<Desc>Musical Performances - See Schedule OIn 2014, Caramoor presented a total of 70 stand-alone musical performances and day-long, multi-set festivals to audience members in venues throughout our campus, including the 1,700-seat Venetian Theater, the 500-seat Spanish Courtyard, the 200-seat Music Room of the historic Rosen House, the Sunken Garden, Tapestry Hedge, Picnic Lawn, and Friends' Field. While maintaining our commitment to the core classical repertoire, including symphonic, opera and chamber music, we also presented a wide array of other genres, including jazz, American Songbook, and American roots music, as well as programs designed for families with young children. The 69th annual Summer Music Festival, which ran from June 21 to August 6 and included 33 concerts and multi-set festivals, was the highlight of our musical offerings. It opened with a performance by violinist Joshua Bell and the Orchestra of St. Luke's, in residence at Caramoor since 1979, with Cristian Macelaru conducting.Classical music is the perennial mainstay of the festival's offerings, with both chamber and symphonic performances. Artists in 2014 included Edward Arron & Friends (formerly known as the Caramoor Virtuosi); the Juilliard String Quartet; pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane; the Dover Quartet, Caramoor's 2013-2014 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence; and cellist Alisa Weilerstein, Caramoor's 2014 Artist-in-Residence.Our Bel Canto at Caramoor season included two chamber performances and two semi-staged operas. The season opened with members of 2014 Bel Canto Young Artists program teaming up with Edward Arron & Friends to perform the songs and chamber ensembles by Donizetti. Bass-baritone Daniel Mobbs was showcased on July 17 in an intimate performance of works by Mozart, Schubert, and Wagner. On July 12 and 18 we presented Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia, with soprano Angela Meade, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, and Will Crutchfield conducting. We concluded our season with Verdi's Rigoletto, with soprano Georgia Jarman, the Orchestra and St. Luke's, and Will Crutchfield conducting. The two-day 20th anniversary Jazz Festival opened on Saturday, July 26 with an intimate performance by Cecile McLorin Salvant in the Spanish Courtyard. The following day featured sets by the Emily Bear Trio, John Beasley leading an ensemble of young artists, the Steve Turre All Stars (Rufus Reid, Victor Lewis, and Xavier Davis), the Renee Rosnes All Stars (Jimmy Greene, Peter Washington, Lewis Nash), and the headliner Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. The fourth annual American Roots Music Festival was an all-day presentation of bluegrass, folk, country, and spiritual music. Singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash headlined a line-up that included Lone Bellow; Bruce Molsky, Tony Trischka and Michael Daves; Kim and Reggie Harris; Miss Tess and the Talkbacks; Joe Cookston and the Bluebird Jubilee with Peter Glanville; Cricket Tell the Weather; Spuyten Duyvil; and Walkabout Clearwater Chorus. The day also included activities for children and the Social Music Hour Workshop. The Dancing at Dusk series is the cornerstone of our family music programming. This year the series included four event dates, with "Balkan Hopping" with the Ivan Milev Band, the ensemble Hammerstep, "Afrika Womba" with the Wassa Pan Afrika Ensemble, and "A Highland Fling!" with Paul Woodiel and the Stormy Heather Band. The goal of this series is to introduce children, from toddlers to pre-teens, to a wide range of music genres in a welcoming and accessible manner.Open to the public from early summer through the beginning of November, In the Garden of Sonic Delights was a groundbreaking exhibit of 15 commissioned, site-specific sound art installations, 10 of which were on display at Caramoor and the remaining five at satellite locations throughout Westchester County. Sonic Delights built on Caramoor's many assets and rich tradition of experimentation to provide an entirely new way for visitors to experience our campus. For many of our concert-goers, it was an introduction to the sound art genre. It also brought new audiences to us and helped us to forge closer ties with five partnering cultural organizations: Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill, Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Pocantico Hills, and the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase. Perhaps most importantly, it enabled a talented group of 16 artists to create new works, propelling the sound art genre forward. In 2014 the Fall Festival, curated by Colin and Eric Jacobsen, was a cross-genre infused weekend exploring the sounds of American roots, jazz, and classical music. It opened on September 19 with a performance by banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck and the string quartet Brooklyn Rider. The following day The Knights were joined by The Joshua Redman Quartet for an extraordinary program. The weekend closed with a family concert featuring The Knights with violinist Gil Shaham.Caramoor presents chamber music in the spring and fall in the intimate 200-seat Music Room. Performances in the spring 2014 series included artists from two of Caramoor's young artist mentoring programs: the Schwab Vocal Rising Stars and the Dover Quartet, the 2013-2014 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence. In addition, our Roots Music in the Music Room series continued with a performance by Aoife O'Donovan and the Stray Birds.</Desc>

<Desc>Rosen House, Gardens and Estate - See Schedule OThe Rosen House is a Mediterranean Revival villa at the center of the Caramoor campus. In recognition of the unsurpassed quality and great quantity of European period rooms incorporated into the fabric of the house, Caramoor was recognized as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, a distinction that it shares with sites such as Vizcaya in Miami, FL and Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA. Built in the 1930s, it is an incomparable concert venue, a unique classroom for visiting schoolchildren, and a haven for the creative growth of young musicians. In 2014, 2,478 people also visited the historic house for teas, musicales, and tours.Gardens and Estate: The 90-acre Caramoor campus, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places at the state-wide level of significance in 2001 and at the national level of significance in 2011, is comprised of four primary buildings-today known as the Rosen House, the Administration Building, the Gifford Residence, and the Diane Moss Education Center-as well as ancillary buildings and landscape features, gardens, lawns, and woodland areas. A central focus of the campus is the Venetian Theater, a tented, 1,700-seat venue.45 acres of the campus is deer-fenced and open to the visiting public, including the Sunken Garden, established in 1912; a Mediterranean Revival pavilion; an allee of cedar trees; and a number of gardens designed in the 1930s by landscape architect and Katonah resident Robert Ludlow Fowler, Jr. The Caramoor estate provides an incomparable setting for our cultural programs by serving as a stage for music performances and contextualizing the concerts that occur here; providing a learning laboratory for arts-in-education and emerging artist programs; and providing an idyllic haven for more than 37,000 visitors annually.</Desc>

<Desc>Education - See Schedule OThe development of emerging artists is central to Caramoor's mission and woven into much of our programming. Through our five mentoring programs, we identify, train, and promote the next generation of vocal and instrumental artists. Each year, over 50 young musicians participate. Through these programs, we have worked with some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of their professional careers. For many of these artists, this is the beginning of a longstanding relationship with Caramoor, as they return throughout their careers to perform for our audiences.Evnin Rising StarsFor over two decades there has been an institutional focus on training instrumental artists. Pianist, conductor, and composer Andre Previn established the mentoring program now known as the Evnin Rising Stars at Caramoor in 1992; as his tenure at Caramoor concluded, conductor Peter Oundjian took on artistic leadership of the program. Since 2008 violinist Pamela Frank has acted as Artistic Director for the Evnin Rising Stars. Each fall, eight to ten instrumentalists come together with three distinguished artists-past musicians have included Atar Arad, Kim Kashkashian, Ani Kavafian, Marcy Rosen, Ronald Thomas, and Donald Weilerstein, among others-for a week of intensive chamber music rehearsals, coaching, and performances of works from the heart of the chamber music repertoire. At the end of the residency the musicians perform for audiences in the intimate Music Room of the historic Rosen House on Caramoor's campus, giving them valuable exposure and performance experience. The Evnin Rising Stars program has identified and brought over a hundred promising musicians to Caramoor. As the years have passed, alumni of the program have established themselves as artists in the world of classical music performance. In 2014, eight young Rising Stars partnered with three established musician mentors in a week-long residency program of coaching and rehearsals. The program culminated in two performances at Caramoor.Edward Arron & FriendsIn 1999 the program now known as Edward Arron & Friends grew out of the great success of Caramoor's Evnin Rising Stars young artist mentoring program. Over 100 instrumentalists on the cusp of their professional careers have participated in the Evnin Rising Stars in the last two decades; Edward Arron & Friends serves as a bridge between that opportunity and Caramoor's general music presenting programs. It has thus far enabled 57 young artists to return to Caramoor for a residency week during the Summer Music Festival as well as additional performance opportunities throughout the year. The program is led by cellist Edward Arron, who began his affiliation with Caramoor as a Rising Star, and is now the artistic director of both Edward Arron & Friends and the Metropolitan Museum Artists in Concert. Its focus is to foster the intimacy and immediacy of chamber music, cultivate collaborative music-making, and engage audiences in the excitement of musical performance. In 2014, six young artists participated in the residency program and performed twice during the year.Bel Canto Young ArtistsIn 1998 Will Crutchfield established the Bel Canto Young Artists program. Each year more than 30 young opera singers are chosen to receive rigorous training in bel canto singing and to fill solo performance slots that arise during the Summer Music Festival. Six weeks in length, the program includes daily group classes by Caramoor staff and guests. Members of the program also understudy the principal roles of each summer's operas, participating in full-scale rehearsals that provide them with the invaluable opportunity to test their skills in a complete part. They also gain performance experience and exposure with audiences in pre-opera recital concerts. In 2014, 34 young opera singers took part in this program. Activities included a six-week residency, a chamber recital, and two operas.Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-ResidenceIn 1999, with generous underwriting support from The Ernst C. Stiefel Foundation, Caramoor established a residency program for young chamber ensembles. In performing at Caramoor throughout the year, the quartet gains recognition and performance experience. In turn, the quartet hones their mentoring skills with didactic performances and workshops for approximately 1,000 area schoolchildren who attend as part of the Student Strings arts-in-education program. The quartet also partners with a young composer on a new commission which is premiered during Caramoor's Summer Music Festival. In 2014, the Dover Quartet completed its Stiefel residency with performances in the spring and summer. The Calidore String Quartet, the 2014-2015 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, began its residency in the fall with a concert. In addition, more than 600 local schoolchildren participated in Student Strings, the arts-in-education program which is led by the quartet.Schwab Vocal Rising StarsThe Schwab Vocal Rising Stars, established in 2009 and under the artistic leadership of the New York Festival of Song's Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, is a program for young vocal artists. The initiative focuses on singing outside the realm of opera, including the song recital and vocal chamber music. The week-long residency offers intensive daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops with mentors and leaders in the field and concludes with performances at Caramoor and at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.In 2014, four singers and a pianist participated in the week-long Vocal Rising Stars program under the guidance of Michael Barrett and Steven Blier. The program culminated in two performances; the first at Caramoor and the second at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.Arts-in-EducationSince 1986, Caramoor has provided students with arts enrichment opportunities that utilize our exceptional facilities, visiting artists, and dedicated staff, while meeting NYS education standards. We place an emphasis on reaching out to schools from under-resourced communities, in particular schools in Yonkers such as the Casimir Pulaski School, the Kahlil Gibran Elementary School, and Scholastic Academy. We welcomed 5,770 students to our campus in 2014, with over 40% of participants receiving funding support through fee waivers and bus transportation support.* A Day in the Renaissance: a day of learning period songs and dances; attending a performance by a commedia dell'arte group; exploring Caramoor's collection of Renaissance art; and observing the art of falconry.* What's in a House?: a two-day exploration of architecture, art, music, and horticulture. Students build their own architectural structures; compose their own music with professional musicians; explore the historic Rosen House; and engage in a workshop examining the historical use of herbs.* Chinese Arts and Culture: an in-depth introduction to Chinese culture explores Caramoor's collection of Asian art including silk wallpapers and jade sculpture; an east/west music workshop; hands-on art of brush painting; and a Chinese tea ceremony.* Student Strings: an in-school "Concert and Conversation" with our annual string quartet-in-residence; a clinic run by the quartet; and an invitation for the students to attend a performance by the quartet at Caramoor.* Design A Day: specifically tailored programs with grade-appropriate subject matter and curriculum requirements.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>The historic Rosen House, with its period rooms and collections, was open to the public for tours in 2014. In addition, the archival materials are a great source of humanities research in a number of fields. One example is the documentation relating to the Rosens' patronage of Leon Theremin and championing of his early electronic music instrument. This material has been a source of study for theremin researchers, including Robert Moog, who began building theremins in the 1950s as a high school student and later went on to design the Moog synthesizer and Albert Glinsky, Theremin's biographer and the author of Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage. The collection of objects in the Rosen House demonstrate a tremendous breadth of art objects, furniture, and archival material, including European furniture from the 16th-19th centuries; European medieval and Renaissance paintings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative objects, and Asian statuary. There are also approximately 100 light fixtures and decorative elements by Edward F. Caldwell and Company dating from the 1930s. Other categories include photographs, textiles, early 20th-century costumes, and musical instruments. In addition, there is a wealth of ephemeral material relating to the Rosens, the development of the Caramoor campus, and the establishment of the Summer Music Festival. Objects displayed in the Music Room of the Rosen House-including a wooden 16th-century Italian ceiling, French and Swiss 16th-century stained glass, and 17th-century furniture-create an incomparable setting for music performances. Over seven thousand students and adults visit the Rosen House each year for tours. The Rosen House and its objects serve as inspiration for students in Caramoor's arts-in-education programs, such as A Day in the Renaissance, Chinese Arts & Culture, and What's in a House? for their own writing, drawing, and music-making.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Caramoor followed its conflict of interest policy. A conflict of interest disclosure statement shall be furnished annually by each trustee and each covered employee disclosing any anticipated or possible conflict situations. Covered employees are senior employees and other employees who have a decision making role in hiring or contracting. Each new trustee shall be advised of the policy and furnished a disclosure statement upon undertaking the duties of such office. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a transaction requiring action by the Board of Trustees or committee of the Board, the interested person shall call it to the attention of the Board of Trustees or such committee and the trustee concerned shall not vote on the matter. Moreover, the person having a conflict shall retire from the room in which the Board or committee is meeting and may not participate in the final deliberation or decisions regarding the matter under consideration. However, that person may provide the Board committee with any and all relevant information before retiring. The minutes of the meeting of the Board or committee shall reflect that the conflict of interest was disclosed and that the interested person was not present during the final discussion or vote and did not vote. When there is a doubt as to whether a conflict of interest exists, the matter shall be resolved by the Board of Trustees excluding the person whose situation will be discussed. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a matter involving an employee, such employee shall notify the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer of Caramoor. The Board of Trustees may waive any disclosed conflict if it determines such waiver to be in the best interests of Caramoor.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Caramoor has a formal Compensation Committee which reviews annually salaries, bonuses, and benefits for all Caramoor employees. The Committee pays special attention to the positions of CEO, Managing Director, CDO, CFO, and CMO. Annual reviews include self-assessment by the employee, the employee's supervisor, and recommendations from the CEO. The CEO also receives a review from the Compensation Committee. <ExplanationTxt>Through their generous commitment of time, enthusiasm, and expertise, Caramoor benefits from the contributions of volunteers throughout the year. In 2014, over 200 people volunteered part-time at Caramoor in a variety of capacities. This number reflected the scope of Caramoor's presenting activities and educational programs, in addition to the availability of the volunteers themselves. The majority of volunteers act as ushers at Caramoor's year-round music presentations. They are often the public face of Caramoor, acting as greeters, helping audience members to their seats, and helping ensure the visiting public's safety and comfort. * 25-40 ushers work at each concert in the Venetian Theater * 16-20 ushers work at each concert in the Spanish Courtyard * 10 ushers work at each concert in the Music Room * 10 ushers work at each Dancing at Dusk concert on Friends' Field * 10 ushers work at each concert in the Sunken Garden Volunteers also play a major role in Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. They give tours of the collection, lead various elements of each program, and help children and teachers through the campus. They also provide guidance during public tours of the Rosen House as well as performing clerical duties and undertaking cataloging projects. Caramoor's Board of Trustees is responsible for the organization's governance, long-term strategy, and fiduciary oversight, while the senior staff is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Caramoor, including management and recommending annual budgets to the board. The board and staff work collaboratively in setting priorities for the organization's future. Caramoor's board members come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of professional expertise. By serving on various committees, including Finance, Building, Marketing, Development, and more, our board members act as fully engaged stewards of Caramoor's mission. Nearly 100% of the board participates personally by making major contributions to support annual operating costs as well as fundraising for Caramoor. Additionally, individual board members support the organization through the establishment of endowment funds and contributions toward capital projects.</ExplanationTxt>
