacts includes the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Collection, one of the largest and most significant of Native American materials in the United States. The Autry presents a wide range of exhibitions and public programs-including lectures, film, theater, festivals, family events, and music-performs scholarship, research, and educational outreach. The Autry desired impact is to create relevancy between history and the present day and to engage the public in exploration of critical contemporary concerns in order to shape the future. The collection further our mission by sharing the story of the American West and the multiple cultures, perspectives, traditions, and experiences that make the West a significant and unique part of the world. Part V, Line 4: The Autry's endowment consists of 12 individual funds comprising both board-designated endowments, or quasi-endowments and permanent (true) endowments. The board designated endowments were established by the organization itself from unrestricted donor funds. The organization's management imposed temporary restrictions on the use of these funds. Permanent endowments were established by donor-restricted gifts and are maintained to provide a permanent source of income, with the stipulation that principal must be invested and kept intact in perpetuity, while only the income generated can be used by the Organization. Total return of the fund is targeted to meet or exceed the expected long-term needs of The Autry in order to provide a reliable stream of income for operations and avoid adverse economic impact to the organization. The funds are maintained in a single pooled investment account with a financial institution. Part X, Line 2: In accordance with FASB ASC No. 740, Income Taxes, the Autry recognizes the impact of tax positions in the financial statements if that position is more likely than not to be sustained on audit, based on the technical merits of the position. The Autry has analyzed its uncertain material tax positions for its U.S. federal and California state tax jurisdictions for the open tax years of 2010 through 2013 and the open tax years of 2009 through 2013, respectively. The Autry is of the opinion that material positions taken would, more likely than not, be sustained by examination. As of December 31, 2013 and 2012, the Autry has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition or disclosure in the financial statements or which may have an effect on its tax exempt status.
