CCCD promotes education in a variety of ways. In 2014, CCCDs annual 2-day ""California Co-op Conference"" welcomed 104 participants, including members of different types of cooperatives, people who are in the process of starting a co-op, and those interested in learning more about the model. CCCDs professional staff presented at 10 conferences and events.CCCD's comprehensive website logged 30,437 unique visitors in 2014, and includes a start-up tutorial, downloadable publications, co-op news, videos, and links to additional resources. During 2014 CCCD published and distributed 900 of its annual print newsletters (also available on the website), shared 26 e-messages, and responded to more than 200 telephone and email inquiries. 115340 80000 Co-op Formation Assistance: CCCD provides cooperative development assistance, including the formation of consumer food cooperatives that increase local food security, promote locally sourced and community-based businesses; housing cooperatives that create home ownership opportunities, agricultural cooperatives that help farmers improve their market conditions and link more closely with consumers; and worker-owned business that promote living wage jobs and democratic workplaces. During 2014 CCCD provided direct support that led to the incorporation of 6 new cooperatives which created at least 12 new direct jobs, and saved 4 jobs. Undoubtedly, this assistance also led the indirect formation of additional jobs and local economic development. 103986 54319 Assistance to Existing Co-ops: Cooperatives are member owned and controlled businesses that are democratically governed on the basis of one member, one vote. Board and leadership education is particularly important for cooperatives because crucial business decisions are often being decided by people who may not have professional business experience. CCCDs education includes strategic planning, reading and understanding financial statements, linkages to technical consultants and managers, the roles and responsibilities of boards, effective communication, successfully representing members and avoiding conflict of interest. Workshops for existing cooperatives were offered at the California Co-op Conference discussed earlier. The annual training for directors of agricultural cooperatives included 54 participants in 2014.
