According to the UN, 95% of the people earn less than $2 a day and about 70% of Congolese lack access to adequate food. Children are the most vulnerable. Nine percent of children under age five are acutely malnourished, and 43 percent suffer from chronic malnutrition. In 2014, Congo Relief Mission Inc. (CRM) provided the following humanitarian and development assistance to people of Mbujimayi in the Democratic Republic of Congo:Provide funds to help support a 235-bed hospital and maternity/pediatric clinic. In 2014, Our Lady of Hope, treated over 17,000 people or about 47 people a day, at an average cost of $8.77 per person. The hospital collects $1 per person and the remaining cost comes from donations. The hospital operates as a charity hospital given the hardship it is for the sick to pay even $1.Provide funds to support teachers and students at two elementary schools and one secondary school. CRM built and supports two primary schools and a secondary school in Mbujimayi. St. Stephen Primary School and St. Stephen Secondary School in Mbujimayi educate about 1400 students. Buloba Primary School in the small village of Kamiji has about 700 students. CRM supported the 69 teachers at these schools. In 2014 the first graduating class of 69 students sat for the State Exam.Provide funds to help support 5 orphanages with around 150 children ranging in age from newborns to 18 years olds. The second annual Celebration for Congolese Orphans raised over $25,000 to help feed and care for over 150 orphan children. A nutritionist was hired to improve nutrition and school fees were paid for 100 primary school students, 46 secondary school children, and 3 university students. Each orphanage also received $2000 to invest in a self-sustaining project-which included: a corn mill, a small motorcycle, a refrigeration system, a chicken coop for over 100 chickens, and one orphanage had to use their money to find new housing, as the government forced them out of their location. One university student was able to buy a sewing machine. This initiative helps improve outcomes for these children and their communities.Provide funds to support an agricultural farm which planted and cultivated foodstuffs and livestock. Many children and poor benefitted from the food. The efforts of Congo Relief Mission (CRM) benefit people in extreme poverty living in Mbujimayi. Mbujimayi is located in the center-south region of Congo, in the Eastern Kasai region. The third largest city in Congo, Mbujimayi, has a population of more than three million people. It is a largely underdeveloped area with a total lack of basic infrastructure. Only a small percentage of the people have access to electricity and running water. Conflict, political uncertainty, and economic collapse have left many people without basic essentials, especially women and children.
