This 2012-13 winter season the Interfaith Community Shelter has provided safe, hospitable, emergency shelter to 968 men, women, and children for 12,597 bed nights with generous dinners and breakfasts, as well as 2,900 dinners only for an additional 106 individuals. Over 2,255 volunteers from 35 Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faith groups and community groups delivered dinners prepared off site and provided volunteers to serve dinner and staff the shelter from the opening at 6:00 pm until paid staff arrive to supervise the shelter from 9:00 pm to 7:00 am. A cold breakfast with orange juice and fresh milk is provided. Free clothing and showers are provided twice a week. Referrals are made to other health and human services agencies. Our collaboration with local agencies and the City of Santa Fe has resulted in the Santa Fe Resource and Opportunity Center, a building providing a central location for services to the homeless. We are committed to continuing to prevent deaths due to hypothermia and the effects of homelessness, and have succeeded in a dramatic reduction of such deaths since the Shelter began operating in 2008.
