As an open admission facility no animal is ever turned away from AHS's five facilities. AHS's goal is to place healthy companion animals in homes in the community. Prior to adoption, animals receive veterinary services, including spay/neuter and other medical treatments, as well as animal care, feeding and boarding. 23,858 companion animals came into AHS facilities in the year ended June 30, 2014;17,627 were placed in homes, reunited with owners or released to other organizations;10,240 animals received spay/neuter surgeries prior to adoption and an additional 10,600 animals were sterilized for other rescue groups by AHS and through AHS's partnership with Kindest Cut. Humane education programs focus on respect, social responsibility and compassion for animals. AHS fosters these concepts through school programs, youth clubs and youth summer camps, and community service projects. 12,289 people were served through AHS educational programs including 3,307 students through educational programs in the schools; 49 young people participated in the PetSet Youth Club and 810 in summer camps;6,084 people participated in AHS shelter tours and community programs.Foster volunteers cared for 1,913 animals prior to adoption.2,128 volunteers contributed 134,809 hours to AHS.AHS's Animal Admissions Center handled 27,816 phone calls.3,368,483 visits to AHS's website were made. 670496 1167244 Pet ServicesAHS's auxiliary services are designed to help pet owners with the challenges they may face with a pet's behavior or needing a place to board an animal when traveling. AHS's Behavior and Training Center provides more than 50 weekly pet training, socialization and play group opportunities for pets. 1,245 pets attended classes through AHS's Training Center.AHS operates a Behavioral Helpline, available seven days a week, to assist pet owners with particular challenges. A Lost and Found online bulletin board serves the community's missing pets.Animal House, AHS's pet boarding facility in Golden Valley served 3,600 pets.In addition, AHS provides euthanasia and cremation services and support services for the loss of a pet. 381293 RescueAiding animals in critical situations is core to AHS's work. AHS's humane agents respond to reports of possible animal cruelty or neglect throughout Minnesota. They receive reports about animals that are lacking proper food, water and shelter. They also participate in larger, more complex cases involving cruelty, with on-site investigations and seizures aiding law enforcement agencies that seek AHS assistance. For the year ended June 30, 2014, the Humane Investigations Department received 2,184 requests for assistance. From those calls, there was enough probable cause to open 540 cases. Follow-up investigation of these cases took AHS Agents into 62 counties across the state of Minnesota. Those investigations impacted the lives of 4,381 animals.AHS regularly worked with 95 animal welfare organizations throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and other states who need assistance when their facilities are overcrowded.
