The program is designed to encourage international training of diabetes researchers. The program provides training grants for U.S. post-doctoral fellows in diabetes research performing their work in Canada, as well as Canadian fellows carrying out their fellowship work in the U.S. Also, it encourages international scientific discourse. Research awards are administered through the Canadian Diabetes Association. Each grantee is required to submit a detailed annual progress report to CDA which includes a scientific and financial portion, 75 days after the end of each previously committed funding year. A cumulative final report is required within six months after the expiration date of the grant. If the progress report is not received by the due date, all subsequent award payments will be delayed until the obligations for the award are complete. American Diabetes Association Research Foundation closely monitors the use of grant funds. Each grantee is required to submit an Annual Progress Report, which includes a scientific and a financial portion, 30 days after the end of each previously committed funding year. Each year of funding after the first is contingent upon approval of the Annual Progress Report and the availability of funds. If the complete report is not received within 90 days after the due date, the award will be terminated. After the completion of the final year of the grant, a Cumulative Final Report, which includes a scientific and financial portion, is due within 60 days after the expiration date of the grant. If the complete final report is not received by the due date, the grantee will not be eligible to apply for any future awards until the obligations for the award are complete. Part II Core awards fall into three primary program types general research awards, career development awards, and training awards. Research awards are designed to support different types of research projects, career development awards are designed to assist young investigators and junior faculty advance in their careers as they establish independence from their mentors, and training awards offer support for post-doctoral fellows as they gain research training experience. Targeted awards are offered periodically as we secure sponsor support, and are usually designed to request research proposals in specific topics. These are usually one time offerings that are not offered again. Overall, the core awards will consider any research topic, but targeted awards are focused on specific fields of research. Pathway awards fall into three main categories Initiator, Accelerator, and Visionary. Form 990, Part III, Line 4 Changing Lives through Research The vast majority of diabetes cases, both type 1 and type 2, are polygenic diseases, meaning that more than one gene contributes to risk of and progression to diabetes. However, some very rare forms of diabetes are caused by single gene mutations and are called monogenic diabetes. Monogenic diabetes appears in newborns up to about six to nine months of age. As neonatal monogenic diabetes is rare, these individuals are often misdiagnosed as having type 1 diabetes and are treated with insulin. However, because the single gene mutations that cause the disease dont necessarily result in total insulina hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy. The beta cells of the pancreas make insulin. When the body cannot make enough insulin, it is taken by injection or through use of an insulin pump deficiencies like type 1 diabetes a condition characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by a total lack of insulin. Occurs when the bodys immune system attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas and destroys them. The pancreas then produces little or no insulin. Type 1 diabetes develops most often in young people but can appear in adults, oral diabetes medications like sulfonylureas can sometimes be used to better manage monogenic diabetes. The correct diagnosisthe determination of a disease from its signs and symptoms. of monogenic diabetes is critical and can make a significant impact in the lives of the patients. However, the study of rare diseases can be especially difficult, in part because of the challenge in identifying sufficient numbers of patients to study. With funding from the American Diabetes Association, Dr. Louis Philipson created the first registry for individuals with monogenic diabetes. Using web-based technologies, the University of Chicago Monogenic Diabetes Registry allows for the successful recruitment of a relatively large number of patients with monogenic diabetes who are providing great insight into our understanding of these sub-types of diabetes, and how best to treat them. Data can be efficiently collected and maintained in a secure and confidential manner. Now DNA from people diagnosed with diabetes in the first several months of life can be tested for known mutations. If a defined mutation is confirmed, these patients may be able to transition from insulin therapy to sulfonylureaa class of oral medicine for type 2 diabetes that lowers blood glucose by helping the pancreas make more insulin and by helping the body better use the insulin it makes Generic names acetohexamide, chlorpropamide, glimepiride, glipizide, glyburide, tolazamide, tolbutamide an oral medication, to effectively manage their diabetes. The more we learn about links between genetics and diabetes through biomedical research, the better able we are to develop and deploy the correct treatment regimen to treat individuals based on their specific genetic make-up. Because of the work of individuals like Dr. Philipson, we now know that individuals who have been diagnosed with diabetes as infants are more likely to have monogenic diabetes, and that they should be tested at a center that specializes in monogenic diabetes. The documentary Journey to a Miracle Freedom From Insulin, which was released in January 2015, tells the story of several parents who discovered their children had monogenic diabetes, a rare form of diabetes caused by genetic mutations. The diagnosis allowed the kids to swap insulin for oral medications, radically changing their lives. The film also tells the story of the science, highlighting the researchers and doctors who played an integral role in breakthrough studies on and treatment of monogenic diabetes. It documents the beginning of what many hope is a greater awareness of the rare disease. Best, one of four scientists credited with discovering insulin, provided the Association with the framework and early leadership for a formalized diabetes research program. Since our Research Programs inception in 1952, we have been the leader in funding cutting-edge diabetes research, supporting nearly 4,500 research projects and investing more than 700 million in diabetes research. Form 990, Part III, Line 4 Continued Peer Review Process One of the factors that sets American Diabetes Association-funded research apart and ensures that we are supporting the very best science is peer review. Peer review is a process whereby grant applications are reviewed and evaluated by individuals who are experts in the field or peers of the individual submitting the grant. Association grant applications all undergo peer review by three or more volunteer experts who are themselves diabetes researchers. Reviewers provide both a score and detailed comments regarding the strengths and weaknesses of each grant they review. Scores from all reviewers for each grant are averaged to arrive at a composite merit score that is then used to determine which grants to support. Types of Research Awards Research awards are divided into four major categories that reflect our research goals and priorities, provide extraordinary opportunities for researchers from diverse backgrounds, and foster the professional development of young scientists interested in diabetes research. The categories are Investigator-Initiated Awards Core Program Pathway to Stop Diabetes Collaborative Targeted Research and Research Co-Support. Approximately 80 of Association-funded research falls under the Core Research Awards. In 2014, to accelerate the research needed to discover solutions and ultimately cure diabetes, the American Diabetes Association launched a bold initiative, Pathway to Stop Diabetes, to inspire a new generation of diabetes researchers. With a goal of funding 100 new diabetes researchers over the next decade, Pathway provides crucial support to individuals focusing on innovative ideas and transformational approaches that will lead to new discoveries in diabetes prevention and treatment. Importantly, Pathway is in addition to ongoing Association research activities, and will significantly expand our research efforts. Pathway supports creative scientists who are early in their career, or who are established but would like to expand their focus on diabetes research regardless of their current field of study. Through awards of 1.625 million over the course of five to seven years, the program will allow researchers to have the time and focus needed to explore new ideas. Form 990, Part III, Line 4 Continued The first class of five Pathway Scientists began their awards in January 2014. Collectively the awardees published three high-impact publications, gave 10 presentations at scientific meetings, presented 24 invited lectures and filed one patent application, all resulting from Pathway funding in the first year. In addition, the inaugural Pathway to Stop Diabetes Symposium debuted at the 74th Scientific Sessions in San Francisco, bringing together the Mentor Advisory Group, program sponsors and Association leadership to witness firsthand the exciting projects and impressive progress of the first class of Pathway Scientists. The Association also held the second annual Pathway to Stop Diabetes grant competition. The Mentor Advisory Group reviewed 116 outstanding nominations and selected six new Pathway Awardees who were announced and started their grants in January 2015. 2014 Research Highlights The Association sponsored a new collaborative targeted funding opportunity Chronic Kidney Disease in the Setting of Diabetes with Boehringer Ingelheim, supporting research in this high-need area defined by an Association consensus conference. Association-supported researchers made significant progress in understanding how diabetes develops and progresses, and in identifying new ways to potentially combat the disease. Notable advances include studies uncovering surprising connections between the gut microbiome and metabolism, development and testing of new devices that integrate glycemic control with hypoglycemia prevention for artificial pancreas technologies, and studies uncovering the conditions and mechanisms from the maternal environment that confer risk for diabetes and obesity to the offspring. Scientific Sessions is the worlds largest scientific and medical meeting focused on the latest basic and clinical science research related to diabetes and its complications. The 73rd Annual Scientific Sessions, held in Chicago, June 21-25, 2013, brought together more than 17,600 scientists, health care professionals and industry representatives from 117 countries. The program included more than 700 speakers, delivering presentations in symposia, major lectures and oral abstract sessions, and 2,178 original research poster presentations. In addition, more than 155 companies showcased their latest products and services in the Exhibit Hall. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c Managing a Conflict of Interest To identify potential conflicts of interest with appropriate due diligence, the Foundations Officers, Directors, and members of the Grant Review Panel must annually disclose any potential conflicts of interest. The American Diabetes Associations Audit Committee and senior staff in legal affairs manage the disclosure and monitoring processes of the Board. The senior staff on the Associations Scientific and Medical Division manage the disclosure and monitoring processes of the Grant Review Panel. Through review of the annual disclosures and review of the agendas of relevant Board, Committee and other meetings, appropriate efforts are made in advance of the meetings to identify potential conflicts of interest. Each person also has the responsibility to report his/her own conflicts of interest actual or perceived as those conflicts may arise during a meeting.
