Some of the most common reasons Part III, Line 4a for the declines include water pollution, dams and Part III, Line 4a degraded habitats. PDE is working to restore this Part III, Line 4a important species through our Freshwater Mussel Recovery Part III, Line 4a Program. This multi-tiered program brings scientists Part III, Line 4a and volunteers together to survey streams and reintroduce Part III, Line 4a mussels where they have been lost. In recent years, PDE Part III, Line 4a began the Volunteer Freshwater Mussel Surveys. This program Part III, Line 4a trains teams of volunteers to survey their local streams Part III, Line 4a for freshwater mussels and then record their findings in Part III, Line 4a an online portal. In 2013, PDE teamed up with local Part III, Line 4a watershed organizations to train 60 volunteers at three Part III, Line 4a workshops held in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Part III, Line 4a Volunteers from these workshops have surveyed 14 stream Part III, Line 4a sections. Once streams have been identified as good Part III, Line 4a candidates for restoration, scientists place reintroduced Part III, Line 4a mussels into these waterways. Part III, Line 4a Living shorelines are one way that PDE is working to save Part III, Line 4a the Delaware Estuary's renowned tidal wetlands. Sadly, Part III, Line 4a it is estimated that the estuary has lost over half its Part III, Line 4a coastal wetlands since the earliest settlers arrived. Part III, Line 4a From buffering communities from storm impacts to capturing Part III, Line 4a carbon and providing a safe haven for young fish and birds, Part III, Line 4a our wetlands provide many benefits. To help diagnose Part III, Line 4a the causes and find solutions to wetland loss in our Part III, Line 4a region, PDE developed the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Wetlands Part III, Line 4a Assessment program. Through "rapid" and "long-term" Part III, Line 4a assessments, our scientists are measuring the health of Part III, Line 4a our wetlands. In 2013, PDE scientists surveyed over Part III, Line 4a 50 wetland sites. The resulting information is helping Part III, Line 4a us better understand the impacts that a changing climate, Part III, Line 4a pollution, and sediment (mud) shortages are having on Part III, Line 4a our wetlands. Part III, Line 4a Many innovative projects are being implemented on school Part III, Line 4a campuses in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill River watershed Part III, Line 4a through Schuylkill Action Student projects. These projects Part III, Line 4a are a joint effort of PDE and members of the Schuylkill Part III, Line 4a Action Network - people and organizations dedicated to Part III, Line 4a protecting the Schuylkill River watershed. PDE has worked Part III, Line 4a with 15 schools and over 1,500 volunteers on projects such Part III, Line 4a as stream-side plantings, rain gardens and meadow plantings. Part III, Line 4a These restoration projects are not only helping reduce Part III, Line 4a stormwater pollution, but are also teaching the next generation Part III, Line 4a about protecting our waterways.
