Locally, 44 new, repaired or renovated homes were completed. Overseas, 53 homes were built through tithing 10% of unrestricted gifts to support safe, healthy, decent affordable housing. Volunteers, managed by staff, contributed 40,173 hours building new homes, renovating existing ones, making critical repairs for low-income families in King County, helping with administrative and Habitat Store activities and working on leadership teams. Additionally, 6 neighborhood clean-up/beautification projects engaged over 400 volunteers.Community engagement, the core of the Habitat model, secures neighborhood commitment and nurtures the civic engagement essential to a healthy community. Habitat incorporates volunteers on a scale unique in our sector. We recognize that bringing together a diverse cross-section of the community on a project of shared significance builds enduring social capital and helps each participant understand the systems change needed to alleviate poverty and increase awareness of the need for affordable housing.In 2014 Habitat SKC was recognized #1 out of 1,500 Habitat affiliates nationwide for contributing the largest fundraising tithe to Habitat International.HFHSKC made great strides in fiscal 2014, its first full year operating as a stronger, combined affiliate serving all of King County. Operating two Habitat Stores, in Bellevue and Seattle, provided a venue for manufacturers, contractors and individuals to donate surplus building materials and home furnishings for resale rather than discard them in landfills. 938 tons were diverted from landfills in FY2014 and made available to the public and other associated affordable housing providers. 3211786 Habitat for Humanity SKC homebuyers were prepared for successful long-term homeownership through a comprehensive education program that included 49 separate classes including budgeting, financial management, conflict resolution, home maintenance, disaster preparedness, green living, construction skills and others. They also invested up to 500 hours of sweat equity making them true partners in our work, instilling pride of ownership and confidence to meet the ongoing responsibilities of homeownership. Habitat qualifies for the charitable contribution deduction under section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) and has been classified as an organization that is not a private foundation under section 509(a)(1). Sales tax from the Habitat Store sales collected and remitted to the State of Washington and local entities was $133,729 for the period ended June 30, 2014. Habitat's income tax filings are subject to examination by various taxing authorities; open examination periods are 2010 and thereafter. Habitat believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken and, as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. During the current period, Habitat became aware that the CHDO may have lost its tax exempt status due to not filing a return or postcard with the IRS since inception.
