New York Citys completely confidential 24 hour suicide prevention hotline, which is often the first place people call when seeking emotional support if they are depressed, in distress, experiencing trauma or are concerned about a friend, loved one, client or colleague who may be suicidal. In 2014, the Samaritans hotline received 111,553 contacts, 82,902 of them calls from people in distress, those concerned about someone in crisis or those seeking the keys to effective suicide prevention. Over the year, the free hotline service was staffed by an average of 128 volunteers who donated over 25,000 hours in support of our programs and services, almost 250 hours of service per volunteer, equivalent to over one and a half months of full time work each, totaling over 750,000 dollars in free donated labor. 69045 NYCs suicide awareness and prevention education program has served the NYC Metropolitan area for over 25 years addressing the challenges, concerns, need for skills development, information and resources of health providers who respond to at-risk populations in community nonprofits, government agencies, public and private schools, businesses, etc. In 2014, Samaritans provided professional development workshops to 1,069 guidance counselors, social workers, psychologists, substance abuse counselors, crisis team members, parent liaisons, etc. and suicide awareness classes to 1,035 students from 509 NYC schools, 56 community-based and government agencies. The primary audience of the program was health providers who care for and treat at-risk youth, especially those attending the NYC public school system, which boasts 1.2 million students in 1,600 schools, but other high-risk populations were addressed working with other programs. 24402 Safe Place Support Groups for Surviviors of Suicide Loss. Samaritans survivor groups provide ongoing emotional support and a safe and confidential environment for those who have lost a loved one to suicide and are not only grieving the loss of someone close to them but must also deal with the stigma, stereotypes, myths and misconceptions many people have about suicide, while attempting to navigate their own mourning process.
