To commemorate this milestone year, the Boston Ballet presented an ambitious season that began with a tour to London, five premieres, and an exciting free performance on Boston Common for 55,000 Bostonians. Bringing the season to a triumphant close, The Boston Ballet toured to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Company's first-ever tour to the Koch Theater in New York City's Lincoln Center. The programming for the Boston Ballet's 50th season was designed to celebrate the Company's distinguished past, extraordinary present and exciting future. The 50th Anniversary season's earned revenues and direct expenses were $1.1 million and $5.8 million respectively. The traditional performance season opened in October 2013 at the Boston Opera House and closed in June 2014 with 96 performances and had over 167,000 paying patrons in attendance. 5906335 0 6734533 Dance Instruction: The Boston Ballet School (the "School") provides a comprehensive dance education with the goal of inspiring, nurturing and sustaining a life-long love of dance in every student. The School's philosophy and curriculum support the development of the whole student within a nurturing educational environment. The School operates three state-of-the-art dance facilities: At Boston Ballet's headquarters in the South End of Boston; in the MetroWest town of Newton; and in the Salem/Marblehead area of the North Shore. During fiscal year 2014, the School provided dance education and training to 5,169 students through four programs. The Classical Ballet Program (889 students) follows a carefully designed curriculum with nine levels of study. It also has a supplemental Summer Dance Workshop (525 students) exposing students to different dance concepts and styles in a creative environment. The Children's Program (1,188 students) for ages 16 months to 7 years introduces children to the art of dance by promoting the exploration of creativity and expression through movement. The Adult Dance Program (2,488 students) offers a wide range of dance classes to students of all abilities and experience levels. The Pre-Professional Program (79 students) is an audition-only and highly competitive program that provides a rigorous training program preparing students for a professional career with the Boston Ballet, and in the ballet industry. The Boston Ballet's division for Education and Community Initiatives ("ECI") programs are designed to serve a range of community constituents and connect young people and their families with high quality arts experiences in neighborhood schools, community venues (Boston Opera House and Strand Theater) and Boston Ballet's world class facilities. Virginia Williams Fund ("The Fund"). The Fund assets of $2,115,000 are held in trust and managed by The Boston Foundation. The Fund was established in the early 1980's for the exclusive benefit of the Ballet in perpetuity on the condition the Ballet continues to operate as a 501(c)(3) Ballet Company. Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 The Ballet's Endowment consists of approximately ten individual funds established for a variety of purposes. The Ballet's portfolio is managed to provide for the long-term support of the Ballet. Accordingly, the funds are managed with disciplined longer-term investment objectives and strategies designed to meet future cash flow needs and spending requirements. Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 The Ballet accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The Ballet has identified its tax status as a tax-exempt entity as a tax position; however, the Ballet has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The Ballet is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Its federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination by any taxing jurisdiction for the past three years after the date of filing the related return.
