A simple project can make a significant difference in the lives of all villagers. Shanta supported two villages to install solar lighting systems in 175 homes, helped construct a new clean water system in a third village, and supported the construction of a new primary school in a fourth village. 53521 6947 0 Education and Health Services - A successful educational system inspires a lifetime love of learning and is critical to cementing long-term change in village development. Shanta provided opportunities for all village children to gain a comprehensive education by providing 69 middle, high school and university scholarships and also held an English language summer school for 38 children. Shanta also provided monthly supervision of five village nurses and led training for 36 women who facilitated educational workshops for 693 reproductive-age women in safe motherhood practices. The annual dental clinic examined and treated 553 children and adults. 47036 0 0 Economic and Leadership Development - Economic development projects create financial growth opportunities for all families, especially women, to increase quality of life and provide funding for village development activities. Shanta initiated 14 pig farms, 400 coffee farms and other small business development. In addition, Shanta initiated two community lending programs and one new business loan program. We continually monitor activities by performing on-site visits and conference calls. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2 The founders of Shanta Foundation are Michael and Patricia Karpfen (married). Mr. Karpfen serves as our part-time paid executive director and Mrs. Karpfen serves on the Board of Directors. She abstains from all discussions regarding Mr. Karpfen's earnings and job performance. She has had no influence as a board member on the hiring and supervision of Mr. Karpfen. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b All board members were given copies of the draft 990 and accompanying schedules a month prior to submission. Questions/observations were discussed via telephone or in person prior to filing the return. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c Board members review and certify understanding and compliance by signing our Conflict of Interest Policy when they join the board. Annually, the policy is reviewed at a board meeting and the board members are required to initial and recertify that they are in compliance. Additionally, if and when such a conflict arises, the member must report the conflict to the board president within five days. The president consults the board to determine if any action is needed to minimize the conflict. Data considered when determining compensation includes job description, qualifications of staff member, comparable salaries in the region, and cost of living.
