In 2013, over 3,000 children and teens enjoyed amazing overnight experiences at YMCA Camp Ernst. Throughout the summer, the Y provides activities, literacy and learning opportunities to over 6,000 children through day and residential camps. An excellent option for working parents, many families find this character-building time as important as a critical source of summer child care. Day camp programs have implemented Drop Everything and Read Initiative to encourage youth to read for a minimum of 30 minutes per day in order to combat summer reading loss. (At residential camp (YMCA Camp Ernst), 300 children and teens were served weekly for ten weeks. Over 10% of these camp participants were awarded full or partial scholarships to cover the cost of camp). The camp provides an incentive for all campers to perform community service (known as Community Exchange) for as many as 20 hours.
