Connecting the Community to Maritime Heritage:The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, host to over 18,000 visitors annually, focuses on interactive exhibits and hands-on educational programming. The Museum has opened between eight to twelve exhibits a year over the past three years. These include three to four art-related exhibits, varying from a juried photography exhibit highlighting the local coastline to the photography of Jack London's voyages to images of postcards from the 1800s and early 1900s depicting iconic Santa Barbara history, such as the Potter Hotel, the original Los Banos Bathhouse, and the Great White Fleet visit in 1908. Other exhibits include A)temporary traveling exhibits such as "Marking Time: Voyage to Niet Nam", which related the thoughts and feelings of our soldiers as they journeyed to the Viet Nam War as told by the graffiti they left aboard a transport vessel's canvas bunks; B) "Surf Posters by Rick Sharp", and C) "The Ellwood Shelling" reflecting the role Santa Barbara played in World War II. In addition, the Museum has installed new permanent exhibits (on display for a minimum of three to five years), including "Abalone Diving", the "Shipwreck of the Side-Wheel Paddle Steamship Winfield Scott", and the Museum's new, signature exhibit, "The Point Conception Lighthouse First Order Fresnel Lens". These exhibits focus on the local maritime history of the California central coast, and give both visitors and locals a sence of Santa Barbara's rich, thousand-year maritime history. Exhibits honor the people such as commercial divers or lighthouse keepers, who, through everyday actions, have enriched our lives today. The Children's Gallery engages young audiences ages 2 to 7 with hands-on activities such as maritime dress-up, making pirate hats, a hand-puppet theater, and boat building. In addition, the Museum's Munger Theater shows five feature films daily, such as local films "Santa Barbara and the Sea" and "Above Santa Barbara", along with documentaries such as "Ghosts of the Abyss" by James Cameron, and "Shakleton's Antarctic Adventure".

Education:The Museum runs two signature tall ship educational programs, The Spirit of Dana Point Overnight Program and a Marine Science Tall Ship Program. These two programs serve approximately 900 students per year. The Spirit of Dana Point Overnight Program places Santa Barbara County fourth-graders aboard a tall ship for the evening. Based upon Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s best selling book "Two Years before the Mast", students read an abridged version of the book and then they get to live the life of an 1830s sailor visiting Santa Barbara Harbor serving as first mates and crew while staff from the Ocean Institure, who own the tall ship, act out the four major characters in the book. Teachers, who are instructing their fourth-grade students in California history, appreciate the program because it enhances their student's ability to communicate, improves self-esteem, develops leadership and teamwork skills, and increases class participation. Students are taught to project their voice, to not carry out an order until they are told to "carry on", and work together to row a dinghy, raise a bosun's chair, and cook meals. By living the life of the characters in this book, students learn to project themselves into other historical topics they will read in future years, and studies show that these types of hands-on, interactive programs are especially effective for English as a Second Language students. This program has grown from 13 classes four years ago to 24 classes in 2014, as teachers continue to sign up and students name this program as their favorite field trip activity of the year. The Museum's Marine Science Program puts sixth-through ninth-graders aboard a tall ship for a three-hour sail. These students utilize their math and science skills as they chart and navigate a course, learn plate tectonics and how the Santa Barbara Channel was formed, and gain an understanding about the ocean food-web and how the loss of one species effects other species. Teamwork is also an integral element in this program as students must raise and lower sails together if they are to navigate their way home successfully. The Museum offers these programs to all Santa Barbara County students in these grades, and the program is free of charge, including bussing, to low-income Title 1 schools, after school programs, and potential at-risk youth through the generosity of local foundations and private donors. In addition to the tall ship programs, the Museum conducts docent led group tours, and provides volunteers to reach out to students at local school science nights, demonstrating activities such as tying nautical knots and charting and navigation that utilize the student's math and science skills. Once a month the Museum hosts a lecture, covering a variety of topics such as "The Great White Fleet Visit to Santa Barbara", the "History of Santa Barbara Channel Fisheries", and the "Honda Disaster". Other annual events include the Harbor & Seafood Festival, Maritime Tastings, which features presentations by local fishermen and cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs, the Kardboard Kayak Races testing the seaworthiness of kayaks constructed of cardboard, Parade of Lights, and tall ship visits. The care of our ocean environment for future generations depends on the education of our youth, and that education begins at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.
