Holden's programs are integrated to foster its vision of "a Northeast Ohio in which trees, forests, and gardens provide maximum ecological and social benefits to the region's people and communities". Organization - During the past fiscal year, Holden continued to build on its 2009 strategic plan which identified three primary themes around which all of its programs would focus: (1) growing trees and communities, promoting the creation and care of interconnected networks of trees and wooded environments to sustain the ecological health of the communities where we live and work; (2) conserving native forests, fostering conservation of the diversity, health, function and ecological services of natural forested ecosystems in our region's human-impacted landscapes; and (3) engaging children with plants, instilling in children an appreciation for and knowledge of plants and their environments, so they will apply that value and understanding as adults. The strategic plan and one of its key outgrowths, the "Holden Storybook" (a compilation of themes in which Holden wishes to engage its diverse audiences), served as the basis for crafting Holden's "New Leaf" master plan for improved gardens, visitor amenities, and infrastructure in the arboretum's core 240 acres. Of the many projects included in New Leaf, several were selected for Phase One fundraising and implementation: (1) a new irrigation well and reservoir, to replace Holden's previous use of Corning Lake water, which had unacceptably high iron content; (2) a renovated Corning Library to become more attractive and functional; (3) a new 500-foot tree alle, running between the site of a future new visitor center and the new rhododendron garden; (4) a new 4.5-acre Rhododendron Discovery Garden; (5) a deer fence to enclose the core 240 acres; (6) a canopy walk to introduce students and visitors to the biology of the forest canopy, 60 feet above the ground; (7) a 120-foot tower that will emerge over the top of the forest canopy, enabling visitors to appreciate landscape diversity and to offer a view of Lake Erie; and (8) a renewed Corning Lake and Lotus Pond, including an exemplary connection between them, called the Streamside Meadow Garden. Fundraising for Phase One of New Leaf wrapped up at just under $9 million, well above the initial goal of $7.8M; just as significant, the campaign's success proceeded from the generosity of over 500 donors, reflecting the breadth of community support for Holden's evolution. The past year was highlighted by launching work on the deer fence, canopy walk, emergent tower, and restorations of Corning Lake and Lotus Pond. Completion of all these projects is targeted for autumn of 2015. In November 2014, the tower was complete enough for staff to climb, with safety harnesses, and confirm that we selected the correct height, from which guests will be able to see well over the treetops and appreciate Northeast Ohio's varied landscapes and watersheds, as well as providing forest-immersion experiences on the way up. As an organization, Holden embarked on a historically transformative journey by beginning its integration with the Cleveland Botanical Garden, beginning on September 8 with the signing of fundamental documents relating to new interorganization relationships and finances. By leveraging our respective strengths and resources, we will have an even greater impact in environmental education, applied botanical research and efforts to promote plants for the betterment of Northeast Ohio's communities and natural resources. This unprecedented combination creates the 13th largest public garden in North America. Holden President and CEO Clem Hamilton assumed that role for both organizations, Garden CEO Natalie Ronayne became Executive Vice President of both, some areas were integrated immediately - such as finance and advancement - and programmatic collaboration began to increase. To enable the integration, over $5 million was raised from the community, to support a wide range of integration costs, including deferred and due maintenance for the Garden's physical plant. In 2015 Holden and the Garden intend to devise a combined governance structure, to conduct strategic planning for the future of the combined organization, to institute joint membership, and to further integrate staff organization and systems, for maximum effectiveness and efficiency in service to their combined mission and to achieve long-term fiscal sustainability. The following account of our achievements is organized according to the three strategic themes, augmented by the general heading "Place and Purpose", under which we include how the public values Holden as a wonderful place to visit and an institution that improves their communities' general well-being. Growing Trees and Communities - Horticultural research and plant introduction In FY14, research staff published three papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Staff presented research at the American Phytopathological Society (APS) meeting in Minneapolis on Phytophthora root rot resistance in populations of Rhododendron. Several popular lectures to green industry professionals, garden clubs and Holden members were also presented by research staff. Presentations focused on plant breeding efforts and included conferences at the International Plant Propagators Society Southern Region meeting in Athens Georgia as well as presentations to local American Rhododendron Society (ARS) chapters in New York, New Jersey and Ontario, Canada. Open house tours of the Leach Plant Breeding facility were conducted for over 150 visitors during open houses over the course of the spring and summer and in addition 170 American Rhododendron Society members toured the facility. Steve Krebs, PhD, is serving as president of the Great Lakes Chapter of the ARS and organized the national meeting of ARS this year which was hosted by Holden and included tours of gardens at Holden and within the surrounding Cleveland metropolitan region. Research staff submitted one proposal to the National Science Foundation and another to the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust. Plant breeding work at the Leach station was also the focus of a local National Public radio feature story (http://www.wksu.org/news/story/39487). Research continues to focus on resistance to root rot disease in rhododendrons caused by the soil pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi as well as heat tolerance in native populations of rhododendrons and linkage between heat tolerance and disease resistance. Stephen Krebs continues to test rhododendron populations collected during a trip to the southeastern US for heat tolerance and root rot resistance. Field trials continue to screen heat tolerant R. hyperythrum hybrids through the John Thornton program in Louisiana for resistance to P. cinnamomi, as a means of determining whether resistance may have been a factor in selection under warm (zone 8) conditions. Holden completed shipment of R. hyperythrum F1 breeding selections to a Louisiana field trial site (total 160 selections, 4-6 plants of each) in the fall of 2012. This project is being done in collaboration with Plant Development Services Inc. in Mobile, AL. There has been some mortality of the planted selections, but many are showing evidence of disease resistance and therefore these plants have significant commercial potential in a new and large horticultural market. Evaluation will continue in FY15. Holden also entered into an informal 'breeder's agreement' with Briggs Nursery to evaluate some of the best rhododendron hybrid performers from our Baldwin evaluation site. These plants have performed well under very cold conditions and may be superior selections for growing under cold climate conditions. These plants would be for the traditional northern rhododendron market and are not part of the southern program. Holden continues to partner with the USDA on development of beech trees resistant to beech bark disease. Evaluation of plants is continuing in the lower Baldwin research plots and trees deemed to be potentially resistant will form the basis for development of a beech tree seed orchard. Holden research staff also coordinated a new project with USDA to evaluate ash trees for resistance to emerald ash borer at Holden. This project involves evaluation of survivor trees from the Detroit area and Holden received over $33,000 in federal monies to offset costs associated with the project. Holden will be constructing a new polyhouse to grow many of the plants to be used for resistance trials. Jennifer Koch of the USDA Forest Service is the lead on this project and a Holden collaborating scientist.
