<MissionDesc>Memorial Assistance Ministries' (MAM) mission is to assure that families have the means to meet their basic needs. To carry out our mission, MAM assists families facing financial crisis to avoid homelessness. <Desc>MAM's SELF-SUFFICIENCY PROGRAMS position families to meet their basic needs on their own with improved employment, financial coaching and English language skills. Heads of households in crisis become engaged in stabilizing their lives with access to Employment Services, Case Management, English as a Second Language and complementary programs provided at MAM by partner organizations. In late 2013 in partnership with Catholic Charities' Cabrini Center for Immigration Legal Services, MAM made immigration education and application assistance available to the community. MAM assisted 606 people seeking employment in 2013 by providing them with the education, tools, and support needed to obtain gainful employment in order to stabilize the family; including 1,442 job coaching sessions, 190 mock interviews and 1,205 computer training sessions. Additionally, 74 clients graduated from the Employment Certification program with 66% obtaining jobs. Case Managers work with families to develop self-sufficiency plans that include MAM financial assistance in decreasing amounts as family budgets become balanced. The Case Manager also coordinates public benefits and other social service resources for families in need. Case Managers worked with 260 families in 2013. English as a Second Language offers 6 levels of basic and vocational English classes to adult learners at 5 sites and evening classes are available at certain locations. 59% (324) of students who enrolled in classes completed their courses. 10 students who took the Citizenship Preparation Classes became citizens of the United States of America. Immigration services clients may attend information sessions and have a brief consultation with an attorney or legal case worker at no cost. If the case is eligible for our services, a consultation fee will be charged at intake. In 2013, MAM offered these services for two months and educated 14 clients, 7 of them qualified for intake interviews. Those 7 clients included Family Petition, DACA, Application for Employment Authorization Documents and an Adjustment of Status for a Refugee. Complementary programs offered at MAM include free income tax services (2,856 returns with gross refunds totaling $4.6 million), enrollment in public benefits (1,455 clients assisted in HCHD Gold Card, SNAP, Medicaid, CHIP registration), mental health counseling (224 individuals had 812 sessions), Immunizations (762) and health screenings (284), GED (123 learners), financial literacy (284 clients) and legal counseling (369 individuals).</Desc>

<Desc>MAM offers FAMILY EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE to help families facing financial crisis avoid homelessness. This program includes: Shelter and Utility, Medical/Health, Food/Household, and Clothing/Transportation. Shelter and Utility assistance helped to prevent eviction for 1,682 clients. In many cases this means that the primary wage earner will spend less time seeking assistance and more time earning a salary. Children are able to stay in the school where they are enrolled, rather than transferring midyear. Qualified clients receive a pledge and the funds are paid directly to the landlord or utility (gas and water) company. Medical/Health assisted 927 clients who received financial assistance to help pay for a doctor or dentist visit, or a prescription. Urgent health care can reduce workplace absenteeism, a root cause of unemployment and reduced wages and prevent more expensive emergency room visits. Food/Household assistance provided 283 sack lunches and MAM partners with two area food pantries to alleviate hunger, provided families home care packs with cleaning and toiletry items to relieve household expenses. Clothing/Transportation: Families also qualify for clothing and transportation for work, job search or medical care. The MAM Resale Store distributes clothing and household items at no cost to residents in our service area who have limited income and cannot meet their basic needs without support. In 2013, 1,261 families qualified for clothing. Transportation/Other: People seeking jobs are given Metro money or gasoline vouchers to go to an interview, and, in some cases, to go to work until they receive a first paycheck. The same transportation assistance is given to clients needing help getting to a doctor, dentist or pharmacy. MAM served 994 clients this way. MAM helped 292 people pay for documents necessary to find work, enroll children in school, etc. These included driver's licenses, birth certificates, and state ID cards. 844 clients received additional miscellaneous help with things such as personal grooming aids, home care packs or vouchers to buy specialty items deemed necessary.</Desc>

<Desc>The MAM Resale Store receives donations of clothing, furniture and other household items which are sold at low cost to MAM clients and the community in general. Qualified clients in MAM's service area who have limited income and cannot meet their basic needs without support are issued vouchers that may be used in the store for clothing and household items. 1,261 families qualified for such support in 2013. The store also serves as a site for court ordered community service and local volunteer organizations. Students from MAM's English as a Second Language Program also volunteer in the store in order to improve their speaking ability. Sales proceeds from the store help support MAM's mission.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>The MAM Endowment Fund is a board-designated endowment established by the Board of Directors for the purpose of assisting MAM in meeting its operating needs. The primary objective of the endowment fund is long-term appreciation. MAM's objective for the endowment's investment portfolio is moderate capital growth while achieving performance at least equal to appropriate benchmarks, and with some focus on income for distribution to MAM. Spending policies include provisions for appropriating up to 50% of the prior year dividends and interest earned on the fund to be withdrawn at the start of each calendar year to be used for ongoing support of operations. Funds may be withdrawn in the event of an emergency, unbudgeted maintenance, or unbudgeted capital requirements, with the approval of the Board of Directors.</ExplanationTxt>
