It was launched in March 2013 in 28 theaters throughout the country. The movie was then featured in 550 community showings, many organized by Bread churches in cooperation with local partners. Throughout 2013, renowned preacher Dr. James Forbes preached and taught about hunger and Bread for the World across the country. Dr. Forbes' preaching reached 30,000 people.Prayer was the centerpiece of much of our work in November and December. Caritas Internationalis organized a global day of prayer as the launch for a campaign to end hunger endorsed by Pope Francis. The global prayer event garnered 159 million media impressions in the United States, mostly due to the work of Bread for the World. The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, The Hill, Catholic News Service, and Reuters published Bread for the World op-eds about the global day of prayer. 1130309 Outreach and Advocacy: Bread for the World's 2013 National Gathering event occurred in June. The event brought together more than 1,400 people from around the country. A revival of the Lazarus musical played to a sold-out audience. Dr. James Forbes, Rev. Luis Cortes, Dr. Raj Shah, Rev. Ron Sider, and D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray gave powerful presentations. The International Day brought together 40 nutrition leaders from low-income countries, government officials from Guatemala and Zambia, and Irish Minister of State Joe Costello. This meeting helped build momentum for global progress against child malnutrition.Bread for the World's 2013 Offering of Letters generated more than 143,000 letters and more than 38,000 personal emails to Congress. Bread for the World members made 12,395 phone calls to Congress through Bread's 800 phone number.As part of the Offering of Letters, Bread for the World members secured 46,000 signatures on the petition to President Obama, urging him to set a goal and work with Congress on a plan to end hunger. After accepting the first 30,000 signatures, the White House staff stated they were impressed by the handwritten petitions from so many different parts of the country. 398891 Public Policy: Bread for the World continued campaigning to protect poverty-focused programs from budget cuts and climaxed in the budget/appropriations process and the farm bill. The final farm bill was a mixed bag. Decisions made by Congress several years ago led to $11 billion in cuts to SNAP that went into effect on November 1. The final farm bill cut an additional $8.5 billion from SNAP. But the farm bill does maintain the authorized level of funding for international food aid at $2.5 billion annually. The farm bill also expands authorization for local procurement of food and includes a provision that will improve the nutritional quality of food aid. These provisions will mean that U.S. food aid reaches an additional 800,000 people. These provisions are an important first step forward on the reforms in international food aid that we are seeking in Bread for the World's 2014 Offering of Letters.Immigration reform started with great momentum at the beginning of 2013, and Bread stepped up our advocacy on the issue. The Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill in June, but the issue has been stalled in the House. The Republicans agreed upon and published a set of reform principles, and Speaker Boehner hired staff with immigration-reform experience. Any possible conflicts listed are reviewed by the Vice President of Finance and Administration to determine if they truly reflect a conflict. If so, the statements are discussed with the Audit Committee. If the Committee believes the conflict is real, the Board Member is asked to either resign from the Board or to stop the activity that is creating the conflict. These notes are kept by the Board Secretary and are not open to the public.
