Due to the severe drought in 2011 and 2012, and anticipated issues with the forest, MPC developed a comprehensive forestry management plan. Memorial Park was severely impacted by the drought during the spring and summer of 2011. Thousands of trees were lost. In FY 2012, MPC engaged experts to plan the reforestation of the Park. The project, begun in FY 2012, will continue for years to come with the goal of removing dead trees, clearing underbrush and invasive plants, preparing the soil, and replanting the forest with a variety of tree species. Additionally, MPC hired a Conservation Director for forestry restoration and management.During FYE 2013, MPC accomplished conservation, forestry and stewardship including reforestation, watering and irrigation, invasive species control, wildlife conservation, soil conservation, and fire protection zones. Initiatives Included: The planting of over 15,000 trees The removal of over 12,000 drought-stricken trees The implementation of over 170 acres of invasive plant control The grinding of over 3,500 stumps The planning of the next phase of post-drought reforestationPark Improvements: Memorial Park accommodates approximately 10,000 runners/walkers each day. Amenities, maintenance and improvements including new trails, trail maintenance, new buildings and construction, commemorative plaques and pavers, and existing facility maintenance work to keep the park safe and available to all.
