<MissionDesc>THE MISSION OF THE NORTH CAROLINA CENTER FOR NONPROFITS IS TO ENRICH NORTH CAROLINA'S COMMUNITIES AND ECONOMY THROUGH A STRONG NONPROFIT SECTOR AND NONPROFIT VOICE. THE N.C. CENTER SERVES AS AN INFORMATION CENTER ON EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONAL PRACTICES, A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING NETWORK FOR BOARD AND STAFF MEMBERS OF 501(C)(3) NONPROFITS, AND AN ADVOCATE FOR THE NONPROFIT SECTOR AS A WHOLE. FOUNDED IN 1990, IT IS ONE OF THE LARGEST STATEWIDE ASSOCIATIONS OF NONPROFITS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.</MissionDesc>

<Desc>SEMINARS and WORKSHOPS: The N.C. Center trained 4,310 community leaders this year through 121 workshops and webinars across the state about good practices in nonprofit governance, leadership, and management. This training provided opportunities for nonprofit board and staff members to exchange solutions to community problems, share the lessons they have learned, and offer support to each other in their challenging work. Sample topics include how nonprofits can engage individual donors, evaluate their programs, use scenario planning for sound financial management, plan ahead for executive succession, develop current and future leaders for nonprofits, advocate for their causes, use planned giving as a long-term funding strategy, create a marketing strategy that focuses on engagement, and comply with federal and state regulations for nonprofits. In some specific examples of training activities, we: A) Collaborated with the N.C. Association of CPAs to offer the 2014 Not-for-Profit Accounting Conference with 442 people in attendance. B) Educated 630 community leaders about emerging issues and best practices at our 2013 Annual Conference in Concord, NC near Charlotte. Keynote speaker Valaida Fullwood shared inspiring stories from unsung donors who are expanding the soul of philanthropy. In addition to workshops on dozens of topics, this learning opportunity included in-depth workshops on federal and state laws that affect nonprofits, executive succession planning, and planned giving. C) Taught more than 100 nonprofits how to be successful in educating the public and policy makers about the issues in their communities. In our 2014 Public Policy Forum, they heard from legislative leaders, learned about current key public policy issues that affect all 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and received hands-on training from seasoned advocates.seasoned advocates.</Desc>

<Desc>Outreach, Education of the Public, and Collaboration: The N.C. Center educated the public on the value of nonprofits to the people of North Carolina in a number of ways. For example, we: A) Distributed "Quick Facts: The Impact of North Carolina's Nonprofits." B) Helped top community leaders publish their op-ed articles and letters to the editor in order to help spread the word about the role of nonprofits in their areas. C) Conducted interviews with the news media. D) Engaged 6,974 people in our mission through social media. E) Made educational presentations to dozens of groups of community and business leaders, lawmakers, and media representatives. F) Welcomed 186,570 unique visitors and more than 1,288,632 page views to our website. G) Continued to expand our website (www.ncnonprofits.org), which offers extensive resources on effective nonprofit practices, training opportunities, and nonprofit careers. H) Collaborated with hundreds of nonprofit, business, and government entities to achieve this educational goal. In November, the N.C. Center and nonprofits celebrated our state's 6th annual Nonprofit Awareness Month. We encouraged nonprofits across North Carolina to educate the public about how nonprofits make their local community a better place to live and work. We distributed a toolkit and a daily activities calendar to community leaders and the media. Local nonprofits built awareness by using social media, sharing with news media their stories about how they are making a difference in people's lives, eliciting and publicizing proclamations of Nonprofit Awareness Month by local elected officials, and holding tours of local nonprofit organizations so the public can see their work in action. We advocated for a positive policy environment to support nonprofits' work. We worked closely with the N.C. Center's grassroots network of 5,122 nonprofit board and staff leaders in all 100 counties that have asked to participate in this advocacy network. To multiply our impact, we collaborated with hundreds of statewide, local, and national organizations that serve nonprofits. Some examples of specific results include: A) Successfully advocated to ensure that legislation does not add new red tape for nonprofits in their processes, such as collecting and remitting sales tax on nonprofits' live events and in setting new requirements for nonprofit grantees. B) Tracked dozens of bills in the N.C. General Assembly that could affect nonprofits in a wide variety of ways. C) Kept nonprofit staff and board members across the state informed through weekly email updates, regular conference calls, and regional workshops. D) Kept the nonprofit sector united on contentious state tax policy issues. Through our work with our grassroots network and the Alliance for NC Nonprofits, our direct advocacy with legislators, and our media outreach, we succeeded in protecting nonprofit sales tax refunds and preserving NC's charitable deduction on state income taxes. E) Connected nonprofits with elected officials in their communities at a series of eight nonprofit town halls held around the state. F) Organized the 6th annual NC Nonprofits Day at the N.C. General Assembly, bringing more than 100 nonprofit board and staff members to Raleigh from across the state to talk with their legislators and learn to advocate effectively for their causes.</Desc>

<Desc>Member Services to Nonprofits: The N.C. Center for Nonprofits offered an array of services to increase nonprofits' knowledge and their capacity to make a positive difference for their communities and causes. For example, we helped nonprofits exchange solutions and work together for a better North Carolina by supporting a self-help network of 6,190 board and staff leaders and other volunteers in 1,504 nonprofits of all sizes and types that serve all 100 counties. In a statewide survey, 74% of member nonprofits reported actual improvements they have made in their organizations through information or assistance provided by the N.C. Center. In addition, 40% have saved time, 38% have saved money, and 65% of board and staff members have grown personally or professionally. For the second year in a row, they rated all of the Center's services with an average of 4.0 or higher on a 5-point scale (where 5 is excellent, 4 is good, 3 average, 2 fair, and 1 poor). In addition, 97% would recommend the Center to other nonprofits.</Desc>

<FormAndLineReferenceDesc>OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES - FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4D</FormAndLineReferenceDesc>
<ExplanationTxt>DESCRIPTION: EDUCATIONAL SERVICES AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE Expenses: $188,668 including grants of $0 Revenue: $38,415 The N.C. Center provided educational materials, training, and technical assistance to board and staff leaders in nonprofit throughout the state. We educated nonprofits about effective organizational practices in nonprofit management, governance, and leadership. Examples of topics include communications, financial management, legal compliance, accountability, fundraising, evaluation, advocacy, technology, and collaboration. We provided customized technical assistance in response to 5,351 individual requests to our Board and Staff Helpline. In addition to the 1,149 carefully-selected resources already offered on our website, we added 65 more resources on good practices. On all 365 days of this year, nonprofits tapped this treasure trove by downloading sample organizational policies and substantive articles on specific challenges that they were facing - with an average of 153 downloads of substantive resources per day. The Center produced cutting-edge resources, such as the quarterly Common Ground publication and the bi-weekly "Connect & Learn" electronic newsletter. We disseminated the Center's signature booklet, Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence: A Self-Help Tool for Organizational Effectiveness. This booklet lists specific benchmarks to help nonprofits identify areas for improvements as they strive for excellence. The Center publishes these resources to help ensure the integrity of the nonprofit sector and to promote stewardship by individual nonprofits and by the nonprofit sector as a whole. The Center arranged 200 pro bono consultations in specialty areas that are critical to nonprofits' success. Without this program, many nonprofits would not have access to specialized experts. We have developed a volunteer network of 154 experienced attorneys, Certified Public Accountants, and professionals in human resources, marketing and coaching. We offered these programs through partnerships we have established with the N.C. Bar Association, N.C. Association of CPAs, Raleigh-Wake Human Resources Management Association, American Marketing Association, and the International Coach Federation. We also offered free on-site consultations with experts at the 2013 Conference for North Carolina's Nonprofit Sector. Description: Research Expenses: $33,080 including grants of $0 Revenue: $0 The N.C. Center collaborated with state government to solve problems that state-funded nonprofits were experiencing in the process of contracting to provide state-funded service. We raised longstanding, systemic problems based on North Carolina information researched by the national Nonprofit Finance Fund and The Urban Institute. Issues included excessive red tape that added unnecessarily to nonprofits' administrative burden, government not paying nonprofits the full cost of providing services, and government changing its expectations in the middle of the contract period. Description: Nonprofit Sector Resource Conservation Expenses: $35,013 including grants of $0 Revenue: $29,211 The N.C. Center offered 25 programs to help nonprofits conserve resources so they can maximize the value of their programs to their communities. Examples include options for reducing the costs of unemployment insurance and retirement programs, as well as discounts on other operating expenses such as conference calls, information technology services, auto and liability insurance, fundraising software, online gift acceptance, top journals, a guide to the N.C. legislature, and online surveys. We also disseminated tips on saving time and money. To recognize the responsible use of resources by nonprofits organizations, we selected three nonprofits to receive the 2013 North Carolina Nonprofit Sector Stewardship Award, which recognizes exemplary stewardship of the public's trust and of the community's resources invested in them.</ExplanationTxt>
