In addition to serving the Earth School community, we began to pick up students from four neighboring public schools. Fifty three boys from pre-K through sixth grade participated between one and three days a week. (The group included four recent Earth School alums who now participated as Apprentice Facilitators.) During the 20-week program cycle, boys participated in a total of 5,000 program hours. to continue in the program.) We also implemented the program at Grace Church School, an independent school in Manhattan, where 14 boys from Junior-K through 2nd grade participated. In the Fall of 2014, at the urging of the Earth School community, we expanded Boys' Arts Express to a full five days a week, with the option for boys to participate from one to five days. Fifty-one boys, who attend pre-K to 7th grade at six East Village schools, participated in 9,000 program hours. 35923 0 500 In addition, we offered Teaching Children to Thrive educator workshops to help participants acquire skills in using creativity-education techniques to engage children in expressing and examining critically their life experiences and self-perceptions. We conducted the workshops for the faculties of six schools participating in Creative Classrooms; at the annual conference of the International Boys' Schools Coalition, and at the College of New Rochelle 2014 Imagination, Inquiry & Innovation Institute. In total, over 250 educators participated. In June 2014, the Guild's Women's Group hosted a public discussion entitled "The Courage to Raise Good Men." Based on the groundbreaking 1994 book by, the conversation engaged a dynamic group of 20 women in a discussion of how gender roles have shifted in the past twenty years and how today's women can support the men in their lives in creating a personal definition of masculinity. In September 2014, the Guild hosted "Making Their Mark: Why We Should Encourage Boys to Create," speech by Adam J. Cox, Ph.D., a noted expert on child development. Drawing on his extensive research and clinical work, Dr. Cox addressed an audience of approximately 100 parents and educators about the motivation to create and how creating affects a boy's identity, confidence, curiosity, and happiness. 22923 0 41500 In September 2014, the Guild assumed operational control of Creative Classrooms a creativity and arts program that serves over 7,000 school children in New York City. The program has been operated by the Partnership for Inner-city Education since 1997. The Partnership's mission recently shifted from supporting numerous Catholic schools to full management of just six schools. As a result, the Partnership was no longer able to serve as the administrator of Creative Classrooms. The addition of Creative Classrooms to the Guild's program offering has allowed us to bring our innovative creativity-education approach to thousands of New York City children during the school day. The program, with an added focus on positive gender socialization and social-emotional development, has continued to serve children in 18 Catholic schools in some of the most economically disadvantaged areas of Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. The new focus has been widely embraced. Creative Classrooms has allowed the organization to bring into the school day its approach of using creativity education as a means of counteracting the negative effects of gender stereotypes and of building children's social and emotional skills. As one of the Creative Classrooms teachers put it, "We're not just teaching art anymore. We are helping shape human beings." 1005 0 1500 In the Spring of 2013, we conducted Children's Arts Express at Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem, in New York City. Through stories, expressive movement, visual arts and games, this program teaches children to look at how they view themselves, their gender, and the choices they make. We look at and address the ever-encroaching constriction of gender roles that begins to affect the youngest children. We speak and give creative expression to our feelings, our thoughts, and our preferences.
