The VWAs advocacy programs may include but are not limited to efforts to expand wilderness and wild and scenic rivers, retire inappropriate grazing allotments, encourage enlightened wildfire management, identify and mitigate effects of wilderness incursions, educate the public about wilderness, and restore federal funding to critical public land agencies. 39876 1000 10339 In 2013, VWA volunteers contributed 8,183 hours to stewardship of the Big Sur backcountry. Trail Crew volunteers and VWA-hired professional crews maintained or reconstructed over 11 miles of tread while brushing nearly 26 miles of trail. Also, 321 fallen trees were removed from the trail. Much of the work was focused on the Tassajara Trails Network, as well as the fantastic Cone Peak Network. VWA Trail Crew Leader Mike Heard was selected by the US Forest Service as national Volunteer of the Year in 2013. In addition to volunteer efforts, VWA raised the necessary funding to hire and lead professional crews on extended trail restoration and maintenance hitches. The combined dollar value of the efforts of VWA volunteers and hired crews is over $264,218. The VWAs Volunteer Wilderness Ranger program puts boots on the ground in the backcountry. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: The Ventana Wilderness Alliance enjoys widespread support from its dues-paying members and volunteers. The organization counted 548 members in Q4 of 2013. These supporters reside in virtually every corner of California as well as 17 other states. Over 200 different people volunteered in some capacity for VWA in 2013, some traveling great distances to support VWA programs and special events. VWA members and volunteers share a profound love for these amazing public lands and the opportunities they provide for recreation, solitude and the appreciation of native plants and animals.
