(SALA) was able to provide direct civil legal assistance to meet the fundamental human needs of more than 21,454 low income individuals and families in 7,946 cases and matters.Services included safety and protection for children and women who are victimized by domestic violence; preservation of shelter for those wrongfully evicted from their homes; protection for those facing foreclosure; access to food stamps for people who were in need of food security; access to long-term health care for those denied services; a means to survive for disabled persons who are unable to obtain government benefits; and access to debtor relief for the protection of income and property. The impact of services provided resulted in $1,273,461 either saved or obtained on behalf of clients benefiting communities in SALAs service area. For every $1 invested in Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc., $7.92 of actual value is returned to the community.Out of the total individuals served by SALA, 2,657 were served by volunteer lawyers and law students participating in SALAs Volunteer Lawyers Program. The volunteer attorneys and students donated 3,250 hours of free civil legal services valued at $650,000.In addition, SALA raised community awareness of individual legal rights and responsibilities by teaching clients how to use the law and legal system prevent legal problems and self-help in accessing the courts. Form 990, Part VI, Line 12c: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts SALAs Conflict of Interest policy is part of the Employee Policy and Procedure Manual and the Board Orientation Manual. These policies are discussed at orientation of new staff and board. All new hires and new board members are required to complete the disclosure statement. SALAs policy requires that a disclosure statement be completed at least once and at any time that a change occurs which may give rise to a conflict or there is a change to the policy itself. Form 990, Part VI, Line 15a: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management The Audit/Finance Committee of the Board of Directors is responsible for reviewing and approving key employee compensation and reporting to the Board of Directors on an annual basis. The Audit/Finance Committee is provided with information for comparable compensation paid to others similarly situated. The information is obtained from salary surveys conducted by the Economic Research Institutes Non-profit Salary Survey Assessor, the Legal Services Corporations annual salary reports, Form 990 information for similar positions in other legal services programs and other non-profits, and other salary surveys which may be conducted by other legal services organizations and non-profits. The deliberations and decisions regarding compensation are recorded in the Board minutes and preserved as employment related records under SALAs Document Retention and Destruction Policy.
