Our organizational goals are 1) Provide opportunities for youth to personally connect to the outdoors; 2) Provide life skills training through a healthy lifestyles model; 3) Offer opportunities for academic success in youth/young adults; 4) Provide enhanced employment opportunities through job skills development; 5) Engage young adults in meaningful conservation projects; 6) Forge partnerships with land management agencies, local community services, and non-profit organizations; 7) Promote a sense of belonging to communities and to environments; 8) Employ a diverse mix of ethnic, economic, and social backgrounds to reflect our service community; and 9) Promote civic and social responsibility.RMYC provides comprehensive services to an estimated 520 youth and young adults to become more self-sufficient, and to develop job readiness and leadership skills, environmental awareness, civic engagement, educational success and healthy lifestyles to succeed in the classroom, the home, and the workforce. RMYC currently operates three programs: Conservation Corps, Service Learning Corps (SLC), and Yampa Valley Science School (YVSS). The education component of both Conservation Corps and Service Learning Corps consists of a Service Learning Curriculum and includes job readiness, career development, leadership skills, lifeskills training, environmental education, and civic and social responsibility. Projects include building and maintenance of trails, bridges, fences and fire fuels reduction. Collectively, the SLC program and the three levels of conservation corps (Community Youth Corps, Regional Conservation Corps, and Leadership Crews) create a continuum of services designed to provide a progression of civic engagement, employment and education opportunities, and healthy lifestyles for local youth. A participant can begin this journey at age 10, and continue to gain new skills through experiential learning to age 25 (30 for Veterans).Conservation corps serves over 170 youth ages 14-25 annually through three age-level programs: Community Youth Corps (14-16), Regional Conservation Crews (16-18) and Leadership Crews (18-25). Leadership Crews include Historic Preservation and the new Veterans Crew, which serves veterans up to the age of 30 years on our chainsaw and fire fuels reduction crews, and was implemented to assist homecoming veterans in their assimilation back into civilian life, and to give them marketable skills. RMYC utilizes a third party professional evaluation firm to measure our youth development outcomes. The 2013 outcome results are listed below. Initial Outcomes:Participating conservation corps members felt a greater sense of self value, peer value, and community value through the following initial outcomes:1.100% of corps members surveyed reported having meaningful responsibilities.2.99% of corps members reported having challenging tasks.3.98% of corps members surveyed reported feeling they had a voice in important team decisions.4.98% of corps members surveyed reported feeling like they had freedom to develop and use their own ideas.5.98% of corps members surveyed reported that they felt they were an important part of a team.6.100% of corps members surveyed reported that they feel they made a contribution.Intermediate Outcomes:Conservation corps participants surveyed demonstrated increased personal and professional skills and knowledge based on the following intermediate outcomes:1.Almost all of the corps members (89%) agreed or strongly agreed that their experience in the youth corps helped them consider future career options. Most corps members (97%) also agreed or strongly agreed that their experience provided them with valuable tools for obtaining future employment. 2.Corps members surveyed demonstrated significant decreases in their previous 30-day use of alcohol (from 51% use to 9% use) and marijuana (from 23% use to 7% use). 3.Participants demonstrated increases in the importance of exercise and nutrition.Additional Measurements:1.94% expressed satisfaction with their corps experience.2.93% reported they would probably or definitely recommend youth corps to others.3.99% of participants reported that they felt the service they performed for the community was somewhat or very helpful.The Service Learning Corps (SLC) is a comprehensive community service program that provides education about citizenship, volunteerism, and self-development. SLC enhances the sense of belonging and connectedness of youth to their communities through education and meaningful service projects for public benefit throughout Routt County. Youth complete service projects that benefit nonprofits and the general public in a crew-based format. The achievement of 2013 outcomes were measured through post surveys and data logs:Outputs:1.51 youth participants received a minimum of 6 hours of education and training each.2.35 participants performed the full 56 hours. 12 participants performed 49-55 hours. 2 participants performed 28 hours [one week]. 3.11 non-profit or governmental agencies benefitted. Initial Outcomes:The following initial outcomes of the service measured our success at providing a quality program, as measured by a post program self-report survey:1.100% of participants felt that they help others in their community or in need. 2.81% participants felt that they take responsibility for their own actions. 3.85% of participants felt that they work well on a team. 4.69% of participants felt that they set goals for themselves. Intermediate Outcomes:Participating Service Learning Corps members felt a greater sense of self value, peer value, and community value through the following intermediate outcomes:1.93% of participants surveyed demonstrated an increase in civic engagement by reporting that they think SLC helped them want to do more for their community in the future. 2.66% of participants surveyed reported that SLC helped them feel more confident.Ultimately, these outcomes will lead to strong bonds to community, increased academic success, and a healthy and productive adulthood.Yampa Valley Science School serves all Routt County sixth grade students (about 280) and about 20-30 high school students each year in a residential, experiential program that incorporates a 5-day residential, educational curriculum, culminating with a conservation service project. The education includes CO Dept of Education content standards in environmental science, as well as social and civic responsibility, adult mentorship, healthy nutrition, and physical fitness. The results for the 2013 program year were as follows:1.Sixth grade participants demonstrated an increase in education understanding of 36% based on the pre-post education test results.2.80% of sixth-graders reported that science school helped them feel more comfortable with their teachers, 87% with high school students, and 91% with other middle school students, as measured through a self-report post survey.3.Results: 93% of students reported that science school helped them feel that they can help their community.4.100% of students stated Yes they enjoyed their experience at YVSS.5.100% of the reporting high school Junior Leaders reported that science school helped them feel that they are valued by their community. 6.100% of the reporting high school Junior Leaders reported that science school helped them feel that they can help their community. 7.100% of high school Junior Leaders felt that science school helped them to gain leadership skills.8.100% of high school Junior Leaders stated they enjoyed their YVSS experience.Additionally, RMYC has also taken the lead in creating the Routt County Youth Services Coalition, a network of youth advocates and service providers committed to enhancing the quality of life for youth and young adults.
