<Desc>STUDENT PROGRAMS: HEART'S HUMANE LIVING PROGRAM IS A FLEXIBLE HUMANE EDUCATION CURRICULUM THAT COVERS A WIDE RANGE OF HUMAN RIGHTS, ANIMAL PROTECTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION ISSUES. WE OFFER THE HUMANE LIVING PROGRAM TO STUDENTS IN K-12 IN FOUR AGE-APPROPRIATE VERSIONS: K-2ND GRADE; 3RD-5TH GRADE; MIDDLE SCHOOL; AND HIGH SCHOOL. HEART'S SPECIALLY TRAINED EDUCATORS TEACH THESE LESSONS IN A FORMAT THAT IS ADAPTED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS AND STUDENT POPULATIONS. IN 2014, HEART REACHED MORE THAN 6,000 STUDENTS IN THE NEW YORK CITY, CHICAGO, INDIANAPOLIS AND PORTLAND OREGON AREAS. WE OFFERED MULTI-LESSON IN-CLASS PROGRAMS AT OVER 60 PUBLIC SCHOOLS. WE ALSO FACILITATED SEVERAL EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROJECTS, WHERE STUDENTS PUT THEIR VALUES INTO ACTION THROUGH OUR SERVICE LEARNING CURRICULUM CONDUCTED IN BOTH SCHOOL-BASED AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS. IN ADDITION, WE CONDUCTED OUR OWN CUSTOMIZED SUMMER CAMPS: A 3-WEEK "HAVE A HEART" CAMP, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HUNTS POINT ALLIANCE FOR CHILDREN, IN THE BRONX; A 3-WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM WITH THE ACADEMY FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP IN CHICAGO, AND A 2-WEEK "CLIMATE CHANGE CAMP" IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PEACE LEARNING CENTER IN INDIANAPOLIS.</Desc>

<Desc>TEACHER TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:OVER THE PAST YEAR, HEART REACHED COUNTLESS TEACHERS AND FUTURE EDUCATORS THROUGH NUMEROUS WORKSHOPS. ONE OF OUR MAJOR TEACHER TRAINING PROJECTS WAS A CREDIT-BEARING 36-HOUR HUMANE EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE WE CONDUCTED FOR SCHOOLTEACHERS THROUGH THE NYC DOE THAT QUALIFIED THEM TOWARD A SALARY DIFFERENTIAL. THIS COURSE HAD THE RIGOR OF A GRADUATE LEVEL COURSE AND WAS VERY WELL RECEIVED. ANOTHER MAJOR INITIATIVE WAS A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NASSAU COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE WHERE WE TRAINED SENIOR ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEYS TO OFFER HUMANE EDUCATION ASSEMBLIES AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN NASSAU COUNTY, MAKING HUMANE EDUCATION ONE OF THEIR NEW COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. WE ALSO TRAINED VOLUNTEER TEACHERS, ATTORNEYS, LAW STUDENTS, ANIMAL ACTIVISTS AND CONCERNED CITIZENS TO CONDUCT HUMANE EDUCATION LESSONS AT SCHOOLS AND IN OUT-OF-SCHOOL VENUES LIKE LIBRARIES AND COMMUNITY CENTERS.</Desc>

<Desc>RESOURCE AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT:HEART WORKED ON DEVELOPING NUMEROUS RESOURCES IN THE PAST YEAR. WE COMPLETED, PRINTED AND BEGAN DISTRIBUTION OF AN EXTENSIVE 160 PAGE RESOURCE GUIDE OF 40 LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES FOR BOTH SEASONED AND LESS EXPERIENCED EDUCATORS TO IMPLEMENT IN K-12 PROGRAMS IN SCHOOLS AND NON-TRADITIONAL VENUES. WE ALSO PROVIDED SPECIALIZED CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR SCHOOLS AND NON-PROFIT AGENCIES TO EXPAND THE HUMANE LIVING PROGRAM TO MEET SPECIFIC NEEDS. FOR EXAMPLE, WE WORKED WITJH RESCUE PAW FOUNDATION TO PREPARE A HUMANE EDUCATION CURRICULUM THAT IS BEING OFFERED IN ALABAMA AND WE WORKED WITH ANIMAL HAVEN SHELTER TO EXPAND AN EARLY CHILDHOOD SERVICE-ORIENTED WORKSHOP SERIES. WE ALSO DEVELOPED A SECOND 10-LESSON UPPER ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM, AS WELL AS ASSEMBLY, LIBRARY AND CAMP PROGRAMMING. FINALLY, WE CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR OWN SERIES OF VIDEOS ON ANIMALS TO COMPLEMENT OUR CLASSROOM LESSONS, AND DEVELOPED ADDITIONAL VIDEO TUTORIALS SHOWING EDUCATORS HOW TO CONDUCT MEANINGFUL PROJECT-BASED HUMANE EDUCATION ACTIVITIES WITH YOUTH.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>HEART'S HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAMS SEEK TO INSTILL COMPASSION AND RESPECT FOR OTHER PEOPLE, ANIMALS AND THE ENVIRONMENT AND PROVIDE STUDENTS THE TOOLS TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES. HEART HAS SPECIALLY DESIGNED AGE-APPROPRIATE INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS TAUGHT BY THEIR OWN STAFF OF HUMANE EDUCATION INSTRUCTORS. HUMANE EDUCATION IS REQUIRED BY STATE MANDATE TO BE TAUGHT IN ALL PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN NEW YORK WITH A LOSS OF PUBLIC FUNDING IF THE LAW IS NOT ADHERED TO. IN REALITY, FEW TEACHERS OR ADMINISTRATORS ARE EVEN AWARE OF THE LAW AND HEART IS ONE OF THE FEW ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING CRITICAL HUMANE EDUCATION SERVICES. IN 2014 THERE WAS A CONTINUED FOCUS ON INCORPORATING SERVICE LEARNING INTO ALL ASPECTS OF THE ORGANIZATION'S PROGRAMMING, INCLUDING BOTH THE IN-CLASS PROGRAM AND THE AFTER-SCHOOL AND OUT OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION, HEART CONTINUED TO EXPAND AND BROADEN THE PROGRAM TO TRAIN TEACHERS AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS TO TEACH HEART LESSONS IN THEIR OWN SCHOOLS AND OTHER VENUES. HEART ALSO RAN THE HAVE A HEART SUMMER CAMP FOR THE FOURTH YEAR IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HUNTS POINT ALLIANCE FOR CHILDREN IN THE SOUTH BRONX AS WELL AS IN CHICAGO, INDIANAPOLIS, AND PORTLAND OREGON. WE ALSO CONTINUED OUR ONGOING PARTNERSHIP WITH ANIMAL HAVEN WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE CARING KIDS ANIMAL AMBASSADORS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM. IN 2014 WE CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR TEACHER TRAINING EFFORTS. WE AGAIN CO-SPONSORED A 36 HOUR CREDIT-BEARING HUMANE EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE FOR SCHOOLTEACHERS THROUGH THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AS WELL AS CONTINUED OUR PUBLIC SERVICE PROJECT WITH THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION BY TRAINING VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS AND LAW SCHOOL STUDENTS TO TEACH OUR LESSONS IN LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. WE TEAMED UP WITH THE RESCUE PAWS FOUNDATION TO CREATE A CUSTOMIZED CURRICULUM FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN LAWRENCE COUNTY, ALABAMA - ONE OF THE POOREST COUNTIES IN THE STATE. WE ALSO CONDUCTED A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP FOR NYC TEACHERS AT THE CHANCELLOR'S DAY CONFERENCE DEMONSTRATING HOW HUMANE EDUCATION CAN BE INCORPORATED INTO THEIR CURRICULUM. HEART CONTINUED TO EXPAND ITS NATIONAL REACH NOT ONLY THROUGH OUR OFFICES IN CHICAGO, INDIANAPOLIS AND PORTLAND OREGON BUT THROUGH OUR NATIONAL TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM AS WELL AS THE DISTRIBUTION OF OUR RESOURCE MATERIALS INCLUDING THE RECENTLY PUBLISHED HUMANE EDUCATION RESOURCE GUIDE PUBLISHED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ASPCA AND THE INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR ANIMAL WELFARE. THIS GUIDE IS NOW AVAILABLE ON OUR WEB SITE AS A FREE DOWNLOAD. HEART'S IS WORKING TO FORM A NATIONAL DISTRIBUTION NETWORK THAT CAN LEVERAGE OUR EXTENSIVE CURRICULUM THAT NOW INCLUDES OVER 160 LESSONS AS WELL AS THE EXPERTISE OF OUR STAFF THAT NOW INCLUDES FOUR CITY OFFICES.</ExplanationTxt>
