Our Y programs focusing on youth development: installed democracy in over 200 high school students through Youth & Government, expanded opportunities for children under the age of 5 with new youth sports programs, encouraged children to learn, grow and thrive through afterschool art classes, among several other activities which offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical, and emotional growth. Our Y currently serves approximately 7,000 youth. We have been listening and responding to our community's most critical social needs since 1951. We strive to have staff program and policy volunteers and people of all ages involved in the Y to reflect the demographic profile of our community. Accordingly, direct financial assistance in 2012 amounting to $299,640 was granted to individuals and families for participation in Y membership and activities. We know that lasting personal and social change comes about when we all work together. With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y sponsored the following community programs in 2012, the Annual Community Support Campaign, Good Friday Service, Y-Tribes Community Pancake Breakfast, the Fiesta Days 5 & 10 K Run and Hike, Summer Day and Overnight Camps, the Christmas Tree Lot (which supports teen leadership programs), the Prayer Breakfast and the Verdugo Hills Community Winter Carnival.
