<Desc>OAKLAND INSTITUTE'S WORK TO BRING THE VOICES OF IMPACTED COMMUNITIES TO THE FOREFRONT; STOP RESOURCE THEFTS; AND STRENGTHEN LAND RIGHTS OF COMMUNITIES WORLDWIDE GAINED NEW GROUND IN 2013. HERE WE SHARE ONLY FOUR HIGHLIGHTS DEMONSTRATING THE DYNAMIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RESEARCH, ADVOCACY, AND INTERNATIONAL MEDIA COVERAGE RESULTING IN CLEAR WINS. 1. WHEN USAID AND DFID CONCLUDED THAT ALLEGATIONS OF LAND GRAB RELATED ABUSE AND FORCED EVICTIONS IN ETHIOPIA WERE "UNSUBSTANTIATED," OI RELEASED RECORDINGS OF THEIR INTERVIEWS WITH VILLAGERS, CONDUCTED IN-DEPTH RESEARCH, AND IN SEVERAL REPORTS SHOWED PERSUASIVELY HOW THESE AGENCIES SUPPORT REPRESSION IN ETHIOPIA. FOLLOWING OUR ADVOCACY, US CONGRESS PASSED THE 2014 APPROPRIATIONS BILL CONTAINING PROVISIONS TO ENSURE US DEVELOPMENT FUNDS ARE NOT USED TO SUPPORT FORCED EVICTIONS IN ETHIOPIA. 2. OI'S REPORT ON HERAKLES FARMS IN CAMEROON EXPOSED THE TRUTH BEHIND THIS DECEPTIVE "GREEN" INVESTMENT. THE TRACTS OF LAND NOW UP FOR NEGOTIATION HAVE SHRUNK FROM 73,000 TO 19,843 HA AND THE 99 YEAR LONG LEASE IS A THREE YEAR TEMPORARY CONCESSION NOW. 3. IN PNG, VILLAGERS WHO DEPEND ON NATURAL RESOURCES FOR SURVIVAL ARE BEING SWINDLED OUT OF THEIR LAND SO THAT FOREIGN CORPORATIONS CAN FELL RAINFOREST AND DEVELOP PALM OIL PLANTATIONS. OUR FILM AND REPORT, ON OUR LAND, AMPLIFIED STRUGGLES OF LOCAL PEOPLE. WITH GROWING PRESSURE, PNG'S PRIME MINISTER O'NEILL HAS CONCEDED THAT LAND LEASES ABUSED BY THE TIMBER INDUSTRY WILL BE CANCELED. THE PEOPLE OF COLLINGWOOD BAY HAVE WON BACK THEIR LAND FROM MALAYSIAN LOGGERS AND OIL PALM COMPANIES. 4. WE INITIATED AND ARE COORDINATING OUR LAND OUR BUSINESS, A MULTI- CONTINENT CAMPAIGN (NOW WITH OVER 200 CIVIL SOCIETY MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS) TO STOP THE WORLD BANK'S DOING BUSINESS AND BENCHMARKING THE BUSINESS OF AGRICULTURE INDICATORS, STRUCTURAL DRIVERS OF PRACTICES THAT DISPOSSESS SOME THE POOREST AND MOST MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES. KEY LEARNINGS 1. LAND AND RESOURCE THEFT IS THE KEY ISSUE CONFRONTING THE POOREST TODAY. RELATED PROBLEMS OF CLIMATE JUSTICE, POVERTY, FOOD SECURITY, AND THREATS TO CULTURAL AND BIO DIVERSITY ADD FURTHER URGENCY TO OUR WORK. 2. A POLICY THINK TANK CAN MAKE A DECISIVE CONTRIBUTION AND SUPPORT STRUGGLES OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES. 3. BE ACCOUNTABLE TO IMPACTED COMMUNITIES. GIVEN WE OFTEN HAVE ACCESS TO INVESTORS AND CONTRACTS RELATED TO LAND DEALS, WE MAKE INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO THEM FIRST, WHICH STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY ACTIVISM TO STOP/STALL DEALS. 4. "BUILD BRIDGES." THE POTENTIAL FOR CROSS-BORDER ALLIANCES, PUBLICLY NAMING INVESTORS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES (AS IN THE CASE OF ITALIAN COMPANY SENHUILE SA) HAS PROVIDED A BOOST TO STRUGGLES ON THE GROUND. 5. NOT OPERATING FROM A PLACE OF FEAR HAS PROVIDED THE FOUNDATION FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE WORK. FUTURE PLANS 1. CONTINUE TO ORGANIZE AND PROVIDE SUPPORT TO COMMUNITIES ON LAND DEALS THAT WE HAVE EXPOSED IN SIERRA LEONE, CAMEROON, ETHIOPIA, SENEGAL, ARGENTINA, AND PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 2. INITIATE WORK ON NEW CASES IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA, TANZANIA, AND UGANDA. 3. CONTINUE WITH STRATEGIC RESEARCH AND COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY. 4 MAINTAIN CAPACITY TO INTERVENE ON SPECIFIC CASES AND EVENTS AS SITUATION ARISES. 5. ESCALATE OUR LAND OUR BUSINESS CAMPAIGN LEADING TO THE OCTOBER 10TH WORLD BANK ANNUAL MEETING IN WASHINGTON, DC (FOR SHORTHAND, REFERRED TO BY THE HASHTAG WE ARE PLANNING ON USING - WVB - I.E. THE WORLD VERSUS THE BANK). THIS WILL INVOLVE TEACH-INS ON HOW THE DB RANKINGS AND BBA AFFECT COUNTRIES; PUSH OUT CAMPAIGN ELEMENTS FOR THE RUN UP TO WVB INCLUDING SOCIAL MEDIA, CREATIVE COMPONENTS (A VIDEO, INTERNET MEMES, DOWNLOADABLE STICKERS, POSTERS, ETC.), AND SEND OUT /CROWDRING (/CR) NUMBERS FOR COUNTRIES IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH. /CR IS A MOBILE PETITION PLATFORM CREATED BY OUR PARTNER /TR THAT ALLOWS ANYONE WITH A FIRST GENERATION HANDSET TO DIAL A LOCAL NUMBER AT NO CHARGE AS A VOTE OF SUPPORT FOR THE CAMPAIGN. WVB WILL CULMINATE IN A GLOBAL DAY-OF-ACTION IN THREE TO SEVEN CITIES ACROSS THE WORLD (DC, NAIROBI AND BANGALORE ARE CONFIRMED; WE ARE TALKING TO GROUPS IN MEXICO CITY, NEW YORK, JAKARTA AND RIO). THE AIM OF PHASE TWO IS TO CREATE AN 'UN-IGNORABLE SPECTACLE' THAT HIGHLIGHTS POPULAR RESISTANCE TO THE WB'S NEFARIOUS, ANTI-POOR, ANTI-SMALL HOLDER, ANTI-INDIGENOUS, ANTI- PASTORALIST POLICIES AND FORCES THEM TO ABOLISH THE DB RANKINGS.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>OAKLAND INSTITUTE IS AN INDEPENDENT POLICY THINK TANK THAT BRINGS FRESH IDEAS TO THE MOST PRESSING SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND ENVIRNMENTAL ISSUES OF OUR TIME. OUR MISSION IS TO INCREASE PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AND PROMOTE FAIR DEBATE ON CRITICAL SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN BOTH NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL FORUMS.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>APPROPRIATIONS BILL CONTAINING PROVISIONS TO ENSURE US DEVELOPMENT FUNDS ARE NOT USED TO SUPPORT FORCED EVICTIONS IN ETHIOPIA. THE AIM OF PHASE TWO IS TO CREATE AN 'UN-IGNORABLE SPECTACLE' THAT HIGHLIGHTS POPULAR RESISTANCE TO THE WB'S NEFARIOUS, ANTI-POOR, ANTI-SMALL HOLDER, ANTI-INDIGENOUS, ANTI- PASTORALIST POLICIES AND FORCES THEM TO ABOLISH THE DB RANKINGS.</ExplanationTxt>
