<Desc>GIRL SCOUTS OF EASTERN MISSOURI, INC.Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is the pre-eminent leadership development organization for girls and young women, serving more than 40,000 girls and 15,700 adult volunteers in the city of St. Louis and 28 counties in eastern Missouri. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is one of the largest Girl Scout Councils in the United States and ranks second in percentage of girls served. It ranks eighth out of 112 Councils in number of girl members. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is proud of its many accomplishments in 2014: 40,263 girls were registered in Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri25,738 girls were registered in troops and 14,525 in special-interest programs1 in 5 girls were served by Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri across the jurisdiction, much higher than the national market share for girl membership, which is 1 in 13 girlsMore than one million hours of community service were delivered by Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri annually A third party determined the annual value of this service is worth more than $22 million The value of the service is also reflected in the programs and participationGIRL SCOUTS OF EASTERN MISSOURIS THREE PROGRAMATIC FOCUS AREASIn 2014, the Council introduced three focus areas that will provide girls with the tools they need to succeed in the future and encourage girls and their families to choose Girl Scouts. These focus areas are STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), Money Management and Health. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouris programs align with these three focus areas and deliver innovative experiences for girls and adult volunteers. Each of the focus areas has its own Advisory Committee, made up of individuals from prominent St. Louis companies to ensure the Council hears the voices of the community and can effectively develop the pipeline for our future workforce.</Desc>

<Desc>STEMWhile women represent half of all college-educated workers in America, they make up just 28 percent of employees in the science and engineering fields, according to the National Science Board. At young ages, girls are less confident in their abilities in these subjects; by eighth grade, boys are twice as interested in STEM careers as girls are, as cited by the National Science Foundation. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that jobs in STEM fields will grow 17 percent by 2018, nearly double the growth for non-STEM fields, but that more than 1.2 million of those jobs will be unfulfilled, because of a lack of qualified workers to fill them. STEM workers are top earnersthe top 10 bachelor-degree majors with the highest median earners are all in the STEM fieldsso these disproportionately male industries translate to income inequalities. Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri offers many STEM-focused programs to combat this disparity.FIRST ROBOTICS:One of the most popular of these programs is FIRST Robotics, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST is a 501 (3) not-for-profit organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for STEM. The annual program culminates in an international robotics competition, a celebration where teams win recognition, gain self-confidence, develop people and life skills, make new friends and perhaps discover an unforeseen career path. FIRST teaches girls to have the courage to be judged by an adult panel, have the confidence to communicate how they built the robot and work as a team, as well as the character to be fiercely competitive yet gracious, regardless of victory and defeat. This innovative program introduces girls to educational hands-on activities and real-world applications to technology and sciences through fun activities. Eastern Missouri Girl Scouts participating in FIRST Robotics demonstrated the following outcomes:96 percent were better able to see and appreciate science at work in their lives89 percent were more likely to see themselves being successful in a science career91 percent indicated they intend to take science courses in high school on a post-program survey, compared to 71 percent of girls on a pre-program survey</Desc>

<Desc>MONEY MANAGEMENTGirl Scouts of Eastern Missouri recognizes the crucial need for financial education. Few things are possible without strong financial literacy and money management skills. Strong financial knowledge is an important goal on its own. It also facilitates positive attitudes and practices in other aspects of life, including mental and physical health, family stability and educational attainment. According to the PricewaterhouseCoopers, women hold only 19 percent of senior-level positions in the financial services market, only 14 percent of board seats and two percent of CEO roles. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority states that when comparing men and women who have high levels of financial literacy, many gender disparities are eliminated. Strong money management skills are deeply connected toward upward financial mobility, whether for an individual today or inter-generationally over time, and have a positive impact at the macro level on communities and economies locally, regionally and nationally.GIRL SCOUT COOKIE PROGRAM:The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led enterprise in the world, and more than 23,000 girls in eastern Missouri participated in 2014. The Cookie Program helps girls develop five essential skillsgoal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Girls also develop leadership skills by demonstrating courage, confidence and character; it takes courage to speak to someone they have never met, confidence to ask for the sale and character to follow through with the order. Knowing how to make, manage, spend, save and invest money is a skill that extends far beyond the cookie season. Many successful women leaders report that their first entrepreneurial experience came from selling Girl Scout Cookies. In 2014, Girl Scouts in eastern Missouri sold more than 2.7 million packages of cookies, with each package selling for $4. Proceeds from the Cookie Program stayed within the community to benefit local girls. Troops use their profits to fund everything from community service projects to overseas travel. Customers also had the option to purchase packages of cookies for those who otherwise might not be able to purchase them, such as food pantries, area fire stations and the local branch of the United Services Organization (USO) of Missouri, Inc. The 2014 Girl Scout Cookie Program succeeded in many ways: More than 44,000 packages of cookies were donated to the USO of Missouri, Inc.84 percent of girls set and achieved goals for their troops84 percent of girls reported they improved their money-handling skills, including how to make change</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: HEALTHGirl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is dedicated to giving its members a strong foundation of good health. One in three American children is overweight or obese, and 14.4 percent of Missouri adolescents are obese, according to the American Heart Association and Center for Disease Control. Health affects childrens immediate well-being and success, and it also has lifelong implications for educational, social and economic success, according to the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine. A direct correlation between physical activity and mental health means that fostering healthy practices in children will lead to adults who are healthy in all aspects, mentally, physically and emotionally.Girl Scouts who participated in health-focused programs reported the following benefits: 80 percent learned a new way to prepare a simple, healthy meal91 percent are interested in staying fitGIRL SCOUT CAMP: At Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, each girl has the opportunity to thrive in an environment where she learns new skills and experiences a growth in confidence, all while having fun and spending time making new friends. Girls who attend camp say they learn how to be their best, treat others with respect and learn valuable decision-making and team-building skills. Girls also learn new forms of physical activity, including canoeing, horseback riding, swimming, hiking and team games. According to the American Camp Association, community living away from home and in an outdoor recreation setting provides a foundation for tremendous growth. More than 10,400 girls participated in a Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri camping experience in 2014:1,089 girls attended Resident Camp1,504 girls attended Day Camp7,816 girls attended Troop Camp85 percent of girls learned to examine ideas from a variety of viewpoints and further use critical thinking to explore issues for their lives and leadership developmentPROJECT ANTI-VIOLENCE EDUCATION (PAVE):Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri reaches girls in difficult circumstances and helps them turn their lives around. Through programs like Project Anti-Violence Education (PAVE), girls are empowered to prevent violence in their lives. PAVE is designed to help girls and boys deal with problems associated with verbal, physical, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as bullying, cliques, gangs and threats. The discipline rates, defined as removing the student from the classroom for 10 or more consecutive days, have decreased in school districts where Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri provides PAVE, which it has offered over multiple years at no charge to participants. In 2014, more than 24,000 young people were served through PAVE13,420 girls and 11,140 boys. More than 300,000 students have participated in Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri PAVE programs since its inception in 2000. PAVE is offered in grades K-12, and helps students learn ways to gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. The Council also launched Transform UR Future (TUF) in 2014, a program that gives students the tools to stop bullying. TUF connects three schools within a districta high school, a middle school and an elementary schoolto work together to implement the PAVE program. High school-aged students, known as Transformers, lead PAVE sessions and act as peer mentors for the younger students. Girls in younger grades also focus on bullying behavior and relational aggression between girls. The program generates a constant flow of students throughout the district who understand conflict-resolution and are willing to help others learn as well. Students who participated in the PAVE and TUF programs gained important life skills:92 percent of kindergarteners said they are confident they can say the right thing when they have a fight with a friend95 percent of students learned to recognize and analyze different conflict situationsAPRIL SHOWERS:Every April, as part of the April Showers Program, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri collects monetary donations and personal care items, including toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant and other items that cannot be purchased with food stamps. These items are critical to the success and well-being of people who rely on food pantries and shelters to help them rebuild their lives. National standards have been established for five necessary expenses, including personal care products. The numbers below indicate the importance of the 2014 April Showers program:Almost 50 percent of students in Missouri public schools participated in a free/reduced-price lunch program More than 17,000 Girl Scouts and 12,000 adults collected personal care items and monetary donations during April Showers 1.1 million personal care items were collected and donated to area food pantries and sheltersMore than 99 percent of girls reported they felt empowered through April Showers</ExplanationTxt>
