<ExplanationTxt>Together We Can Stop Diabetesr A crisis is at hand, affecting all Americans. Nearly 30 million Americans, or 9.3 of the population, have diabetes while another 86 million have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, putting them at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and suffering its potentially deadly complications. As a key leader and moving force within the global diabetes community, the American Diabetes Association the Association is working relentlessly to provide targeted programs and lifesaving resources for those living with diabetes, their families, health care professionals, high-risk populations as well as the general public. Our mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Diabetes can affect many parts of the body and is associated with serious complications, such as heart disease and stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb amputation. The American Diabetes Association funds research and implements prevention and education programs to help curb the trajectory of the diabetes epidemic and lessen the severity of these potentially deadly complications. Some complications, especially micro vascular e.g., eye, kidney, and nerve disease, can be reduced with proper blood glucose control. Also, early detection and treatment of complications can prevent progression, so monitoring health with dilated eye exams, urine tests, and foot exams is essential. Our resources and programs, which can be accessed online, over the phone or through activities and events in communities across the county, help to educate both those living with, and at risk for diabetes to better know the warning signs of the disease and offer assistance on how to take control of their personal health. Among many complications, the risk of cardiovasculardisease is increased in diabetes and prediabetes, making blood pressure and lipid management, along with smoking cessation, especially important. By working together, people with diagnosed diabetes, their support network, and their health care providers can reduce the occurrence of these and other complications. According to the latest National Diabetes Statistics report releases by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, the total estimated cost of diagnosed diabetes in 2012 was 245 billion, including 176 billion in direct medical costs and 69 billion in decreased productivity. Decreased productivity includes costs associated with people being absent from work, being less productive while at work, or not being able to work at all because of diabetes. Diabetes and its complications account for 10 percent of all U.S. health care dollars. Worse yet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050, making our movement to Stop Diabetesr even more critical.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Research -Taking the Lead in Research The American Diabetes Association direct involvement in diabetes research extends back to the 1940s when Dr. Charles H. Best, one of four scientists credited with discovering insulin, provided the Association with the framework and early leadership for a formalized diabetes research program. Since the Research Program inception in 1952, the Association has been the leader in funding and supporting cutting-edge diabetes research that has made a crucial difference to people affected by diabetes around the world. In 2013, the Association has 35.7 million was awarded to support a broad spectrum of diabetes research. Over the years, the Association has supported more than 4,000 research projects and invested more than 675 million in diabetes research. Association-funded research leads to innovative solutions that improve the lives of all people with diabetes. The program supports basic science to increase the understanding of how diabetes develops and to identify novel targets for development of new drugs to treat diabetes. Clinical investigations supported by the Association test the effects of new treatments in people with diabetes, and examine the impact of educational and behavioral approaches on diabetes care. Association research has been critical in the development of technologies leading to modern insulin pumps and blood glucose sensors laid the groundwork for development of many of the new classes of oral medications that are now used to prevent and treat diabetes and has provided evidence for the importance of diet and exercise in diabetes management and the role of blood glucose control in reducing complications. New investigators and innovative ideas are critical to improving diabetes care and to finding a cure. Believing in the drive and potential of young and promising researchers, the Association offers training and career development awards to support scientists interested in diabetes research at the early stages of their research careers-from graduate and medical school through assistant professorship. A focus on early-career researchers and innovation makes the Association research programs distinct from what is funded by the federal government, and is essential to the mission. As evidence of the impact of funding these early career scientists, 98 percent of researchers supported by the Association continue their careers in diabetes research. The primary goals of the Association Research Program are-Support the highest quality science across the broad spectrum of diabetes research. -Support investigators early in their careers to encourage them to dedicate their efforts to diabetes research. -Support innovative research with a high potential to have a significant impact for patients with diabetes.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Information - Leading the Field in Information Sharing Life - saving Tools and Resources When it comes to diabetes, knowing the facts can make the difference between life and death. As a trusted leader in the global diabetes community, the American Diabetes Association is committed to ensuring that those at risk for developing diabetes, those affected by the disease and their health care team, as well as the general public receive targeted, timely, and accurate information. The Association delivers trusted information and resources that people can access at any time, in multiple formats. Its all about providing high - quality, accurate, and relevant content for people affected by diabetes - how they want it and when they want it. We focus our efforts on three outcomes 1.Raising awareness of diabetes as a serious disease. 2.Raising the visibility of the epidemic of diabetes through awareness and education initiatives.3.Reaching diverse groups of people who are at risk for or have diabetes, their families and health care professionals with the goal of reducing the incidence of diabetes and the impact of complications. A key component in making a difference in the fight against diabetes is to help people understand their risk. The Association works to educate people about the warning signs and dangers surrounding this disease, and that information is followed with resourcesencouraging healthy eating, physical activity, and appropriate clinical care. The Association residential program enlists neighborhood representatives to share American Diabetes Association diabetes information with people living in their communities. In 2013, this program engaged 145,830 volunteers to distribute 1.1 million Diabetes Risk Tests throughout the country. Additionally, the Association mailed diabetes information directly to the homes of 43 million individuals. The messaging is clear that diabetes is a serious disease and that individuals need to know the warning signs and health risks of diabetes. The mail program focuses on individuals who are at high risk for diabetes because of known family history or public health trends. The information educates individuals not only on the disease, but also on ways to prevent diabetes and its complications through healthy eating and physical activity. To underscore the seriousness of the disease, the Association asks individuals to seek help from a physician if the individual, a friend, or relative shows any symptom. The public health information coupled with the request to take specific action combines to create a powerful educational tool, especially in the hands of persons already concerned with health risks. All of the mail recipients are considered to be affected by diabetes. Research has proven that just about all Americans are affected by diabetes- if not through known direct contact with the disease, then through legislation or rising costs of a health system which must support the cost of diabetes, or perhaps they are one of the millions with diabetes who are unaware they have the disease or even one of the 86 million Americans who have prediabetes, a type of high blood glucose that places them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.</ExplanationTxt>

In our ongoing efforts to increase funding and raise awareness for vital diabetes research and prevention programs, more than 200 Diabetes Advocates from 45 states and Washington, D.C., journeyed across the country for the Association Call to Congress. Takingpart in more than 220 meetings with Members of Congress and their staff, Diabetes Advocates shared their personal diabetes story to put a name and face to the diabetes epidemic, and to make the case for an increased investment to curb the trajectory of the disease. Our advocacy efforts continued throughout the year, strengthened our voice on Capitol Hill, state capitols, and with the executive branch of government as Diabetes Advocates took action through Congressional briefings, increased in-district meetings, state advocacy days, press events, tens of thousands of emails and phone calls to elected officials, meetings with administration officials, and through coalition work, including founding a coalition to support funding for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. The Association continued aggressive advocacy efforts to ensure access for people with diabetes during implementation of the Affordable Care Act ACA through numerous official comments, letters and meetings with Administration officials with a focus onexpanding coverage for low income Americans, federal rules around wellness programs and consumer protections, and implementation of state marketplaces. An aggressive educational outreach plan around the ACA, reached more than 2.5 million people. Media about the American Diabetes Association and access to care for people with diabetes under the ACA reached more than 70 million people.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>The Association continued to strategically build outside support for our advocacy efforts, making important inroads in increasing diabetes advocacy in disparately impacted populations by presenting at high profile conferences including the National Hispanic Medical Association Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Diabetes Coalition National Association of Black Journalists Congressional Black Caucus National Indian Health Board and the League of United Latin American Citizens. A series of new consumer and policy sheets for the African American, Asian Pacific American, and Latino communities and translated key advocacy documents into Spanish. The Association continued the leadership role in promoting equal employment opportunity for people with diabetes. Years of litigation against an interstate motor coach company resulted in the development of a new policy to individually assess bus drivers with non-insulin treated diabetes, a major victory with nationwide implications both inside and outside the company involved. Working to improve the care of people with diabetes who encounter law enforcement officers, Association efforts included collaborations with two of the largest police departments in the country, New York City and Philadelphia, and campaign to educate law enforcement personnel about diabetes, with Diabetes Advocates blanketing 31 states and the District of Columbia and reaching nearly 400 different law enforcement agencies with educational materials about diabetes and policing.Leading the Call The clock is ticking in the race against diabetes. With nearly 30 million Americans living with diabetes and another 86 million with prediabetes, the time is now to reach out to all Americans and make sure everyone understands that diabetes is not just a condition, but a disease with deadly consequences. The American Diabetes Association is leading a multi-faceted call to action via targeted public awareness efforts and education programs.</ExplanationTxt>
